I think that using Predators to track drugs would not be a good idea.
Fly them in Mexico would be illegal.
Fly them in the U.S. and you are spying on American citizens.
The answer is when people are caught with a large amount of contraband put them in a hard labor prison for a very long time, forty years minimum.

So use them to track the illegals! And then bring other assets to bear on the illegal bands in a focussed manner. Anything is better than what’s going on now. People on the border are being forced to hire private security teams to protect their property. What a travesty!
Oh, to Hell with prison!
Make drug running a capitol offense: just hang ‘em.
Maintain scaffolds all along the border as a reminder of the penalty to those crossing with illicit drugs.

Amen; lets get off our a$$es as a country and do something. The illegals and drug runners will think twice if something is flying overhead. especially if it leads to something happening.

Decriminalize or legalize drugs.
The problem of drug running evaporates.
Mexico will be our next war. Their gubermint is even more corrupt than ours, if thats possible, and they cant even begin to handle the problem.
How many times have we had Mexican military on our side of the borders the last year?
Put the US Army on the border, locked and loaded. To be sure, we will not be able to cover the whole border, but someones gonna take notice and it aint gonna be us.
Start with the buffer no go zones on our side and work out form there.
Shoot them on the spot...no prison time..that cost American taxpayers...
Drug running isn’t the problem; drug use is the problem. Legalizing drugs doesn’t solve jack-sh*t.

This link has been documented in over 30 different scientific studies (studies done mostly in the UK, Australia and Sweden) over the past 20 years. In one example, a study interviewed 50,000 members of the Swedish Army about their drug consumption and followed up with them later in life. Those who were heavy consumers of cannabis at age 18 were over 600% more likely to be diagnosed with schizophrenia over the next 15 years than those did not take it. (see diagram below). Experts estimate that between 8% and 13% of all schizophrenia cases are linked to marijuna / cannabis use during teen years.
So, he suggests having several hundred drones patrolling the border? It would take at least that many. Politcians never can do simple math.
Legalization solve most of the problems.
It removes the huge profit motives.
It removes the street violence and crime associated with supply and demand.
It removes that aspect of corruption to customs, border patrol, DEA, the judiciary, and LEO across the country.
It allows addicts to seek treatment without fear of prosecution.
It also removes the need for ‘designer drugs’ and spin offs.
I hope that you don’t wrongly infer this as an endorsement of drug abuse.
You wouldn't need several hundred. ISR packages on the drones these days are better than ever. Terrain analysis and intel analysis will narrow your search areas and times as well. You'd hit pretty solid diminishing returns on investment past 50 or so. Lots of operators and infrastructure to even go that high.
Either way, it's better to go after the employers and get the illegals to deport themselves. This whack a mole stuff is what we play on the AfPak border. Been there, done that. Pass.
Legalization solves nothing.
You are deluded if you think the drug cartels will give up their already established infrastructure. They won’t and it will still be violent and messy. Here’s why.
Big corporations will move to take over production of marijuana, just adding it to their tobacco production. Then they’ll use millions of dollars to influence Congress and choke off the right of individuals to grow their own, with BATFE enforcing the new regulations. Yep, doors will still be getting kicked in during the middle of the night!
And yes, drugs will be heavily taxed, which is why there will exist a Black Market operated by the drug cartels.
The huge profit motive doesn’t go away, sweetheart; it just shifts a bit.

Organized crime mushroomed with alcohol prohibition.
Repealing prohibition relieved the violence and other problems associated with prohibition.
Tobacco has never been illegal and has never provoked the crime that alcohol and drug prohibition has.
The models are already there and proven; prohibition fails.
