A Florida high school's "Teacher of the Year" was canned from the classroom for making homophobic remarks on Facebook, officials said.

Jerry Buell, a veteran social studies teacher at Mount Dora High School in Mount Dora, Fla., said on his Facebook page that he "almost threw up" when he read that New York legalized gay marriage last month, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

Buell also slammed the same-sex unions as a "cesspool" and called gay marriage "a sin," officials said.

He needs to lawyer up and make the School District give him a very nice retirement.

How does what a teacher says on his own time have any bearing on what he does in the classroom?

Can a teacher be fired for their religious beliefs? Especially those expressed off the school campus? Can a teacher be fired for going to church on Sunday? I too hope he lawyers-up big time and makes this a very expensive mistake for the school.

Exactly! It’s not a private business, it’s DEFINITELY controlled by the government, so “Congress shall make no law.....” is certainly in play here.

Screw the lawyers.

The good citizens of Mount Dora need to “flash mob” the next school board meeting.

He shouldn’t have to hide or disguise his speech when he is telling the truth.

Jerry Buell can look forward to nice retirement bonus — once he collects damages from the school district, a governmnental entity, for violation of his 1st Amd rights.

I see a BIG win for the former teacher.
I’ll bet he can provide posts from other teachers, administrators, etc. that express personal opinions that someonw, ANYONE, might find offensive.

To my knowlege, homosexuality isn’t a protected class (yet).
Have they amended the 1968 Civil Rights Act?

Lake County school officials suspended him for violating their newly-adopted social media policy that warns teachers to think before they post.

What exactly is the "newly adopted social media policy"? It consists of a warming not say anything against sex perverts? I hope he sues and wins. This is another piece of evidence that the homosexual agenda is all about the destruction of the freedoms of speech, religion and assoication.

Alright this is interesting. I just also received a new social media policy at my place of work here in NJ (private company). I would suspect that he had identified his work position on his FB webpage being that the new social policy I received stated that if you do such a thing then the company has the right to take action against you for what you post. (Not that I agree but I understand the line they are trying to draw, )

It was humorous that a few people at my company cracked jokes saying that the new policy was created due to me being that I am very politically vocal at my company.

I highly suspect that this new policy must be being originated by some left-wing group that companies are reacting to. I am sure that the majority that will be fired will be the result of left-wing complaints. I remember reading not too long back that there is a left-wing campaign to wipeout ‘homophobia’ from Facebook and other social media websites. This is a war.
