Jersey stabbings: Six die in knife attack(UK)

Posted on 08/15/2011 7:05:18 AM PDT by marktwain

Six people, including three children, have been killed in a knife attack on the usually peaceful island of Jersey.

Police say a man, two women and the children were attacked at a flat in a secluded part of the capital, St Helier, on Sunday afternoon.

A 30-year-old man, who had emergency surgery after the attack, has been arrested in connection with the deaths.

Police have not named the dead but say they lived in Jersey. Witnesses believe they were all related.

Officers were called to Upper Midvale Road at 15:00 BST on Sunday after reports of an incident at a flat in Victoria Crescent, which spilled outside on to the street.

Forensic officers have been examining the scene as police interview a number of witnesses to try to identify the victims.

Meanwhile, they are holding the suspect in police custody at Jersey General Hospital where he is recovering from surgery.

'Complex investigation'

States of Jersey Police head of crime services Stewart Gull, who is leading the inquiry, said: "Clearly this complex investigation is in its very early stages as we try to establish exactly what happened.

"We are mindful, too, of the impact of any such serious and tragic incident on the local community, and we have police officers in the area to support the investigation and local people."

Mr Gull, who led the inquiry into the murder of five Ipswich women in 2006, admitted he was shaken by the Jersey incident and said it had been "pretty traumatic" for emergency services staff called to the scene.

"Dealing with multiple deaths of men, women and particularly young children, it has shaken the force but the officers who initially responded were tremendously professional," he said.

"Jersey is an incredibly safe island, probably one of the safest places in the western world. Incidents of this nature are an extremely rare occurrence."

He added that he was unable to confirm the victims' nationalities, speculate as to their relationship with each other or give the ages of the children.

A major incident room has been set up and police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

Some residents were unable to return to their homes while the crime scene was cordoned off.

Authorities, however, opened the town hall and a residential home to give them somewhere to stay.

Witness Andre Thorpe said he thought all the victims were members of the same family.

He said: "Two ambulances turned up first because it was within a quarter of mile of the ambulance station. Then four or five police vehicles came.

"They were trying to access a private house in the crescent. It was an old Victorian terrace, a lot of them are split into flats."

Mr Thorpe added the area where the incident happened was quite secluded.

"I was first aware something was happening when I saw people looking out for the ambulances as I walked up the road," he said.

Another unnamed neighbour reported hearing children screaming.

"It was not like a playful scream - they were really screaming," he said.

Jersey General Hospital's emergency department was temporarily closed to all non-urgent cases as staff treated the victims.

Making it rather hard for anyone to have an idea of what went on.

Jersey, Guernsey, and Alderney are the ones with cows named after them. The whole group of 8 or so are called “The Channel Islands.”

I wish to conquer them, and rename them Lazaparadise.

They were Polish. And, by the way, 'Asian' isn't UK for 'Arab' - it's UK for anybody originating from the Indian sub-continent (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka).

Bovine Excrement!

Not wanting to jump to conclusisons but for whatever reason (could be there are other suspects at large?) this person is lying out his butt.

They, by now, have ID's the family and "suspect" and whenever LEO refuse to release the names, it usually end up being one that we automatically associate with they who are responsible for most of the ills and evil being perpetrated in the world, today.

Just sayin'!!!

The UK term for Arab is... Arab.

Asian here = Pakistani, Indian, Bangladeshi or Sri Lankan.

"Never knew of the Island of Jersey."

I had heard only heard of it in relation to it's being the birth place of the actress and royal mistress (King Edward VII), Lilly Langtry. She was considered quite the beauty in her day.

Six people stabbed - why is that even news in Jersey? In Camden, that’s called ‘Saturday night’.

Oh wait, we’re talking about that little island, aren’t we?

Given I’m British, have lived in the UK for 30 years, and live in an area where there are large communities of both Asians (Indians and Pakistanis) and Arabs, I’m going to go with the definition that I, and 60,000,000 other British citizens, use for Asian.

Asian does not mean Arab here. It really, really, really doesn’t, and no matter how many times people from America, or anywhere else, try to say that it does, it doesn’t.

Maybe I need to clarify- it is what the liberal MEDIA call arabs. Not the population in general

Same is true in America. You cannot find a libtard anywhere who will use the word Arab or Muzlim (or even diaper-head) when referring to terrorists.

Erm... no.

The media here, from all areas of the political spectrum, refers to Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis and Sri Lankans as Asian. It has absolutely nothing to do with religion.

Hence: A Muslim Pakistani would be referred to as an Asian, a Christian Indian would be referred to as an Asian, a Hindu Indian would be referred to as an Asian. Conversely, it would be highly bizarre in the British context to refer to an Arab of Christian or Muslim faith as Asian here - given that there are only a few thousand Arabs living in the UK and the vast majority of immigrants come from Indian and Pakistan the use of the term Asian normally refers to people from those areas. Not from the Middle East, which is a distinct area, culturally and politically.

There is a clear distinction in the UK between what we term “Asian” and what is considered “Middle Eastern” or “Arab”. The peoples we refer to as Asian are not Middle Eastern. Nor is the term Asian, as mentioned, synonymous with Muslim.

A British Arab would be referred to here as either Arab, or from the country they come from, e.g. Lebanese, Syrian, Iraqi etc.

If you watched the media here, you’d rapidly realise that references to Asians or the Asian community refers to either the Pakistani or Indian communities living in the UK. These encompass at least 3 religions - Islam, Hinduism and Sikhism. Its taken as read by most people that the media refer to the Pakistani community that they are referring to Muslims - as that is what most British Pakistanis are.

I would imagine it would depend upon which terrorists they are referring to. Certainly here I’ve read in liberal British newspapers references to Muslim terrorists. Just as I’ve read about Catholic or Protestant terrorists (N. Ireland) or evangelical terrorists (Joseph Kony).
