Why is the media ignoring Ron Paul?
The Week.com ^ | 8/16/2011

The libertarian presidential candidate nearly beat Michele Bachmann in the Iowa straw poll, but the press barely saw fit to mention it

In Saturday's Iowa straw poll, libertarian GOP candidate Ron Paul nearly emerged victorious, coming within less than one percentage point of the winner, Michele Bachmann. Of course, you'd hardly know it given the media's reporting, which focused on Bachmann's rise and Tim Pawlenty's disappointing third-place finish. The Daily Show even devoted a segment to the near press black-out on Monday night, with Jon Stewart asking "How did libertarian Ron Paul become the 13th floor in a hotel?"

Paul is overlooked by the media because he does not meet narrative of a slick good looking politician with good or at least amusing sound-bites. And he damn good on many fiscal issues, but he is a bit of a nut.

“Why would anybody take Ron Paul seriously?”

Can you name another candidate that is more serious than Ron Paul on cutting federal spending?

The one time that Israel wanted to take out Iran’s nuke capability, they were denied fly over rights over Iraq by the US and that was four or five years ago. The US has not and will not have the will to take out those nukes.

Can you name another candidate that is more serious than Ron Paul on cutting federal spending?

He's all for cutting federal spending unless it involves his district.

Some of the very important Federal spending needed according to Dr Paul.

Here is a list of some of the pork that Paul has applied for. 1. $25,000 for the Brazoria County Sheriff to establish a “Children’s Identification and Location Database.” 2. $8 million for the marketing of wild American shrimp. 3. $2.3 million for shrimp fishing research. 4. $3 million to “secure the acquisition of the McGinnes tract, protecting its critical natural resources and helping consolidate refuge inholdings.” 5. $5 million to expand the cancer center at Brazosport Hospital. 6. $200,000 for the Matagorda Episcopal Health Outreach Program to fund a “National Health Service Corp Scholar.” 7. $4.5 million to study the effects of the health risks of vanadium. 8. $3 million to test imported shrimp for antibiotics. (Does anyone think there is a big shrimp industry in Paul’s district?) 9. $10 million to repair the Galveston railways causeway bridge. 10. $1.18 million for “Personalized Medicine in Asthma” 11. $100,000 for a “data-driven automated system for nursing students on the Texas Gulf Coast.” 12. $257,000 to “prepare graduates from the doctoral program at the University of Texas Medical Branch School of Nursing to assume faculty roles in schools for nursing with a deficient number of doctoral level faculty.” 13. $1.4 million to buy buses for the Golden Crescent Regional Commission. 14. $2 million to buy buses for Galveston. 15. $5 million for highway spending. 16. $2 million to replace facilities for Galveston bus service. 17. $3 million to replace facilities for the Golden Crescent Regional bus facility. 18. $2 million to repair the Galveston trolley. 19. $2.14 million to renovate the Edna Theater. 20. $13 million for I-69 highway project. 21. $30 million the Texas Maritime Academy to refurbish a ship. 22. $4.5 million to maintain Cedar Bayou. Plus another $9 million 23. $15 million for “construction at GIWW Matagorda Bay.” Plus another $5.8 million 24. $100,000 to maintain Chocolate Bayou. 25. $2.5 million to maintain Double Bayou.

Why does the media ignore Ron Paul? Let me count the ways..

He is too old to be elected as president?

He is a libertarian running as a republican?

His Trutherism is kookie?

He thinks Iran shoud be allowed to have nukes?

I could go on, but it is late. In all fairness, I do agree with some of his fiscal opinions.

The msm wants Perry or Romney to win.

Ron Paul is their last choice.

Ron Paul wants to abolish the Federal Reserve, and he’s serious about it.

The Globalists are 100% in favor of the Federal Reserve.

Perry is the NWO candidate, and Paul challenges that.

This is how the media controls our electoral process. They select our candidates for us by giving the ones they want nominated the most coverage. Then they use positive or negative coverage on the final nominees to sway voters in the direction they want.

In the last election the media singled out the weakest candidate (McCain) and gave him the most coverage until he was nominated, then they picked the guy they wanted to win and gave him more positive coverage then the opponent.

Right now, the weakest candidate and least likely to be able to put up a real fight against Obama is Romney and guess who is getting the most media attention?

The media knows that Romney care and his ecomnomic record in Massachusetts will make it hard for conservatives to rally support because the guy is just another Obama with an R next to his name.

We need a strong candidate that will force media attention.

No. But I can name at least eight other candidates who are more serious about winning the nomination and being President.

Paul is a gadfly. He's not a serious candidate. He just wants to piss in the soup and get everybody agitated -- and talking about him.

That's "winning" to him.

Ron Paul is pretty savvy on fiscal matters. He has won straw polls all over the place for years, because the young college students like his ideas of legalizing drugs and they pack the venues where he shows up to speak. ...Thinking adults realize his ideas regarding isolation and defense of the USA are just plain idiotic.

It must be difficult for his son to witness, as Rand seems to be pretty level headed and a Conservative.

Iraq's current government isn't ready to stand up to Iran yet and are playing nice with them at the moment. Scumbags like Mookie al Sadr are driving this (mostly with nasty threats and bombings.)

There's another election in 2013 and if someone like Allawi can get in (his party came very close last time), there's a good chance they'd allow the U.S to access the airspace. Of course, this would also depend on our leadership.

I doubt Iraq would ever give Israel any permission, though.

There's a whole lot of non-defense pork, things like skate-board parks and bike trails, that gets slipped into those defense bills. Of course, if Congress ever gets to cutting, those will be the *last* items to go.

He’s a novelty candidate.

He is the default choice of someone who dislikes the government, but pays utterly no attention to geopolitical issues or our system of government. Don’t get me wrong, Ron Paul has several conservative issues on the money. He can’t seem to grasp the concept that Israel is the beacon in the Middle East, not the enemy.

I like how the article says, "The Daily Show even devoted a segment to the near press black-out".

Are we supposed to be impressed because Jon Stewart's The Daily Show devoted a segment? I realize a large number of young Americans tune in to Comedy Central for their 'news' but I fail to see why those of us who are not under the influence should give a rat's behind what Jon Stewart has to say. Incredible.

I hate too say this, but the US is already involved in the global community.

It won’t change. We are already too intermingled to change at this point. Case in point...look at the stock market. Europe or Asia goes down..so do we. And vice-versa.

Far to late to become isolationist.

I have a question..these Bilderburger folks. If they are so “secret” why do we know where their meetings are and who is attending?

The last time Ron Paul ran as an Independent he got the nomination resulting in a whopping 0.5% of the popular vote and 0 electoral votes. I remember that election well and Paul got media attention commensurate with the number of votes he received -- kinda like now.
