Obama's Jobs Package May Include School Renovations And A Tax Break For Hiring

The president's proposal would mean construction work and an incentive for businesses to add employees. It's expected to come with a plan to reduce federal budget deficits.

By Peter Nicholas, Christi Parsons and James Oliphant, Washington Bureau August 17, 2011

Reporting from Washington and Alpha, Ill.— The jobs package that President Obama plans to unveil shortly after Labor Day could include tens of billions of dollars to renovate thousands of dilapidated public schools and a tax break to encourage businesses to hire new workers, according to people familiar with White House deliberations.

As aides work to put together the proposal, they are also hammering out a companion plan to reduce federal budget deficits over the next decade, which Obama would share with the 12-member congressional "super committee" charged with finding long-term fixes for the growing national debt.

The deficit reduction plan would rely on some of the ideas Obama worked on in private negotiations with House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) this summer, aides said. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss a proposal that is still taking shape.

Same old bullsh*t, new song.

Make-work “jobs” for Unions, at 25% over the Union-set “prevailing” wage.

Massive new spending...

So, spend more on schools, and try to trick employers into hiring workers against their own best interests.... I’ll bet the tax breaks won’t cover the cost of Obamacare.

The good news is that Obama and the dims are desperate to shore up their base. That's the only possible explanation for a silly move like this as the election season is ramping up.

He knows the stupid middle is on to him and would otherwise be talking about small business tax breaks etc. in this political climate.

Nope, Obama is in VERY serious trouble and everyone on the left knows it. He no longer inspires passion or commitment in his own fold.

This is a slow motion train wreck of Carteresue proportions.

Things are bad indeed when you have to bribe businesses to hire.

OOOOOH I get a tax break for hiring some schlub for the first year. What about the second year? Fat chance. I will get my ass taxed off for violating some new obamacare rule or some such rule that baraq made up yesterday.

NO THANKS. Won’t hire until there is some stability and predictability in this country. Can’t plan until then.

fubo fubo fubo. leave our country.

I am a civil engineer, and I have done renovation work like this. This being August...the beginning of the school year...an architect would be hard pressed to program and design a building, and get the plans approved by June...if he started TODAY. Why is June important? Its best to do demo when school is out. So, none of this would happen in 2012. At best, it will occur in June 2013...what a coinquidink....right in front of the election. He is hoping to reap the short term job gain, before the long term debt hangover from it sinks in.

let school renovations be handled by the districts that pay the bills for the schools Zero. Stay the f%#k away from our schools.

Don’t offer me a tax credit to hire someone. It’s a one time deal like the 3000 dollar one you dangled a year or so ago. I won’t hire ANYONE until I have a reason to. Products are not selling, there for, no additional help is needed at any price (if you want to pay someone full boat to work for me I’ll still turn you down)

So what do you think about this passage in the article:

“Supporters estimate that each $1 billion in school construction work would generate up to 10,000 jobs. A $50-billion program, for example, would underwrite half a million jobs by that calculation.”

This just shows how little Obama understands business. Short term tax breaks for new hiring don’t mean that the business can operate profitably. Businesses facing new taxes, the costs of Obamacare and an avalanche of new costly regulations may not be able to make the business expansion needed to make these new jobs possible.

Obama has proposed this exact same “tax break” again and again. He apparently has no idea that employers don’t hire someone based on some one time government incentive. They hire when they NEED someone to perform a task that they cannot or will not do themselves. And lately most employers have all the employees they need.

First of all, I don’t think it will ‘create’ any jobs....just prevenmt more layoffs from happening. It really depends on how you look at it. First of all, the max length of any one project would usually be 18 months...so there is no permanence with these jobs. On a job site, I estimate I see around 4 people per million spent, so that would be 4,000 per billion. Throw in people who make and supply materials, maybe it doubles to 8,000. But (I’m doing math in my head, but I think I’m accurate), even at 10,000 jobs per billion, that is still 100k dollars per job. That same billion could instantly go in the economy, with a tax reduction, likely stimulating the economy much more effectively, and certainly more quickly....thus increasing GDP...and not really ‘costing’ anywhere close to a billion. Its obviously a better choice.

Yes, but you forgot to add material suppliers (concrete; flooring, painting; glass; whiteboards; furniture; office equipment); administrative, road paving, sign installation, hauling, and transportation, and playground jobs.

If a tax break is good for hiring workers, then a tax break would be even better for retaining workers.

Tax breaks for everyone!

Thanks for admitting that taxes harm the economy, 0bummer.

The one great unmentioned issue with tax breaks is — they ALL end. Once they end the individual states/communities are left on the hook supporting what ever program the tax breaks supported.

See what happened in the 1990’s with Clinton's 100,000 new police officers. The grants, aka tax breaks, ran out in a few years and the states and municipalities ended up firing the new police officers because they couldn't support them.

What will work is tax code changes that are permanent, or at least as permanent as any tax reductions can be. With he promise of some long term stability businesses will start hiring. A tax break that runs out in a year or three isn't any kind of longer stability.

Obama and reduction in taxes - now those two phrases don't belong on the same page much less the same sentence.

OK, how about some ideas for the Obama jobs plan:

1) Obama will hire a court jester. Jay Carney will feel threatened.

2) Hire people to raise hamsters to propel the next generation of green cars by GM.

3) Let’s redo the census. That employed a lot of people for a while.

4) Obama will hire a double to do the bus tour so that he can get back to the golf course.

School renovations in Illinois are only done by a few select companies, who then farm out the work.

It is a masterpiece of overcharges.

Only the politically connected could ever hope to get such contracts.

As a non-union shop, we once bid on several of them in our district and in the Chicago district. We came no where close to being considered. The first hoop was proving you paid a “living wage”. Our guys made about 5$ more per hour than their union counterparts, and had a matching 401k. Because we did not offer a pension, we were dropped from the bid process. There was no appeal process.

Even if we did offer a pension, we did not have a “shadow” minority business owner. You will not qualify for such contracts in this state if you are not minority owned (woman do not count any more). Trust me when I say that none of these companies are genuinely minority owned. Jesse Jackson Jr. sits on the board of several of the large contractors here in the area, but in name only. I am not willing to be shaken down by some minority poverty pimp for 20% of the take, just so I can have him listed as a part owner.

But, it wouldn’t matter anyways, our state owes so many contractors money (ourselves included), your chances of even getting paid are slim to none once the work is completed, unless of course you hire a connected law firm (note DEM law firm) to collect what they owe you, which is another washing of the money to the D party.

Contracts to Illinois are just another pay off to the D party. Nothing more, and folks are starting to catch on to it.

And when the renovations are complete, what happens? Workers are unemployed AGAIN. Just what he needs, a spike upward in unemployment in October 2012.

And what about the renovated buildings? Will they be put to use or allowed to deteriorate - AGAIN? Sounds like all this is accomplishing is massive spending followed by tremendous fiscal pressures on local school boards, trying to cope with the renovated schools. Net effect - school taxes go up and we pay twice.

Par for the course with the Child Molester Party (CMP).
