UPDATE: Here is Gene Wangs story from on the ground in China. One excerpt:
What began as a goodwill trip to China for the Georgetown mens basketball team turned violent Thursday night, when its exhibition game against the Bayi Rockets deteriorated into a melee during which players exchanged blows, chairs were thrown and spectators tossed full water bottles as Hoyas players and coaches headed to the locker room at Olympic Sports Center Stadium.

We should have sent Catholic school boys over instead... Oh, that’s right. Georgetown University is a Catholic school.
Guess the Big East will keep its reputation as not exactly a finesse basketball league.
those kids were fast as rightring.
I do wonder who thought it was a great idea to send a bunch of inner-city youths to China on a “goodwill tour”? I understand the Chinese team is part of their army too. Just a really questionable idea.
I think it’s pretty clear from the article, that the Chinese team were coached to not back down from the more aggressive Americans. The Americans in turn, didn’t back down either.
Kind of like when the NHL allstars toured Russia many years ago and kicked their butts.
I thought all Asians knew martial arts.
LOL! What’s the one guy doing bringing the ball to the fight?
Keepin’ it Leal?
Who knew that ghettofabulous was an export...
That’s the “pick-and-egg-roll” play...
Georgetown players are thugs on and off the court
The Attorney General will mount a vigorous investigation into what is clearly a hate-crime against his people.
“Oh, thats right. Georgetown University is a Catholic school.”
No. Not for a long time.
Based on a Bulletin Board post from a Georgetown fan at the game, the violence seems to have been started by the Chinese.
Nah, that was a flash mob training session.
Nah! Georgetown University is a catholic college that happens to sponsor a professional basketball program for underprivileged youts!
This is a direct diplomatic poke in the eye. Sports is politics and the communists in china KNOW that they are going to be the alpha dog in Asia. They wanted everybody , including their people to see how they fought the Americans and made them leave losing face.
Think about the culture there. A guest is usually treated with respect because it reflects honor on you. A “dog” is treated like they treated our team. Hahahahahahaha. Do you think the government didn’t authorize this? If this wasn’t condoned by the Chinese government, the coaches and players would be enroute to reeducation camps. The police at the scene would have cracked some skulls of the crowd for the water bottles and chair throwing.
I look at the horizon and I see war. They have too many males, rural populations by the MILLIONS poring into cities built on an economic bubble. Once we are unable to buy chinese goods, inflate our money so they are left holding worthless paper, and their economy collapses watch out Taiwan and Korea. What are we going to do with armies of limp wristed lovers and pregnant undeployable women?
