Had King Electrical Services owner John King been shot by, say, a Tea Partyer, there'd be no end to the public pontificating from Washington's politicians and media commentators about their rhetoric or protests inciting violence.
It's quite a different story for the Lambertville, Mich., contractor who woke up in the dead of night a week ago found a silhouetted figure on his driveway spraying "SCAB" on the side of his vehicle. The figure fired a gun at him before fleeing.

My first run-in with a Union goon
A worker was on our office floor one day was trying to maneuver a 4x8 foot display board around a tight corner, and I could see he was having a very difficult time. So I got up out of my desk and said, here let me help you and lifted a corner and swung the tail end around for him. All of a sudden, I hear Hey! Hey! Hey! What the hell do you think you are doing? turning around I see a Shop Steward red-faced and firing more angry words at me, for daring to lay my non-union hands on a job they do. If he would have seen me spray painting his car, I dont think he would have been any more angry. It was a real eye-opener. Here I am trying to help a fellow human being, and I get yelled out in front the whole office floor over it by some union goon.
Im distressed by the fact that the emerging narrative on unions, (even among conservatives, and this is horrifying for what it means for the future of the country) seems to run like this,
Public sector unions are REALLY bad. There are some bad things in private sector unions, too, but they arent pure evil like public sector unions. Private sector unions, especially at the turn of the century, were actually pretty good.
This is pure BS! It is very, very, very scary when, even here on FR for Petes sake, people do not recognize the following two things:
Unions can ONLY!!!! exist because of government force applied selectively against private property owners (evil rich people),
ALL UNIONS REPRESENT GOVERNMENT SANCTIONED THEFT OF PRIVATE PROPERTY FOR THE PURPOSE OF BUYING DEMOCRAT VOTES.
I expect ignorance of this fact elsewhere, but here on FR??????????????????????
Heres how the purely evil, anti-American, communistic, welfare-begging private sector unions work ..
I set up a business, using MY PRIVATE PROPERTY (my capital and/or cash money).
I pay for the space, using MY PRIVATE PROPERTY.
I pay the taxes using MY PRIVATE PROPERTY.
I supply the parts and inventory, using MY PRIVATE PROPERTY.
I pay for the insurance, using MY PRIVATE PROPERTY.
I pay the labor, using MY PRIVATE PROPERTY.
I recruit, hire, and advertise, using MY PRIVATE PROPERTY.
Oftentimes an entire lifes savings (MY PRIVATE PROPERTY) is at stake.
My future, my standing in the community, my credit, and MY PRIVATE PROPERTY are all at stake.
If I fail, I stand a good chance of being economically crippled for life.
One day, on MY PRIVATE PROPERTY that I own and acquired using MY PRIVATE PROPERTY, one of my employees, who is only in my presence because of the risk of MY PRIVATE PROPERTY, comes to me and says, Heres the story, Bub. From this moment forward I am going to begin organizing YOUR OTHER EMPLOYEES, to work AGAINST YOUR PRIVATE INTERESTS and do everything in our power to TAKE BY FORCE AS MUCH OF YOUR PRIVATE PROPERTY AS WE CAN GET OUR HANDS ON. We are going to spend a great deal of time and effort ORGANIZING AGAINST YOUR INTERESTS TO DO EVERYTHING IN OUR POWER TO GROW STRONGER AT YOUR EXPENSE, IN ORDER TO TAKE YOUR MONEY. You might as well have your business competitors working here on the shop floor. If you do not agree to our demands, we will go on strike, make your life miserable, harass and threaten and/or MURDER IN COLD BLOOD anybody you may want to hire in our place.
Now the one and ONLY way that such a thing could EVER take place is for the government to step in and say, Mr. Employer (rich, white, capitalist, male), if you fire this union man, you are going to jail.
Plainly and simply, no union could ever exist in a free society. Yes, in a free society, you should be able to form and join a union of any type at any time for any purpose whatsoever. AND YOUR EMPLOYER SHOULD BE ABLE TO FIRE YOUR HAPPY ASS IN A HEARTBEAT FOR DOING SO.
FREEDOM IS A TWO WAY STREET.
I find this ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. Truly. A man strolls onto the PRIVATE PROPERTY of another man and tells him how he will employ his PRIVATE PROPERTY going forward, OR ELSE!, and hundreds of millions, if not billions, of people the world over think that the first man is not only somehow better than sub-human filth, they actually see him as a hero! To me, this is one of the most perverse and mystifying examples of twisted human thinking the world has ever seen. I cant say it enough; you come onto my PRIVATE PROPERTY, and bargain with me, using the THREAT OF GOVERNMENT SANCTIONED FORCE, about how much of my PRIVATE PROPERTY you will allow me to keep! And this is somehow acceptable?
As I say, even conservatives, (who have escaped the liberal brainwashing that begins when we are still in the womb on guns, race, US history, etc., etc., and do not subscribe to the easy notions that are so readily picked up by the unthinking) seem to fall for this trap. Seem to believe that
The work place is filled with mean managers and mean bosses who were/are really mean to kids and women and workers and paid them pennies instead of the legitimate millions that they were REALLY worth, making evil white male capitalists even richer, and they enslaved them and coerced them and made them work real hard and were really, really mean. THANK GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! for the government stepping in and saving women and children from mean bosses and really mean white capitalist men.
Needless to say, each and every single word of that narrative is as totally false and ridiculous as the liberal narrative on US history, or bad guns, or evil white men. If you know people who believe that stuff, you cannot help them. DO NOT waste your breath on them, DO NOT do their research for them; have them read Sowell or Williams or von Hayek, or von Mises, or Friedman, or even Stossel when they write of sweatshops either in todays 3rd world or in America at the turn of the century.
My first day at my current employer I had a grievence filed against me for carrying a box of personnel items to my new desk. Fast forward 14 years and I just had another one filed against me for moving carepackage donations (for our combat service members) to the collection point.
The union can KMA!

Govt and unions both extortionists par excellence
I met a guy who once had been the Police Chief of a small town in Michigan. He told me that he gave it up when he realized that he was spending almost no time on police work, but hours and hours and hours per week dealing with union grievances from his officers.
The union can KMA!
We just used to do that stuff after 5 pm. No union guys around to watch at that time...:^)
I could probably even do that stuff without an issue any time after 3 pm!
My dad was a union goon for the Laborers union. I have heard some amazing stories of what these guys are capable of.
The “Union” is really a government-endorsed monopoly on labor.
They’re are really only a sub-contractor - with that government monopoly (and no morals or ethics in too many cases) - which the business is forced to hire to do some parts of certain jobs. The UNION then hires (and assigns and trains and selects and promotes) their (government-restricted-by-monopoly) members to do the parts of the job that the union wants to do.
Union members are NOT hired by the company. Since they are only “allowed to work” ONLY after getting permission (to work at that company) from THEIR UNION -—> The workers are working FOR their UNION.
They have no reason to have any loyalty, any respect, any concern for the welfare of “their” company - and, by extension - ANY COMPANY. The constant union propaganda, in fact, voids and trains and indoctrinates its members to hate and fight the companies where their union is employed.
Try working in Manhattan with the unions. I was delivering some material sorely needed for a job downtown in my car. A new electrician was sweeping the dirt and was asked to unload my car so the project could continue. After unloading he complained to the Forman. The Forman apologized and said I would have to take all the stuff back. I let him load it all back while I explained to the Forman that it could be weeks before I could get a teamster to truck it down and I hope he didnt need the material to avoid a layoff. He then explained it to the new guy and had him unload it a second time.
WOW ! That is by far the best explanation of Unions that I’ve ever seen. Thank you for posting....
And that is the nicest kudos I’ve ever received here. Thank you. Wait until I debunk the “unions were needed in 1900” myth, which I refer to in my earlier post, but do not go into.... It’ll be GREAT!
Good work Dr. 2B. Private sector unions are as anti-freedom as public sector groups. They are not VOLUNTARY associations, they are COMPULSORY. They are protectionist, and block free entry and free trade by more able or productive entrants, a.k.a., competing workers. This denies both the firm owner AND the consumer the economic right to freely trade with the person they’d like.
The “right” to collectively bargain is not a “right.”
Taking away or blocking other people’s rights isn’t “a right.” It is a VIOLATION of basic rights.
I always ask the union members at the college where I teach economics: “Why do I need to get the “approval” of a majority of my fellow employees, before I negotiate and sign my OWN contract? I am a free person, I decide when I am ‘exploited,’ NO ONE ELSE. ‘Collective bargaining’ isn’t just, moral or orderly — it’s tyranny of a majority of individual rights.”
They always ask me, “Hey, why not simply participate in the union? Otherwise your voice won’t be heard!”
See how dumb these folks are? It isn’t a matter of getting the “perfect” collective bargaining agreement (CBA) that concerns me; I OPPOSE “COLLECTIVIST” BARGAINING, PERIOD!!!
Of course, if there is a workplace hazard, such as toxic substances that are harming people on the grounds, then THAT IS WHAT LAW SUITS ARE FOR. But really — do we NEED top-down, ‘central planning’ of each person’s salary, benefits, retirement, work hours, etc etc - equal pay, even for the most negligent and the most productive worker, and seniority based promotion, even if BETTER ENTRANTS are out there, to REPLACE THESE PROTECTED UNIONIZED FOOLS?
How is that honoring the peaceful RIGHTS of the customers — and the shop (capital) OWNER?
Unions protect themselves through legal force from peaceful free trade and continuous beneficial competition
In turn, they reduce and treat customers AND investing entrepreneurs as their SLAVES.
Let’s recap, shall we: Both Public AND PRIVATE COMPULSORY UNIONS:
1. Violate the economic freedoms of business people (capital owners, entrepreneurs)
2. Violate the economic freedoms of prospective new entrants (more able, skilled, friendly and productive competitors)
3.Violate the economic freedoms of consumers (who want good service at the most efficient cost or price — and when unions command a high, protected wage, they aren’t “exploited” — BUT NOW THE CUSTOMERS AND CAPITAL OWNERS ARE!!! So much for Economic Justice.)
Free trade is a human right, as much of a human right as choosing who you will take as your marriage partner. It is an intimately personal decision — the choice of whom to hire to babysit for your children, of whom to paint your family portrait, of whom you will pay to take care of your teeth, or treat your beloved pet dog. NO MAJORITY, NO OTHER PERSON, has the authority to “DECIDE” your economic trades. Only cowardly, collectivist, protectionist tyrants believe they “deserve” the power to violently take this right away from you.
The idea of Majority rule or ‘economic democracy’ (as the compulsory unionists like to call it) in the setting of work hours, individual salaries and terms of trade in markets is nothing more than majority-tyranny.
It has NO PLACE in a civil society of free people.
The most important thing in your post is the part about workplace hazards. I would have replaced “law suit” with “regulation” but we get the point. There are TWO ways to handle workplace safety...
ONE - create gov’t sanctioned unions that give BILLIONS OF DOLLARS to Obama and Franken every year, or ...
TWO - simply write a few regulations about fire exits, etc. I’m not crazy about regulation, of course, but TEN TRILLION regs (which put ZERO dollars in Obama’s pocket) are better than even ONE union.
The number of conservatives!!! (EVEN ON THIS FORUM) who say we need unions for workplace safety is simply mind boggling, and is indicative of how successful media brain washing is; if even some of us fall for it, the country is screwed.
