EUREKA, Ill. -- Sarah Palin told NBC News that Rep. Michele Bachmann winning the straw poll will not affect her decision to run or not, calling her win "not much of a surprise."
"It is not much of a surprise," Palin told NBC News. "I think, at this point, it is more of a test of organization. ... The prediction was that it would either be Ron Paul or Michele Bachmann, because they spent a lot of time and energy to make sure they had delegates there who would cast those votes

Doh! That’s funny.
And money. Cain spent more time there than both Paul and Bachmann, but they spent millions, he spent $100k. They bought 6000 tickets, he did not buy votes. They had radio and TV ads, he did not.
His is all grassroots.
Also poor Mittens..he came in what, 4th place..I was expecting him to win since everyone considers him the “Frontrunner” even though he is a liberal RINO..but it was still surprising to see him lose
Romney wasn’t there and didn’t even have a tent space/booth there. So why would you expect him to win?
Oh well I did not know about the tent thing, but I thought that since everyone considered him a frontrunner that he would win the straw poll, but I Guess after he did so poorly at the debate people did not vote for him.
He did win in 07... That seems ominous in and of itself. Good riddance!
Even if Cain doesn’t make the top four...his ‘political investment’ has put him on the scene so Americans fully know about him...as well as politicians....good move on his part no matter the outcome. We won’t be seeing the end of Cain no matter how this plays out.
Who are the people that cast ballots in the Iowa straw poll? What are their “demographics” or other indicators of probable general viewpoint or political bent?
HAHA yeah, let’s hope he drops out of the race, I dont see it happening though, his ego is too big, but if he loses NH or SC he is finished.
Romney wasn’t even at the event in Ames today. Only six of the announced candidates were there, had booths and made a speech to the attendees today. Yes he did participate in the Fox debate a couple days ago.
Take care and have a good one.
Oh I see, thanks for letting me know. I am still getting familiar with how the straw polling works. Oh so the poll had nothing to do with the debate that Fox had, this is a totally separate thing? I see, thanks for the info, you take care too!!
the liberal scumbags appear to be quite unnerved over the implications of her victory. I love it. I would love to see President Bachmann. Democrats would be hanging themselves in despair especially after she forces them to attend heterosexuality training camps. LOL
my understanding is middle-age evangelicals for the most part were voting....but the straw poll is really meaningless because first of all its all about bribing people to vote with food, entertainment etc....(lets see who they vote for without the food and prizes in the caucus) and second of all, these voters are not 100% committed to one candidate, they will jump ship possibly as things start to shift later on and other candidates drop out.
which of the candidates were
giving away the tickets you
need to have to vote?
I think it was Bachmann and Paul and you can see the results - these things are bribes and highest dollar payouts for food...entertainment...etc
Every single thing you list in your post just makes me wonder why Iowa has such a say in presidential politics. Or any kind of politics for that matter... everyone is quick to quip that we should sell California off to pay down our debts to China but I could think of a few other places to start.
Pay-for-play, GOP-style. Interesting that, according to a report I saw, the first call to MB congratulating her was from Mitt Romney. Wonder what he said? :)
whoever has the best giveaway deal would get my straw!!
If I had been there, I guess that would have been Bachman.
I’ve always been a cynic. As I find out how things really work, I am becoming a jaded cynic.
The candidates “entertain”, buy tickets for their voters and very often bring in their own supporters.
So I guess the only real value is name recognition and the results of this straw poll are really meaningless.
I agree and I think it’s embarrassing. It’s propaganda in a way - so they can say they came out 1st, 2nd or 3rd - whatever - when it means jacksh*! Those who aren’t paying attention will, by design, get sucked into the results.
Palin still hasn’t commented on McCain’s attack on the Tea Party, but she comments on a worthless Iowa straw poll?
What’s going on with her?
To show how worthless straw polls are, Pat Robertson ran away with the Iowa straw poll one year.
Say what you will about Mitt Romney and how truly meaningless the IA Straw Poll is other than as a winnowing tool, but calling MB to congratulate her is a lot classier than telling some MSM reporter that MB’s win was no big surprise (which it wasn’t). Sorry, but that’s just tacky.
lol I know. Was WONDERFUL. Now if he’d just come in 4th when we get to he Caucus.
I agree that they’re meaningless, when you have Ron Paul coming in a close second, and Bachmann’s antagonist , Tim Pawlenty, spending lots of energy directly trying to discredit her as if THEY were the presumptive “front-runners” and one of them had to go.But hey what do I know-—it must have worked, look who came in third-—Pawlenty.
He came across very poorly, and looked like a bully besides.
Let’s hope Huntsman disappears immediately-—if there was ANYONE who didn’t belong on that stage, it was him. And wasn’t he the only one who made a point of cheering the Boehner plan?
Why is the truth suddenly tacky?
And a conman calling to congratulate somehow classy?
Call me cynical (because I am), but Mitt Romney calling to Michelle Bachmann to congratulate her, is almost condescending, its also presumptuous but its clear he is acting very much like a front runner.........Its also slick, in that it gives the image that he wants, where he, the front runner, called the presumed upstart, and pretends to take the high road, kudos on strategy, but I don't like it.
As for Palin, I have no idea what the context was off this comment, and what she else she said, while many are defending her, or attacking her, to me, there is to little information for me to do either, the media has a tendency to chop her comments in a way to portray her in the worst light possible, and also is attempting to make this into some kind of "cat fight". I won't attack her or defend her comments here, but I will give her the benefit of the doubt after having seen so many of her comments taken out of context to manipulate public opinion regarding her.
Michelle is amazing, impressing more and more with every appearance! Sarah sounds a little bitter after her movie flopped.
So, SP/MB won’t happen?
calling MB to congratulate her is a lot classier than telling some MSM reporter that MBs win was no big surprise (which it wasnt). Sorry, but thats just tacky. So should everyone who isn't a candidate call MB to congratulate her, or just the ones you despise?...Did Perry call?
before you use words like worthless...with all due respect
they indicate the nominee from 63-75% of the time last 8 election cycles for the GOP-Dems respectively
they are not worthless
but they are not ironclad...I wonder how they compare to Dixville Notch as an indicator of each party’s nominee?
(looking it up.....)
much much higher rate of predicting eventual nominee
still hardly Carnack...but can weed the outliers down
I’m just happy a social conservative won and has been leading polls ...it’s only been 27 years
She was asked a question about it. She didn’t volunteer it out of the blue and unless you heard her you can’t really say whether it was tacky or not. You’d first have to know the actual question (and the tone of Palin’s answer). For instance, “Were you surprised at Michelle Bachmann’s win?” and “No I wasn’t surprised” is pretty innocuous.
Were she to not answer the question someone would be making hay out of that as well. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
I just watched video of the debate ...With the exception of Ron Paul and Herman Cain , the rest are phoney baloneys ! Not that I support either of the aforementioned , its just that the others look like they are Hollywood scripted . The American public has become Americanidolized . Maybe it takes an ex-pat like myself to see that .
I would expect him to have a chance at winning because he and his views are already well known, but that's with the assumption the voters there agreed with his views. They didn't.
Cain did buy tickets because my sister got one from him.
Some don't even care who gives them a free ticket. There are other groups making free tickets available. Strong America Now called my home offering me a free ticket.
Of course, there will be shifts, especially after some begin to drop out.
He may have been as low as seventh. Romney can’t feel good about the results of the Straw Poll.
Neither was Perry and He got 700 write in Votes!
I believe there is very little reflection on a candidates' votes and what they offered to voters. When everyone is offering them, then there is little loyalty to a candidate because they offered a free ticket.
Folks make their selections and then get the tickets.
Who said Mitt calling MB to congratulate her wasn't classy? I didn't.
Who immediately seized upon the oppportunity to offer an opinion about Gov. Palin's "tackiness". You did.
