Doctors question Perry's stem cell back treatment

He calls it innovative. Others call it a big risk. In any case, the stem cell procedure that Texas Gov. Rick Perry had last month was an unusual experiment to fix a common malady: a bad back.

Perry, the newest GOP presidential candidate, has access to the best possible care and advice. Yet he and his doctor chose a treatment beyond mainstream medicine: He had stem cells taken from fat in his own body, grown in a lab and then injected into his back and his bloodstream during a July 1 operation to fuse part of his spine. …

His doctor and friend, orthopedist Dr. Stanley Jones, could not be reached for comment despite repeated requests to the spokeswoman for his Houston-area hospital. …

However, some top scientists are questioning the safety and wisdom of Perry's treatment … Perry "exercised poor judgment" to try it, said Dr. George Q. Daley, of Children's Hospital Boston and the Harvard Stem Cell Institute. …

On the campaign trail Thursday in New Hampshire, Ray Sullivan, Perry's chief of staff, said: "The governor consulted with his physician and decided the best course of action for him. He's very pleased with the results of the surgery, with the rapid recovery and with the procedure that he had. And he feels like that is certainly his right to determine the best course of treatment for him." …

Perry's treatment was first reported by the Texas Tribune. The procedure was done by Jones, who works at Foundation Surgical Hospital — a private, doctor-owned orthopedics center in suburban Houston — but Perry spokesman Mark Miner would not say where it took place. …

This could make the stem cell debate and Obamacare debate very interesting should Perry become the nominee.

If he had gotten the stem cells from aborted human fetuses, he'd be a hero.

Well, he wouldn't be a hero, exactly. But you know what I mean.

No aborted fetuses involved, and it's "Houston, we have a problem."

There are still no useful applications of (third party) embronyic stem cells.

He had stem cells taken from fat in his own body,

Excellent! I've heard a persons own stem cells seem very promising. I'm so glad to hear he didn't have someone elses dead baby injected into his back. That's nothing short of barbaric.

My father had a similar treatment. It's outside the mainstream, certainly, but it worked for him.

And not having your back hurt is a big plus.

It's like a friend of mine's dad -- the ultimate skeptic and a pretty sharp-tongued fellow of great intellect. Late in life he suffered from phantom pains in his legs as a sequel to the polio he contracted as a young man.

The medical doctors told him they could do nothing for him, other than to dope him up on painkillers, and he would not accept anything that dulled his mind.

So he went to a chiropractor, even though he had been very outspoken in his skepticism as long as I knew him - aided of course by the outliers who claim to cure cancer, bedwetting, and the heartbreak of psoriasis.

He got immediate relief from the excruciating pain. His comment: "I still think they're quacks, but I don't hurt anymore!"

Obama never have that risky procedure done....... wait .....
we don't know what procedures Obama did or didn't have since we've never seen his medical records, or any other records for that matter.

They’re just upset because he had success with his own stem cells instead of using stem cells from dead babies.

I am not a Perry fan, but this is Perry’s business only. His body and his back.

He didn’t use embryonic stem cells.

I have about 4 friends who have gone to Dr Stan Jones, half of them think he is a quack the other half think he is a genius. I hope this works for Perry.

Perry would not have this option with -23BamaCare. His expected remaining benefit to society as Republican Politician would be weighed against the cost of the surgery.

Depends on what kind of back pain Perry was in. If it was debilitating enough then anything would be a relief.
If he had such back pain then his only option was a lot of pain medication and may be one step from a morphine pump.
So those that criticize may want to rethink.

Really a silly article. Oh - MSNBC. That’s what THEY do.

Any stick is good enough, I guess, when one has decided someone needs a beating.
