Girl, four, mauled to death as she watched TV by neighbour's escaped pitbull

A four-year-old girl has been mauled to death inside her suburban Melbourne home by a neighbour’s escaped pitbull-mastiff cross, renewing calls for the aggressive breed of dog to be banned.

Police Superintendent Graham Kent said the dog ran into the home, where Sudanese refugee Ayen Chol was watching TV with other children yesterday evening, and attacked.

A five-year-old girl and a 30-year-old woman were also injured. Chol died at the scene.

Chol’s cousin Daniel Atem said the injured woman was outside the house when the dog chased her inside.

Atem said the dog then attacked the five-year-old. As Chol’s mother intervened it turned on Chol, who was clinging to her mother’s leg.

He said: 'It pulled the child from the mum... the daughter died. The dog left the child and then the owner of the dog came after that and took the dog out.'

Police says the dog will be destroyed and charges are being considered against its owner.

Family members described horrific scenes inside the home during the attack, with Ayen being shaken like a rag doll as one family member tried to beat the dog away with a table, local reports said.

The 30-year-old woman suffered puncture marks to her arms, while the five-year-old suffered bite wounds to the face.

Both were taken to hospital, where they remain in a stable condition.

The dead girl's father is working in southern Sudan but had been contacted and was returning home.

Mr Atem said: 'He's very, very, very sad. The elders community in southern Sudan will counsel him.'

The family migrated to Australia in 2004 for a better life.

From the article...

Chol’s cousin Daniel Atem said the injured woman was outside the house when the dog chased her inside.

am not saying the dog owner is not responsible. The whole story seems strange. If the little girl were running down the street it would be more plausible, but a dog breaking into a house full of people to attack? Something isn’t right.

The dog began its attack on a woman outside (which woman, I do not know), the woman opened the door in an attempt to escape. Very poor reporting in the article.

Solution: Just don’t watch TV with a Pit Bull/Mastiff mix.

You said: "...but a dog breaking into a house full of people to attack? Something isn’t right."

The story said: "Chol’s cousin Daniel Atem said the injured woman was outside the house when the dog chased her inside."

It sounds like the woman was attacked outside and attempted to escape the attack by running inside.

I actually pictured the little girl sitting next to the dog, watching TV...Temple Grandin calls it “thinking in pictures.”

...not because of the dogs themselves but because of the people who often own them.

You're right. they are favored by the cap-backwards knee pants-hanging-off-ass, gang banger types.

Amen! Another sterling example of very sloppy writing...

Recently there was a pregnant woman in Pacifica, Calfiornia that was killed by her Pit Bull. Seems she was a member of a group that is trying to change the public perception of Pit Bulls as being vicious animals.

A pitbull. What an amazing coincidence.

Yes normally one reads of children being maimed or killed by golden retrievers. Innocent pit bulls are such darling warling precious wecious puppie wuppiekins* that they'd never bite a child.

*I actually heard a dog owner call her obnoxious animal this.

That’s got to be some compelling T.V.

All TV programs are that captivating when you are four years old :-)

I watch TV with an American bulldog/mastiff mix.

This big moron and a little moron were sitting on a bridge.

One fell off, the other did not.

Which one?

“I’ll bite.” said the bulldog

The one that was a little more on.

“What about the big moron?” asked the bulldog

He was needed to start threads like this one.

“The rots were the target in the mid-90s. I’m wondering if the hype makes certain dogs more desirable to certain personalities. I mean, if you are a bad ass, gang bangin’ thug, what kind of dog are you going to get these days? Idiot owns a dog...dog “acts” like an idiot..”

Exactly...certain people in certain neighborhoods around here use these dogs to intimidate and frighten others, either to keep them quite or just to be jerks. So the city decides it will impose an extra fee on these people...yeah that should take care of it!

If she was still alive she could rethink her position.

Said it before, will say it again.

All pitbulls must be eliminated. If that doesn’t work we can move on from there.

People who own pit bulls have them in order to intimidate their neighbors or potential thieves.

If this were up to me, I would charge the owner with negligent homicide.

The dog was loose due to the owners negligence.

I have one of these animals down the street from me , a few weeks back it ran me into my house.

I called animal control and they gave the owner a written warning. The next time if I can get to my gun in time, I will solve the problem.

BULLSHIT the dog escaped from its owner & went into a neighbors house & killed a child all under its own power. Guns don’t/can’t do that .
The animal in question needs to be destroyed immediately & the owner needs to do decades in prison at hard labor .
Dogs are supposed to be companions not self propelled free roaming ANTI-PERSONAL MINES!!!
