Ratings are king. He is employed by a network that went far left, and his ratings stunk. Rabid lefties didn't want to hear from a centrist type Democrat, and conservatives had long ago stopped watching MSNBC. He didn't really have much choice other than to take his show to the far left.
It's kinda sad. As you said, he was always a Democrat, but I always got the feeling he loved politics first and foremost and wasn't a fringe nut. To remain on that network with bookends like Al Sharpton and Lawrence O'Donnell, he pretty much has to be as wacky as them.
He went completely nuts after Bush was re-elected.
