Together We Can Beat the Deficit We did it in the 1990s and we can do it again today. By PATTY MURRAY, MAX BAUCUS AND JOHN KERRY

Our country has long been a beacon of light in the world because the American people always come together when times are tough. Over the past few months, in debating the debt ceiling and deficit reduction, that light of common cause has appeared to flicker at times in our nation's capital. As appointees to the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction—12 members of Congress charged with finding $1.5 trillion in deficit reduction over the next decade—we hope to remedy that.

This is not going to be an easy task. Washington is mired in gridlock, and pundits and special interests from both sides of the aisle are already heaving boulders at our committee. But this issue is too critical to be examined through the typical ideological lens. And if this committee is going to deliver the results Americans deserve, we are going to need to meet eye-to-eye as people despite outside efforts to divide us as partisans.

Make no mistake, this is an important moment for our country. Millions of Americans are still hurting, working overtime to pay the bills, struggling to find a job and a way forward for their families. Trillions of dollars in private capital are sitting on the sidelines because businesses are not yet confident enough in our economy or in their lawmakers to invest in the future. These families and businesses are demanding that this new committee work together to overcome the partisanship and brinksmanship of recent months and put our fiscal house in order.

Max Baucus lecturing on deficit reduction? That’s like Lady Gagme lecturing on humility....it just don’t work.

Yes. A lot of lofty language that always ends with the taxpayer getting the bill.

Gee thanks.

Power Line Blog held a $100,000 prize competition for the most effective and creative dramatization of the significance of the federal debt situation. Any creative product was eligible — videos, songs, paintings, screenplays, Power Point presentations, essays, performance art, or anything else

Several entries have gotten a lot of attention and a lot of views or listens. But the one that has drawn the most interest so far is Doorbell.

How would $1.5T over a whole decade help?

I’m not subscribing in order to read the article, so I’ll just guess that the prescription for beating the deficit is to increase spending— by a large amount and right now.

Together We Can Beat the Deficit We did it in the 1990s

Bill Clinton fought tooth and nail against those changes and only gave in when Dick Morris told him it was not a winning position, then he pretended to be the leader of the changes.

We? Where did she get that we stuff?

The Republican Congress drug Clinton and the Democrats in Congress along kicking and screaming to obtain the balanced budget we had for a couple of years.

Then the Democrats brayed about how their ass had balanced the budget. Only then, they referred to it as a surplus. A surplus!

We were $5.9 trillion in debt, but they kept saying he had balanced the budget, and the Republicans had gone into the red again.

I’ve got a new rule. Democrats who blatantly lie, leave Congress for good.

Just wait until John McCain agrees with them, without challenging a word they said. That’s how that F’r kills us just about every time. He confirms their misrepresentations for them, helping to mislead the whole Democrat party’s supporters. He even suckers folks on our side.

Thanks everybody who supported him for return to Washington.

On 5.4 more years of his wonderful support for Conservatism. /s

Wow. Aren’t they the reasonable ones. As opposed to those eeeevil tea party-ites.

Yeah thats right. The deficit was reduced in the 90’s. Thats not because they worked together. Its because the Republicans won the majority of both houses and pushed the Dems aside. Against the wishes of the Dems they lowered the capital gains rate, restrained spending in general and enacted welfare reform. And it helped the economy. Had it been left up to Bill and the Dems we would have had deficits as far as the eye can see. And a less vibrant economy.
