SEATTLE — The financially strapped U.S. Postal Service is proposing to cut its workforce by 20 percent and to withdraw from the federal health and retirement plans because it believes it could provide benefits at a lower cost.

The layoffs would be achieved in part by breaking labor agreements, a proposal that drew swift fire from postal unions. The plan would require congressional approval but, if successful, could be precedent-setting, with possible ripple effects throughout government. It would also deliver a major blow to the nation’s labor movement.

In many communities this will probably result in loss of Saturday delivery, no windows open Saturday at the post office, and ridiculously short hours Monday-Friday.

I think they should go to Saturday-only delivery. There’s nothing that comes in my mail that is so time sensitive that it couldn’t wait until the end of the week. I’ll bet there are plenty of people who’d like part-time Saturday work.

ALL Federal Employees, past and present, should be in the Social Security and Medicare system ... THEN it will be solvent and work as it was designed. It’s a TRUST FUND, not a welfare entitlement.

THIS IS A GREAT REASON for Operation Wetback Two ... opening up jobs for US CITIZENS ...

Just sayin’

I was amazed when I consulted historical documents and found out there actually WAS an Operation Wetback. LOL

It would be akin to saying "We are proposing the National N**ger Deportation Act".

1911: Ronald Reagan born. Letter rate: 2 cents. Post card: 1 cent. In some cities deliveries were made 2 or 3 times a day.

I initially had the same views as many here... laughed that a federal agency is showing the ineptness of the federal government's ability to run programs like health care well.

Then when I read one of the posts that named all the Post Office leadership appointed by Obama, I figured this was all set up from the very beginning to get his cronies set up to get their kickbacks and get rich off of THEIR privatization.

Knowing those folk were all appointed by Obama, I would bet a dime to a dollar (if I were a better, lol) that if someone followed any new Post Office health care or retirement programs, they would find loads of money being made by Obama's cronies.

That's certainly not our reality, nor that of our business.

I have not been to a post office in many years.
I get nothing by US POST any more but junk mail, everything is online. Even Jury Duty registration is online.

Why do we need the post office anymore?

One day a week, or twice a month delivery would be fine with me.

First and foremost, I hope they start laying off postal workers in the upper management level. The postal delivery persons and the counter persons are the most valuable employees in the USPS. Someone should do a chart on the number of workers versus the upper tier management numbers. I think the public would be shocked at the free loaders in the systme.

Not only Eisenhower, but also Herbert Hoover and Harry Truman supported the removal of illegals to open up jobs for Americans.

OTH today the political elite continue to import 125,000 legal new workers each month, tolerate the presence of ~40 million illegals, and spend hundred of billions on anchor babies, illegals, new immigrants, and their extended families.
