Rick Perry Stands By Texas DREAM Act
U.S. News and World Report ^ | July 25, 2011 | Mallie Jane Kim

Posted on 08/15/2011 10:51:41 AM PDT by Do Not Make Fun Of His Ears

In sharp contrast to the national Republican Party line, Texas Gov. Rick Perry still supports his state's version of the so-called DREAM Act, which permits foreign-born children of illegal immigrants to pay in-state college tuition. "To punish these young Texans for their parents' actions is not what America has always been about," the potential dark horse GOP candidate told the New Hampshire Union Leader in his first New Hampshire interview of the 2012 campaign cycle.

Perry has not yet announced whether he will run for president, but he polls well. Real Clear Politics's average of polls, for example, puts him in fourth place behind former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Rep. Michele Bachmann, and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who is also undeclared. Perry opposes passing such legislation on the federal level, but his stance on immigration could tarnish his star among conservatives, who have fought efforts in other states and the U.S. Congress to pass similar legislation. Critics see such laws as a giveaway to people who have broken the law and unfair to American citizens who have to pay out-of-state tuition to attend universities across state lines.

A look at liberal Maryland in the past several months will show exactly how the people feel about the Dream Act. Our governor signed a similar bill into law this spring and the people took to the petition streets to garner signatures to put this on the ballot. I believe around 52,000 confirmed signatures of registered voters were required and there were double that number of confirmed voter's signatures!

This is an issue that crosses party lines and is a BIG DEAL.

This is a smart move for Perry and only confirms my support for him. The Hispanic vote will be crucial next year. Obama is losing the Hispanics and Perry is smart to try and win their support. Now if he picks Rubio as his VP, then there’s no stopping the GOP in Nov. ‘12.

All the DREAM Act will do is to encourage even more illegals to cross the border.

>We may have to hold our noses....<

Not if yiou jump off Rick Perry’s little red pickup truck right now and get behind a true American Conservative, Michelle Bachmann.

I will never hold my nose to vote again. it is time for the people of this country to come together to do the right thing for our own survival! NO MORE RINOs!

Bush II - warmed over lightly.

When Perry crashes and burns, expect the GOP establishment to pick Chris Christie and try and run him. But he is a much bigger target for conservative critics.

That’s why we need the federal government to secure the border.

There it is. Ive been screaming it from day one, RICK PERRY IS NOT A CONSERVATIVE AND IS NO GOOD!! If he won the election he would help pass amnesty for millions of illegals and hand this country right back to the dems, probably for good with all those new dem voters. People think it got bad quick with the dems in control, wait until they have control with NO chance of being voted out.

Very reasonable response - and Perry’s was a reasonable policy as well. Too bad both of you are catching so much flak.

Like that's ever going to happen.

So you're willing to surrender conservative principles, U.S. sovereignty and ignore the rule of law to pander for the Hispanic vote. All on the taxpayer dime. Duly noted. Can't enforce existing laws now, can we? /sarc

Spoken like a true RINO. You sound like Señor Jorge Bush.

A real heavyweight, too.

Rick Perry is a nanny state statist, unafraid to spend taxpayer money in support of illegals in return for political favor.

I see no need for deportations. No one will support it because it seems cruel.

What I would do is enforce electronic document checks for new hires, and fine employers who hire illegals 50,000 dollars for each violation.

Employers would stop hiring illegals, and the illegals would self-deport. End of problem....

You really think Mexicans are going to hire coyotes to smuggle them across the desert so their kids can attend public school for 3 years to get a tuition break?

I used to be opposed to the Maryland DREAM act but on reading it, it makes sense to get behind this and use it to assimilate the next generation, rather than than perpetuate how the parents are living and whine about “It’s not FAAIIRRR ‘cause the parents did something illegal to get here....”

Especially when the kids of every American citizen druggie and junkie and 5th generation welfare mama in the state of Maryland are eligible for cheap community college, if they had the ambition and smarts to work for it

Sometimes life isn’t fair. So how do we make the best of it..

Conservatives ought to be giving these kids scholarship money for writing essays about America’s conservative heritage and the opportunities it creates
for them and their children
