"People are just plain scared," said Nancy Bryan, owner of Santa Ana, Calif.-based Maximum Security, who noted that sales started increasing about three years ago at the onset of the recession.

Brown Safe said many of its customers have been making purchases over the past few weeks because they no longer trust their banks and are uncertain about stocks.

I personally recommend something from the Rhino Steel Buckhoorn collection (I have no financial interest in them, I just like the products) in the 47 cubic foot range.

Wow, you have 47 cubic feet of stuff valuable enough to lock into a safe?

Would you mind if I asked you what your address is? :-)

Who needs a safe when you have a mattress?

I think I'll continue to store my treasures in heaven "where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal".

About twenty years ago I paid 1.5K for a beautiful Browning Gun Safe, which was just a little smaller than a refrigerator. Sadly, all my guns were lost in a recent boating accident, and I no longer need the safe. Despite what this article says, no one wants to buy the safe. I can't even give it away!

A safe can be useful.

Just make certain it is very heavy....but not so heavy that a thief can’t cart it away after a lot of struggling. Fill it with trash that will rattle around and make a lot of noise.

Then put the real valuables in a shoe box and slide it behind the water heater.

Give em a big, heavy surprise package to open later ;-)

I once got a portable safe from one of the big box stores to keep personal papers safe. But the key and lock components were so cheap, I couldn’t unlock or open the thing half the time. I had to toss it.

I can relate. All my guns were lost in a tragic incident while fishing. I neglected to mention that my safe now contains gardening tools.
