Bert and Ernie - not gay (Sesame Street says, Marriage??? No Way!!)
Seattle PI ^ | Aug 11, 2011 | CHRIS GRYGIEL

They've lived together for 42 years and share a bedroom, but the people who produce "Sesame Street" made it clear on Thursday: Bert and Ernie are not gay.

Nor are they heterosexual. They just are.

"Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves.

"Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics, they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation," Sesame Workshop said in a statement posted on Facebook.

Many threads in the past few days about the push by the homosexual community to not only declare Bert and Ernie as "gay", but to have them get "married" on the show, to make the homosexuals in the audience feel better about themselves.

I am very glad to see that even Sesame Street knows when to draw the line.

This might be one for your ping lists. You pinged earlier in the story, before Sesame Street made their statement, but if you haven't pinged since then... Sesame Street's answer puts a definitive end to the unfortunate and very wrong-minded petition.

And hands the homosexual activists a clear rejection that, IMO, should be applauded by everyone on this forum.

Probably true. But you know, I don't care if the reason they said "No Way!" was morality-based, or financially-based -- it was the right answer, and it's about time somebody gave it.

I am so tired of the Political Correctness that allows this or that pressure group to get away with trashing our culture -- and our Nation -- simply because no one has the backbone to stand up and say, "Enough! Stop it!" for fear of being labeled a {whatever]-phobe.

There are times when the Right Answer is good enough, even if it wasn't given for the ideal reason.

They're puppets. Their characters exist in a fantasy world. It's all make-believe.

If you think about it, that's enough right there to warrant the comparison with a three-dollar bill. :)

I am happy to report that according to Sesame Street, the answers to your two questions are:

1: "Yes" and 2: "No".

At least for the time being, that is. I don't expect this defeat will actually make them stop demanding, of course. But it is a significant victory in the context of a larger cultural war.

Generally speaking, any fool can open a Facebook page suggesting some outrageous thing. But not many can expect to get so many laughs at watching people go absolutely hysterical because of it. He was a pretty good puppeteer too, wasn’t he.

>>> Earlier threads about the “let them marry” petition:

Then this really adds nothing to the discussion does it? The Sesame Street position is unchanged since at least the early 90s. They always have been unequivocal that Bert and Ernie are puppets, period. The gay joke isn’t their doing or their position.

>>> Can we please keep sodomy out of children’s programing at least?

You ask that about puppets operated by a man sticking his arm up the puppet’s backside?

I thought about that aspect before I posted this thread.

The two earlier threads which mentioned the Sesame Street position were still focused on the controversy surrounding the petition -- the articles were playing with the "gay puppet sex/marriage" aspect of the story.

This article was the first I saw that clearly said, "Sesame Street said 'NO'. What part of 'NO' do you not understand?"

So I thought that was probably worthy of a thread, because it declared a definitive end to this nonsense.

Miss Piggy is in LOVE with Kermit the Frog.

There is no suggestion on Sesame Street that Pigs and Frogs could have sex.

LOVE is not the same as SEX.

Or so I'm told, anyway...

"What song the Syrens sang, or what name Achilles assumed when he hid himself among women, though puzling Questions are not beyond all conjecture." - Thomas Browne

I see from a footnote that the emperor Tiberius demanded answers to such questions from the "Grammarians".

... and here it is in Suetonius:

Yet his special aim was a knowledge of mythology, which he carried to a silly and laughable extreme; for he used to test even the grammarians, a class of men in whom, as I have said, he was especially interested, by questions something like this: "Who was Hecuba's mother?" "What was the name of Achilles among the maidens?" "What were the Sirens in the habit of singing?"

The messed up part about this was the fact that I thought Bert and Ernie were orginally brothers, which would be really sick implications to later say that they were homos living together, I am sorry, but my incest meter applies to homosexuality, too, and yes, I am pretty incestophobic, if such a term exists. Also, I would say that people, myself included weren’t in homosexual relationships with our own roommates, while living single, especially in our academic lives. That’s reality, and that’s also how some things should be realistically portrayed.

Marriage also depends on one’s measure of reality too. I mean, years ago a man and his wife, both dog owners, married their dogs to each other. The big point is, I could care less whether or not some people think of certain things as married, but don’t come around asking me to believe your interpretation of reality.

Is it too much to ask that we also portray things that children should realistically expect to deal with, such as the fact that two guys or two women living together aren’t automatically homosexual relationships, and that there’s plenty of nonsexual aspects worth enjoying about life in general. I mean, seriously, if both myself and my wife enjoy dirt biking, hiking, and other cool things, that’s a real plus to married life, isn’t it?

> ...and yes, I am pretty incestophobic...

Incest is taboo almost universally among humans, and for very good biological/genetic reasons, aside from the moral ones. I think your "phobia" is well-grounded in reality.

Bert and Ernie are different (tall/short, dark/light, etc.) but are best friends. They're a great model for the idea that people who are different can get along. Having them both be male allowed them to be best buds without the assumed hint of romance if one of them had been female -- it's rarer in real human relations for a male and female to just be best buds.

The idea that Bert and Ernie must be homosexual just because they share a room and are best friends is offensive to the vast majority of people who have had same-sex roommates. There could be no greater, clearer demonstration that the homosexual activists will stop at nothing, than this unfortunate petition.

It’s impossible that Bert and Ernie are lovers, for the simple fact that Bert obviously never gets any, while Ernie seems to get it regularly, or so his snicker-laughter would seem to indicate.

Very Well said, dayglored.

Your statement IS, in fact, the opinion of the majority. We realize that homosexuals deny this fact, but it is a fact, nevertheless. This spectacle that they have, for years, emboldened themselves to perform for society, has become just another sad reality of why the human condition is an absolute failure.
