Bachmann in radio interview: Americans fear rise of "Soviet Union"

GOP presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann said today that Americans "fear the rise of the Soviet Union" during an appearance on a conservative radio talk show.

The Soviet Union broke up into 15 separate republics 20 years ago. Boris Yeltsin was the first freely elected leader of Russia, the largest of those republics.

"What people recognize is that there's a fear that the United States is in an unstoppable decline. They see the rise of China, the rise of India, the rise of the Soviet Union and our loss militarily going forward," Bachmann said on Jay Sekulow's radio show.

Bachmann, a Minnesota congresswoman, was trying to explain that Americans are concerned about issues beyond federal spending and the debt.

I’m saying there is something wrong with Michelle Bachmann. You can see it. She seems like she is on the verge of a breakdown. She should never have gotten in this race in the first place. She as not qualified. She believed the hype and her ego rose to the bait. It isn’t working. And she should quit. NOW. She doesn’t have the temperment to run a race like this. And I never thought she was all THAT right to begin with.

It could be possible for the Soviet Union to reform, but who in America is worried about that on a daily basis? Everyone I know is talking about China, and if you bring it up causally, everyone has an opinion. If you bring up the Soviet Union at work tomorrow, I doubt anyone will say they are rising again and taking over the world. Its just not part of the zeitgeist.

Pawlenty is probably Ice fishing out in the sticks somewhere on his 2nd case of PBR or Natty Ice by now and still can’t believe how she ruined his entire bid and something he’d spent 2+ years getting ready for.

This is unfortunate. But as long as she doesn’t start talking about Prussia and the Ottoman Empire, I think she’ll do OK.

OK, I guess I misread your post. I thought it was excusing her blunder because the devil made her do it. I agree, in general, with your assessment and would say it applies to all House members. I think it is the nature of the job. In the House, you can be more partisan and an ideologue, because you are representing a smaller and specifically grouped population. I think when you run a statewide race, you learn to develop a statesmen type approach. It doesnt mean you dont believe the same things, you just approach it differently, the way Reagan did.

A resurgent Soviet Union is a legit concern for anyone who appreciates the talents of Mr. Putin.

Big deal!

The Soviet Union existed until she was 35, so she may have been speaking out of force of habit.

And who cares if she gets the birth date of some pop star wrong? I’m more concerned about what she has about the economy and other far more important issues.

The USSR never broke up. You only think it did.

She’s on the money.

I'm not one for trusting the "zeitgeist". What leaders say and do is more significant. Germany (and of course the European Union) have an agreement with Russia that many characterize to be similar to the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact. Russia and China have been cooperating militarily for some years now, doing joint military exercises. Putin hasn't let go of his ambition to reverse what he sees as the "greatest geopolitical catastrophe" (which shows his attitude towards WWII, incidentally). A lot more than just China (whom, incidentally, we should have been far more aggressive with back during the Korean War, instead of walking away).

I agree.

After the straw poll win a wise Freeper, whose name I sadly cannot remember, predicted that Michele would go on too many interviews and open herself to gaffes and criticism.

I like the lady, but she maybe more effective in Congress than she would be else where.

Thats all well and good, but her statement was that Americans are worried about it. In that context, the zeitgeist was the vehicle she was using. And I just dont see Americans thinking about the Soviets right now. Maybe 1 or 2 people researching it and a few conspiracy nuts, but not a large portion of the American people.

Its not a big gaffe, but it is another in a long line, which is the troubling aspect.

That poor Mrs. Bachmann! She’s such a motormouth—her brain just can’t keep up with her lips.

Are you in fear of the rise of the Soviet Union? Does that keep you up nights?

Really?

“Palin is running a guerrilla campaign to become President”

She’s not doing any such thing except in the fervent imaginations of her zealous supporters. Until she gets in, she’s not IN.

No sane person can deny that the most consistent two campaigns of the 2012 cycle are Mitt Romney’s and Governor Palin’s.

Palins history making feat is that she is doing it without money, and without staff and handlers, and it is brilliant.

Palin continues to maintain her spot in the daily primary coverage and news, if you keep up with the variety of new sources here at FR you can see that her status within the race is as a frontrunner.

Really?? “She’s on the money.”?? REALLY??? Aye Carumba....

Look... she’s a nice lady. And she’s also not ready for this. Which she appears to be going out of her way to prove.

Doing WHAT exactly? Has she announced? No. Will she? Maybe. At some point you gotta do yer business or get off the pot.

Oh.....God. There’s zealous support and then there’s crazy-town. You might want to check the GPS and make sure that you aren’t in the latter.
