SALINAS, Calif. - A teenager was shot dead Wednesday and neighbors say it was a case of self defense. The victim was identified as 19 year old Miguel Medina, Jr.
The Monterey County Sheriff's Office believes Medina broke into a home at 286 Pingree Way just after 12:30 p.m.
When deputies arrived on scene, they found Medina on the floor of the open garage with an automatic weapon slung around his shoulders. He had been shot and killed. Medina was identified through fingerprints.
During the initial break in, Monterey County Sheriff Investigators believe Medina got into an argument with someone at the home and gunshots were exchanged.
Darrel Hathaway, a neighbor, told Central Coast News the house has been vandalized before.
Hathaway also told Central Coast News the incident was caught on the families home security camera. Hathaway said, "They were in the living room talking and his son saw someone walk into the garage with a gun in his hand. So his son got up and got a gun himself and walked out to see what was going on."
Sheriff Investigator Terry Kaiser told Central Coast News it's possible the homeowner's son may not be charged with any crime if the shooting was in self defense.
"If you in any way feel threatened, you have the right to defend yourself, your property and your homestead," said Kaiser.
Central Coast News spoke to Charles Halliday, a neighbor, who said, "Finally the owners got to strike back. I can safely tell Salinas and the surrounding area, strike one for the good guys!"
"Maybe the others will take this as a hint that we're not going to put up with it anymore, we're going to protect our homes at any cost," said Holiday.
Anyone with information involving this case is asked to contact Investigator Saheen Jorgensen or Investigative Sergeant Terry Kaiser at 831-755-3772.

This same thing happened to a friend of mine in San Bernadino early one morning. She and her son were eating breakfast and this guy started kicking on the front door. When they didn’t open it and he couldn’t kick it in, he went around to their garage and came inside. Her son went into the garage to confront him, without a gun, for pete’s sakes, and got his head blown in. They had never seen this guy in their lives.
They found the guy hiding in the attic of a house of someone down the street who didn’t even know him. The shooter was a gang member and said it was random initiation procedure. He had to take somebody out. He copped a plea and got 25 years for manslaughter.
Arm up folks, and blow these suckers away.
Tactical slings allow the weapon to be slung and held easily at the same time. However, whenever I see “automatic weapons” in an article I immediately doubt it-maybe this will prove the exception
They just drop in the fact that the perp had an AUTOMATIC WEAPON like its something that doesn’t need to be explained.
There should be no question. A thug walks into your garage with an automatic weapon, your life is definitely in danger. The criminal is begging on his knees to be killed.
The mother who raised up this scum doesn't deserve the right to cry about her “pobrecito nino”.
Prayers for your friend, Rowdy. That is a horrifying story... absolutely terrible. To watch your own son murdered in front of your own eyes... no words.
It’s that type of neighborhood.
If more citizens stand up for themselves then maybe Salinas will become a safe place to visit much less live in.
If so, I'd want my money back -can't even get the names straight and they confuse the victim with the perp
I think there was more than one intruder.
“...were growing marijuana in the house and the suspect*s* may have been after the weed.”
“...with an automatic weapon slung around his shoulders.”
“...and his son saw someone walk into the garage with a gun in his hand.”
The media needs to clarify exactly which type of “automatic weapon” was used. Must’ve been one of those armor-piercing, cop-killing,bayonet-lugged, barrel-shrouded machine guns that puts congressdweeb Carolyn Mc Carthy’s panties in a twist.
“The victim was identified as 19 year old Miguel Medina, Jr. “
Victim?!? If he was such a victim, what was he doing on someone else’s property with a firearm in hand? This is like calling someone a “suicide victim”.
