Russia Pushes To Claim Arctic As Its Own
NPR ^ | August 16, 2011 | David Greene

Posted on 08/18/2011 10:12:57 PM PDT by americanophile

Four years ago, Russian researchers made a bold, if unseen, move. From a submarine, deep beneath the icy waters of the North Pole, they planted a Russian flag on the ocean floor.

Russia has the world's longest Arctic border, which stretches more than 10,000 miles. And for Russia, that 2007 research mission was only the beginning of a major drive to claim ownership of vast portions of the Arctic, as well as the oil and gas deposits that are beneath.

At present, Russia has some islands in the Arctic Ocean. But aside from that, the country's northern border effectively ends where the Arctic Ocean begins.

Yet the Russian government is now making the argument that its border should be extended northward. The government says that hidden under the Arctic's icy waters is a mountain range, the Lomonosov Ridge, which goes all the way to the North Pole. They say this shows that Russia continues north below sea level, and the country has scientists in the Arctic Ocean now, collecting evidence for the claim.

On a recent visit, a speedboat raced up the Pechora River in one small part of the vast region. The river cuts through hundreds of miles of empty green and sandy tundra and empties into the Arctic Ocean.

Posturing over the arctic is nothing new (even the Canadians do it).

“Russia continues north below sea level”. LOL.

The Ruskies recognize a weak POTUS when they see one.

Now is the time to strike, while our leader bows and kowtows to every regime on the planet.

If I was them I would take all the territory I could until a real man or woman takes the helm of the USA.

They did it with carter, they’ll do it with barry the zero.

I can understand the sentiment, but we can’t allow expanionist regimes to start gobbling up the ocean floor unchallenged. No country owns the oceans and just as with airspace, the ocean above your territory will likewise be controlled.

Well, this is a matter of concern that has been going on before Obama came into office. And, by the way, the Law of Sea is a rather difficult and obscure subject matter for most people to understand.

Agreed 100 percent. What happened to all countries agreeing that nobody would stake a claim up there? The UN will pander to any tyrant.

"From a submarine, deep beneath the icy waters of the North Pole"

Movie: "The Land That Time Forgot"

"Negotiating an underwater tunnel [beneath the ice] to gain the island's interior, those aboard U-33 are amazed to discover a tropical prehistoric world kept warm by volcanic forces. Here dinosaurs that should be long extinct live and roam, as do a curious race of humanoid savages that appear to exhibit all the various phases of Man's evolutionary development. To survive long enough to repair and replenish the U-boat, wartime enemies must put aside their differences and cooperate with one another. But not everyone is playing from the Kumbaya songbook...

The Land That Time Forgot is a thoroughly old fashioned sci-fi/fantasy adventure of the type they weren't really making anymore even in 1975. A lot of this has to do with the script sticking to Burroughs' Victorian style. (His Caprona tales were first published in 1918; as late as World War II he'd still be cranking out novels in the writing style of the 19th Century.) The film's a throwback to the likes of the original King Kong and potboilers such as Unknown Island (1948) and The Land Unknown (1957), only in color."

Well, if the Russians want it, now`s the time to take it. An enfeebled, 0bama-ruled America can`t and won`t stop them. Oh, we might weakly whine in protest to the UN and send a mildly worded memo of concern, but we won`t contest it beyond that.

Our enemies know their time to act is now.

The Ruskies recognize a weak POTUS when they see one.

It's not that Obama's 'weak', he, the Russians, the ChiComs, Hugo Chavez, Castro bros, etc, all share the same new world order goal.

We are creating a new world, a balanced world. A new world order, a multipolar world,” Chavez told reporters during a visit to Communist China, one of many. His “new world order” includes [RUSSIA], China, Iran,... and a significantly weakened United States, he explained.

This has been going on with Russia and Canada for quite some time. They often send bombers into our airspace and we send some F-18s to turn them around, they always claim it was an accident. Canada owns most of the artic, it falls under our map, and Ruskies want it, Denmark, Norway to name a few. Everyone wants to slice the pie up, but in the meantime it’s Canadian sovereign territory. The area is resource rich of course that’s why folks are fighting over it.
