In sharp contrast to the national Republican Party line, Texas Gov. Rick Perry still supports his state's version of the so-called DREAM Act, which permits foreign-born children of illegal immigrants to pay in-state college tuition. "To punish these young Texans for their parents' actions is not what America has always been about," the potential dark horse GOP candidate told the New Hampshire Union Leader in his first New Hampshire interview of the 2012 campaign cycle.
Perry has not yet announced whether he will run for president, but he polls well. Real Clear Politics's average of polls, for example, puts him in fourth place behind former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Rep. Michele Bachmann, and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who is also undeclared. Perry opposes passing such legislation on the federal level, but his stance on immigration could tarnish his star among conservatives, who have fought efforts in other states and the U.S. Congress to pass similar legislation. Critics see such laws as a giveaway to people who have broken the law and unfair to American citizens who have to pay out-of-state tuition to attend universities across state lines.

That’s why Texas took the national lead in allowing such deserving young minds to attend a Texas college at a resident rate”
He wants taxpayers to finance the education of the children of illegals, let them fill our classrooms and use up our resources, and even go so far as to let them go to our universities so they can take away the jobs of Americans...
All because “it’s not fair” that they should have to suffer. Sounds like quite an incentive for more illegals to pour over the borders.
As a compassionate state, we know that for our children to succeed, they must not only be healthy, but educated.The future leaders of our two nations are learning their fractions and their ABC’s in classrooms all along this border. Immigrants from around the world are being taught in Texas classrooms, and our history is rich with examples of new citizens who have made great contributions.
We must say to everyTexas child learning in a Texas classroom, “we don’t care where you come from, but where you are going, and we are going to do everything we can to help you get there.” And that vision must include the children of undocumented workers.
That’s why Texas took the national lead in allowing such deserving young minds to attend a Texas college at a resident rate. Those young minds are a part of a new generation of leaders, the doors of higher education must be open to them. The message is simple: educacion es el futuro, y si se puede.
It is my understanding any kid who attends Texas pblic schools for 3 years gets in-state tuition if admitted to a state university?
If based on this issue you don’t want to vote for someone who thinks kids of undocumented parents should be treated the same way, in hopes the kids will become educated higher earning future taxpayers, then don’t vote for Governor Perry.

No, Rick. The point is that we should NOT REWARD children for their parents’ unlawful acts. Otherwise, we incent the parents to commit those unlawful acts.
No, let me go on record as saying I believe U.S. citizenship means something, and that breaking our laws should not be rewarded.

Sarah Palin is a presidential contender who has been firm and consistent in her support for Governor Brewer’s fight against illegal immigration in Arizona.
He’s dreaming if he thinks I’ll support another Jorge Bush or Juan McCain.

We are going to be on the hook for welfare to low paid or jobless youth, or on the hook for state-rate college tuition for those who qualify to go to college (presumably the brightest and most motivated)

I have to agree with the governor, to include these kids with every other 3 yr student at a Texas school, including plenty of kids whose American parents are bums, druggies and winos

This is a smart move for Perry and only confirms my support for him. The Hispanic vote will be crucial next year. Obama is losing the Hispanics and Perry is smart to try and win their support. Now if he picks Rubio as his VP, then there’s no stopping the GOP in Nov. ‘12.

If he won the election he would help pass amnesty for millions of illegals and hand this country right back to the dems, probably for good with all those new dem voters. I see no need for deportations. No one will support it because it seems cruel.
What I would do is enforce electronic document checks for new hires, and fine employers who hire illegals 50,000 dollars for each violation.
Employers would stop hiring illegals, and the illegals would self-deport. End of problem....

I used to be opposed to the Maryland DREAM act but on reading it, it makes sense to get behind this and use it to assimilate the next generation, rather than than perpetuate how the parents are living and whine about “It’s not FAAIIRRR ‘cause the parents did something illegal to get here....”
Especially when the kids of every American citizen druggie and junkie and 5th generation welfare mama in the state of Maryland are eligible for cheap community college, if they had the ambition and smarts to work for it

YES! My question to all the Perrybots defending this: doesn’t this ENCOURAGE more illegal immigration? Why wouldn’t this give Mexicans even more incentive to come here in bigger droves than they already are?

Unfortunately it is belivable. Had you been around here in 2006 thru 2008 you would have read the same comments from numerous FReepers defending Bush and McCain on their push for immigration reform legislation.
