Clayton County Food Stamp Snafu Angers Many
MyFoxAtlanta ^ | 8/10/11 | Justin Gray

Posted on 08/13/2011 8:19:11 PM PDT by Kartographer

Anger and frustration from dozens of Clayton County parents who say their children are going hungry after their food stamps were suddenly cut off.

State officials admit that something went wrong down in Clayton County at the office that administers food stamps and Medicaid but they're still not sure what.

Parents say they can't buy food without those food stamps.

It's hard for me to buy food for my kids when the gubmint keeps taking it and giving it to these people. The wrong people are rioting in the U.K. and U.S.

Maybe if they can’t feed their kids with out the rest of us paying for the food; #1 They shouldn’t have any more kids. #2 Perhaps they should put them up for adoption.

I’ve seen enough of the lifestyle of people who cry that they can’t feed their children. Entertainment centers with flatscreen tv and full cable, blackberries and iphones and shiny cars and everything else. I even had a family member, years ago, crying about “can’t feed the baby.” Lived in a gated community with tennis court, fridge full of beer, electronic gadgets all over the house but can’t feed the baby. Yeah, don’t get me started with these people.

Parents say they can't buy food without those food stamps.

There was a time in the early 70s when I didn't have a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of. My two kids didn't go hungry. Freeloaders whine about the nanny state. PARENTS find a way to keep their children fed. What are these freeloaders going to do when the depression finally hits?

I was at the chiro last week and there was a new patient filling out forms. If she didn't have meth face then that was the worst case of acne I've ever seen. She had the teeth and figure to match. Her kids were with her and they were dressed better than mine; however, my son is a fraction of their ages and behaved better. She forgot her Medicaid card and had to call her boyfriend to get the number on it. She pulled out an iPhone. My chiros are both very conservative and accept Medicaid, but there were many of us giving her uncomfortable looks. Both docs noticed and I'm hoping that they make things uncomfortable for her.

Maybe they should quit buying pop, candy, birthday cakes, expensive steaks, potato chips by the load, and get lunch meat, chicken etc.

The entitled are getting on my last nerve. I had a woman hand me her card saying she was sorry it was broken in half because it is 7 years old. She had 3 children and another on the way. I’m tired of it.

At the time of the Revolutionary War, American Colonists were paying barely one week's wages per year in taxes.

Now, between federal, state, and local taxes and mandatory programs, the average American pays nearly four months wages per year.

I agree completely. Most often when I look at what people are buying with their food stamps, they are purchasing things like snack foods, sodas and "juice drinks," sugary cereals, and convenience foods.

They would be much better served by purchasing staples: rice, potatoes, beans, less expensive cuts of meat, flour, corn meal, oatmeal, fruits and vegetables, and so forth.

Of course, that would entail actually cooking food on occasion.

It would not hurt for food stamp recipients to have to learn to get the most food for amount of money provided, and to learn how to properly prepare the food.

I agree with you too.

It has gotten so out of hand that it is going to take a major overhaul to change it. Illegals use stamps regularly for the food and buy all the other stuff with the 50s and 100s they pull out of their wallets.

I’m so tired of the whole thing.

Perhaps they should have, oh I don’t know...stocked up a little.

Or perhaps they could have:

  1. gotten a job
  2. not had children they couldn't afford
  3. spent their money on food instead of beer, cigarettes, recreational drugs, and lotto tickets
  4. disconnect their cable TV and spend that money on food
  5. Gotten an job (oh I said that before)
Or they could come to my house and attempt to steal from me directly instead of using the government to do their stealing for them (and get shot thus ending their drain on society)

Okay, I’m not saying these are the people. But I do know some (very few) people who are employed and, for whatever reason, qualify for this help. They didn’t plan it and it shames them to take it...and they get the very most bang for their buck.

I know the other things are right. I just didn’t want to lump everyone in together with the .10% that are genuine.

I will grant you that the 0.10% you stated is low, and that there are people who truly need assistance. I understand your perspective and don't disagree with it. (I believe private charities can help the destitute better than the gov't, but that is a different topic on a different thread.)

People living on the "edge" either barely eeking out a living or requiring assistance don't initially have the capacity to think more than a few days or weeks down the line. Many have to learn the lesson the hard way.

Certainly families that dependent on this aid ought to get it in a timely manner, just like people who toil for their pay need to get paid on time. But they also should be prioritizing their expenditure. It is unacceptable for people who depend on the government for food and healthcare to have cable TV or expensive phones and cars.

Years ago we used to live in the DC area and I remember our visits to a discount grocery store. We used to shop frugally; and guess what, we’d see people in the checkout line with carts full of expensive prepared food, steaks etc. I’d marvel at how they could afford that, and then they’d pull out the food stamps which used to be like paper checks those days. I just couldn’t believe how our government could be so out of touch with the reality that some people are here to scam us taxpayers.

With the way the economy is nowadays, I think it's time that large cities go back to providing soup kitchens.

That way the people who are going hungry get food, the government saves money, and we all see who is feeding at the State teet!

California renamed its Food Stamp Program. Now it's called CalFresh.

The State is $20 Billion in the hole and they advertise for new recipients all the time.

I hear their ads on the Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Mark Levin shows. I guess they don't understand the audience they are reaching. Of course they use Children in the ads and go on and on about eating healthy. What a joke.

10% that are genuine.

What's genuine mean in this context? Does this mean that they'd have to cut back on some of their non-essential spending? Does this mean that they're upside down on their car note? Or does it mean that they'll absolutley starve to death if they stop receiving stolen goods welfare from the government. I'm pretty sure that it isn't the last possiility.

A few questions if you don't mind. Since you know these people, how many hours a week in total does their family work? Do they have dogs or cats? How old are their car(s). Do they ever eat out? I;m trying to establish a baseline to define EBT card qualification
