Why Perry may be the real deal
Hot Air ^ | 8/14/11 | Ed Morrissey

My good friends John Hinderaker and Scott Johnson offer eulogies for the Tim Pawlenty presidential campaign today at Power Line, and as usual, they are quite insightful. Scott says that Pawlenty’s descent started when he backed down from challenging Mitt Romney in an earlier debate, and notes that Republicans in this cycle want a fighter. John laments the loss of the one candidate he thought could easily beat Barack Obama based on his record, and says that Pawlenty never got past “the first impression of him as just another guy in a suit.” Both are fair conclusions, and be sure to read both posts in their entirety.

However, both Scott and John express some reservations about Rick Perry and his ability to be a “viable alternative” to Mitt Romney and/or Obama himself. I’ve been covering Perry as a potential candidate since April 2010, when he rocked the house with a speech to the Southern Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans. Even then, while being challenged in the primary for his third term as Texas governor by Kay Bailey Hutchison, his appeal as a presidential candidate was apparent:

I’ve seen Perry give speeches on television (mainly on YouTube) and knew he could be dynamic. Earlier in the day, I mentioned that alone among the other speakers on the ticket today, Perry had the only shot at matching the energy of Sarah Palin’s appearance. Perry has a very active delivery, in the same manner as a preacher. He doesn’t stand still, but instead puts his whole body into what he says. Perry’s speech turned a political conference into a Republican revival meeting, complete with the call to action at the end.

I am. I don’t think Perry can hold together for a National spotlight. I also think he has too many negatives with the GOP and the Tea Party. Too much RINO for us and too unpredictable for the GOP leadership.

I am no expert by any means, but I don’t think he stands much of a chance. *shrug*

Inflation? This is ten years we're talking about.

Right. More excuses. Tell me exactly how Perry won't be as big, if not a bigger spender than Obummer is right now.

What this country needs is an Executive who knows how to smartly CUT spending, not "go along" and increase it all the time. Perry's not the cost-cutting executive type.

Honestly, only Palin stands a chance.

Tell me exactly how Perry won't be as big, if not a bigger spender than Obummer is right now.

Hyperbole much? Texas' GDP has grown dramatically over the past 10 years so it is understandable that spending would also increase.Texas' population grew almost twice as fast as the nation's over the past 10 years. That means more highways, schools, hospitals, prisons etc.

Texas government is highly decentralized which is why 85% of all public debt happens at the local level. This kind of spending is normally supported by revenue and user fees. Standard & Poor's gives Texas an AA+ rating because it has an outperforming economy, strong cash management and constitutional limits on debt. S&P said that "Texas has what we consider to be a very low net debt burden." Texas borrows to build things (highways, hospitals, schools, treatment plants, prisons). Those things will ensure the continued growth of the Texas economy well into the future. Yeah, just like Obama's doing for us from Washington, DC.

Anyone trying to compare spending in Texas with attempts by the Marxist in the White House to destroy our country isn't paying attention or doesn't understand the difference.

To remove the liberal speak, "revenue" means TAXES and "user fees" is another way of saying TAXES for services that are supposed to be provided by TAXES, but the "Government" needs the "revenue" so they created a user fee.

This is how you justify a 100% spending increase? "Revenue" and "User Fees?"

Over the last 10 years, Perry has stood up well under scrutiny from the brutal Texas and National press.

Between our daily papers and the monthly liberal rags, he’s been investigated and every rumor has been chased down. Currently, the local Austin NPR online news piece is using money from George Soros in an attempt to expose any weakness.

They hate his faith, his pro-marriage and -life stands and especially hate his belief - the Texas belief - that our State with the 17th largest economy in the world is exceptional. And worst of all, he believes America is the best Nation in the world.

This kind of spending is normally supported by revenue and user fees.

This means they have the money to support the project, unlike Obama's spending, and that the public has approved issuing the debt (and the user fees etc) at the ballot box to pay for the project. In Texas, people make decisions at the local level based on what's best for that particular community/county. Yeah, that's exactly like what Obama's doing in DC..........good grief.

Local borrowing accounts for almost 85 percent of public debt in Texas. This debt is borne by local government, not state government. That's why, on a per capita bassis, only one state (TN) has a smaller state tax burden than Texas. This is also why Texas has one of the lowest amounts of (state) debt of any state in the country.

If local governments need to issue debt to build new roads, schools, hospitals, waster water treatement plants and so on, to accommodate the massive growth Texas has experienced over the past ten years, just what do you expect Governor Perry to do about it?

Texas is spending money because its economy is growing and will continue grow well into the future. Be honest, does this situation sound similar to Obama throwing our tax money at his unionista buddies and pissing the rest away down rat holes that support his chosen people? The two couldn't be further apart. There are legitimate issues where Perry deserves criticism. This ain't one of them.

In more other words, Perry is a politician who will tell you what you want to hear then take a big bovine dump on your shoes -- kinda like that guy who's in the WH right now.
