Rick Perry Stands By Texas DREAM Act
U.S. News and World Report ^ | July 25, 2011 | Mallie Jane Kim

Posted on 08/15/2011 10:51:41 AM PDT by Do Not Make Fun Of His Ears

In sharp contrast to the national Republican Party line, Texas Gov. Rick Perry still supports his state's version of the so-called DREAM Act, which permits foreign-born children of illegal immigrants to pay in-state college tuition. "To punish these young Texans for their parents' actions is not what America has always been about," the potential dark horse GOP candidate told the New Hampshire Union Leader in his first New Hampshire interview of the 2012 campaign cycle.

Perry has not yet announced whether he will run for president, but he polls well. Real Clear Politics's average of polls, for example, puts him in fourth place behind former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Rep. Michele Bachmann, and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who is also undeclared. Perry opposes passing such legislation on the federal level, but his stance on immigration could tarnish his star among conservatives, who have fought efforts in other states and the U.S. Congress to pass similar legislation. Critics see such laws as a giveaway to people who have broken the law and unfair to American citizens who have to pay out-of-state tuition to attend universities across state lines.

No, as a matter of fact, you answered none of these questions. All you did was copy and paste. I will ask once more:

Please explain why the children of illegals should have the same advantages of a higher education that U.S. citizens do.

Please explain why they should be rewarded, so they can take away even more jobs from our citizens.

Please explain why taxpayers should reward their lawbreaking by paying for their education, and allowing them access to other resources, rather than enforcing the laws against using illegal labor.

Please tell me what part of “illegal” you do not understand.

If you can’t answer them, so be it.

I will “bump” your thread one more time. LOOK at my post I clearly have written my thoughts in it. LOOK if you can take a minute away from your frenzied, idiotic posting.

I read your "copy and paste" quite thoroughly. You did not answer in any way the questions I asked.

I also notice you are all over FR today trying to put out fires, to conceal or explain away Perry's betrayal of conservative principles (for example, the vaccine mandate).

I will accept your failure to answer these questions as a sign that you have no clue how to answer them. Have a nice day! ;-)

Even if this were a morally superior solution we don’t need more people in college we need more in SHOP CLASS.

I agree.

Perry has some ideas about that too.

Rick Perry Leads the Way on Higher-Ed Reform [snip] First, runaway college costs are an important “kitchen table” issue for American families. After the economic woes of the past decade, many families are wondering how they are going to afford to send their kids to college (the yearly cost of attending an in-state four-year public college now tops $16,000 per year).

Second, like our public schools, America’s colleges are woefully underperforming. The authors of the recently published book Academically Adrift: Limited Learning on College Campuses found that 45 percent of college students show no improvement in critical skills after two years in college. Troubling statistics are forcing many families to question whether investing time and money in college is really worth it, particularly since many college graduates are struggling to find employment and appear to have gained few marketable skills.

Troubling statistics are forcing many families to question whether investing time and money in college is really worth it, particularly since many college graduates are struggling to find employment and appear to have gained few marketable skills.

Third, colleges are creating a heavy burden for taxpayers. According to the National Association of State Budget Officers, higher-ed spending accounts for approximately 10 percent of state spending. And federal subsidies for higher education (including grants, loans, tax credits, and direct payments to schools) amount to well over $100 billion annually.

Fourth, colleges have long been an intellectual driver of progressivism in American life. I am sure I am not the only person who found my undergraduate and graduate school years to have been a tiring indoctrination in leftist ideas. It is surely no coincidence that young American voters are more included to vote for the Left after this indoctrination.

For too long, the Right has neglected the need to challenge and reform American higher education. But in the current political climate, reforming colleges and universities (as well as our student-aid policies) is an eminently winnable fight — and one that would yield big gains for students and taxpayers.

Conservative leaders around the country should follow Rick Perry’s lead. [end]

Then you are also for a national “Dream Act”. I’m guesing that you think amnesty for illegals will be a “smart move” as well in order to garner more hispanic votes. Hows about curtailing all border security? Would that also be a “smart move” to garner more hispanic votes?

Why don’t we just toss in reparations while we’re at it, to seal up to African-American vote?

And then after your “dream team” provides 30-50 million illegals with amnesty, the leftists will NEVER lose another election. Good plan.

Really - you'd prefer to have 4 more years of Obama, a committed socialist, before lowering yourself to vote for someone you see as being insufficiently conservative. Good to know.

You know people keep throwing around the RINO label, but people like you are CINOs - conservatives in name only. If we accept Reagan as the yardstick against which to measure conservatism, then you are far from conservative. Reagan would have voted for ANY of the Republicans running in the general election against Obama, even if they were not as conservative as he would like - because he would know they are a lot more conservative than Obama will ever be.

Reagan was not one to forego making small gains whenever he could. His strategy was to keep moving toward the goal. In football terms, Reagan would go for the long bomb if he had a man clear, but was perfectly happy to make a 3 yard run if that is what was available. Too many on this forum seem to want to take an all-or-nothing strategy - throwing the bomb even when the deep man is triple-covered and there is an open man 5 yards up the field, on the slim hope of success. So even if you think there are better candidates, if you want to make ANY gains toward taking back this country, you need to vigorously support your preferred candidate in the primaries, and then vigorously support the nominee in the general.

Sarah Palin is a presidential contender who has been firm and consistent in her support for Governor Brewer’s fight against illegal immigration in Arizona.

Darn, I missed her announcement.

Why are yo assuming all the Mexican nationals are impoverished ? Is there any means testing going on in Texas when it comes to instate tuition. I’ll answer that question for you. No there isn’t.

Your excuses for illegal aliens getting tuition breaks that US citizens from other states can’t get is disgusting.

Why am I assuming all Mexicans who illegally enter Texas are impoverished? Well, good question. Welfare and MEDICAID costs suggest a lot of them are.

If I move to Texas for 3 years and send my kids to school there, they get in-state tuition, and I am not means tested. So the Texas tuition “breaks” ARE available to all US citizens

Your argument that illegal aliens can afford to pay foreign student tuition rates seems unlikely, but instead of describing your views as disgusting, I'll say go ahead and means-test them - and the rest of Texas students

I don't think providing subsidized higher education to a second generation of illegals who are not going anywhere, anytime soon, is a disgusting idea. I think in their case subsidized college tuition is good business and a good investment in changing things over the next 20 years for the better of all ... including you whose doctor may someday be an immigrant

You can choose to marginalize and despise the next generation for the sins of their fathers, and hope your anger at the “unfairness” of what their parents did drives them out of America.....or you can figure figure out how to assmilate them and maybe even grow some new conservatives - but not if they associate conservatism with your angry views

As you can continue to marginalize the laws of this country and close your eyes to the free for all at the border by handing out candy to people who break our laws and encourage them to continue to do so.

You are correct in theory, but look what going for a yard or two has gotten us the past 45 years. The country didn’t suddenly dump conservative values and switch to socialism two plus years ago. We’ve been drifting down this path for many years always going for the “electable” RINO and circling the drain the whole time to the point we are now going down the drain. When do you call enough is a enough and pick your hill to die on? We can’t keep doing this RINO dance. It doesn’t work.
2012 is our hill. Let’s make it count.
