INDIANAPOLIS - A stage has collapsed at a concert at the Indiana State Fair.

The stage was set up for the Sugarland concert at the state fairgrounds. Rigging for the stage lighting reportedly fell around 8:50 p.m., before the main act took the stage.

Police and fire crews believe they have everyone moved from the grandstand. A triage unit has been set up near the Hoosier Lottery exhibit at the fair. Other victims are also being transported to at least two area hospitals.

Several ambulances can be seen entering and leaving the area.

Fair and emergency officials are planning a news conference for shortly after 10 p.m.

Dave Lindquist, music journalist for The Indianapolis Star, reported on Twitter, "Tragedy at fair concert. Entire stage collapses on track." He also wrote that "perhaps a dozen injured people have been removed from track on stretcher-type boards."

Eyewitness News' Chuck Lofton reported from the scene that evacuation efforts were in place before the stage collapsed. High winds may have played a role in the collapse...

Just heard on TV that band might have been on stage to tell the crowd the concert was cancelled.

The band was Sugarland. They just tweeted that they were all safe and sent out a message of concern for the injured.

That’s awful. Not much luck at State Fairs this summer, except for Michelle in Iowa.

Prayers up for the injured, and the families of the deceased.

Sugarland was VERY lucky.

Indiana is tornado country. Some of the worst have happened there. This sounds like something less than that ~ a downburst perhaps.

Growing up there I learned all about these things FIRST HAND!

60 to 70 MPH winds. For comparison:
Category One Hurricane (Sustained winds 74-95 mph, 64-82 kt, or 119-153 km/hr).

This also happened a few weeks ago in Ottawa as Cheap Trick was on stage. Fortunately nobody was killed.

Ditto Ohio. A good friend was watching his son’s football game in the top row of the high school stadium. A wind gust took ripped the big banner loose and it flipped him 5 rows down head first into the bleachers and broke his neck.

Repost from the other thread Hey! This is awful Same thing happened to Cheap Trick in Ottawa, nobody killed though.

I guess you have to be careful with temporary stage structures.

Terrible for the folks on stage, awful for the crowd, who can see it happening yet can’t do anything.

That is not true. I was at that concert, and just feet from the collapsed rigging. Maybe two minutes before the collapse, an announcer from a local radio station came on stage. He gave instruction on what to do “if” it began to storm during the concert. It was mentioned as a contingency of rain, not a warning to leave and take cover. Many news stories are getting this part of the story wrong.

There was a nasty line of storms that went through east central Illinois a few hours earlier and headed towards Indianapolis. Some cells had high winds and tennis ball size hail.
