(Reuters) - Turkey sent warplanes to attack Kurdish targets in northern Iraq on Wednesday, military sources said, hours after a rebel attack in southeast Turkey killed a dozen soldiers.

The planes took off from a base in the southeastern city of Diyarbakir and struck targets in the mountainous Kandil and Zap areas of Iraq where the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) operates a number of bases, the sources said.

They said the targets included anti-aircraft defenses and rebel shelters in the region.

The air raids came hours after reports of an attack by Kurdish guerrillas on a military convoy in southeastern Turkey.

Border Clashes Increase

Wireless to The New York Times

Berlin, Friday, Sept. 1--An increasing number of border incidents involving shooting and mutual Polish-German casualties are reported by the German press and radio. The most serious is reported from Gleiwitz, a German city on the line where the southwestern portion of Poland meets the Reich.

At 8 P.M., according to the semi-official news agency, a group of Polish insurrectionists forced an entrance into the Gleiwitz radio station, overpowering the watchmen and beating and generally mishandling the attendants. The Gleiwitz station was relaying a Breslau station's program, which was broken off by the Poles.

They proceeded to broadcast a prepared proclamation, partly in Polish and partly in German, announcing themselves as "the Polish Volunteer Corps of Upper Silesia speaking from the Polish station in Gleiwitz." The city, they alleged, was in Polish hands.

That’s the one, the SS left the bodies of Polish
criminals from concentration camps dressed in Polish
uniforms behind. Some of Reinhard Heydrich’s work.

I always find these reports of incursions suspect
at first after this.

The reporting is opaque to say the least, but it doesn't look like the Turks are denying it. Their war with the Kurds has not been a joking matter.

Hmm...Syria threatened, Iraq attacked. Turks are feeling their oats. I wonder why.

In a speech to the Chicago Council on Global Affairs last April(2008)(Obama) he said, “We have heard much over the last six years about how America’s larger purpose in the world is to promote the spread of freedom.” The anticipated twist never came. “I agree,” Obama told the crowd. Turns out we haven’t done enough to mold the world in America’s image: “America must lead by reaching out to all those living disconnected lives of despair in the world’s forgotten corners.”

Heckuva job, Obie.
