A four-year-old girl has been mauled to death inside her suburban Melbourne home by a neighbour’s escaped pitbull-mastiff cross, renewing calls for the aggressive breed of dog to be banned.
Police Superintendent Graham Kent said the dog ran into the home, where Sudanese refugee Ayen Chol was watching TV with other children yesterday evening, and attacked.
A five-year-old girl and a 30-year-old woman were also injured. Chol died at the scene.
Chol’s cousin Daniel Atem said the injured woman was outside the house when the dog chased her inside.
Atem said the dog then attacked the five-year-old. As Chol’s mother intervened it turned on Chol, who was clinging to her mother’s leg.
He said: 'It pulled the child from the mum... the daughter died. The dog left the child and then the owner of the dog came after that and took the dog out.'
Police says the dog will be destroyed and charges are being considered against its owner.
Family members described horrific scenes inside the home during the attack, with Ayen being shaken like a rag doll as one family member tried to beat the dog away with a table, local reports said.
The 30-year-old woman suffered puncture marks to her arms, while the five-year-old suffered bite wounds to the face.
Both were taken to hospital, where they remain in a stable condition.
The dead girl's father is working in southern Sudan but had been contacted and was returning home.
Mr Atem said: 'He's very, very, very sad. The elders community in southern Sudan will counsel him.'
The family migrated to Australia in 2004 for a better life.

I am not saying the dog owner is not responsible. The whole story seems strange. If the little girl were running down the street it would be more plausible, but a dog breaking into a house full of people to attack? Something isn’t right. We are not getting the whole story and that begs the question WHY aren’t we getting the whole story?

I’ve yet to meet a dog who could magically teleport itself at will, so I think we can safely rule that option out.
Not necessarily. Dogs have a sense of smell thousands of times more sensitive than a human being and a sense of hearing that is greater in the high pitch than a human. They can find you if they need to do so.
There have been stories of pits chewing through doors or going through glass doors and still go into attack mode.

When is enough enough? How many more children need to be maimed or mauled to death because of the behaviors of these dogs and the lack of responsibility of the owners? This world has to STOP and return to civility once again. This has gone beyond and needs to be taken care of. Just look at this child. A baby!!! Now she is dead because of a dog who wasn’t secured properly. God help us all.

Shocked... shocked I tell you. So a month or so ago, one ate a newborn, a week or so one killed a pregnant woman, now another one. I wonder about how many have happened in other countries and we didn’t hear about it. These dogs should be banned. End of story. Irresponsible breeding has turned them into unpredictable beasts.

When I was young, our poodle got loose. He went thru the front door of another house as a guy was entering, where a guy was having a semi-formal party - everyone in suits. Our idiot poodle and the neighbor’s dog than had a fight in the middle of the party, with blood flying everywhere - and they were 25 lb poodles!
In this case, it could be as simple as the loose dog hearing a kid squeal with pleasure, and instinctively feeling that there was a wounded animal inside.
Not everyone sits around with their front door closed. When I was young, we used to have just a flimsy screen door in the front when the weather was good. The wood door was for night and bad weather.
And it wasn’t even all that long ago either.

You know, you do remind me of footage I saw. I think it was a pair of Animal Control officers who called on a lady with a prolematic pit bull. The lady sicced the dog on them. The dog fastened on the lady Animal Control offiver, I think on her breast. The other one beat the dog with what looked like an iron pipe, again and again and again — and only after a number of blows did it let go.
Horrible.

The rots were the target in the mid-90s. I’m wondering if the hype makes certain dogs more desirable to certain personalities. I mean, if you are a bad ass, gang bangin’ thug, what kind of dog are you going to get these days? Idiot owns a dog...dog “acts” like an idiot..
I am leery of pit bulls myself but not because of the dogs themselves but because of the people who often own them. Banning a particular breed of dog won’t stop people from breeding aggressive fighting dogs. If all the pit bulls were eleminated they would find aggressive poodles that were willing to fight and in a few canine generations we would be hearing about vicious poodle attacks.
