Rick Perry: A Candidate For Whom 'UnPresidential' Is A Virtue Texas governor's stance on economy and global warming may play well with the US right, but it turns off independents

Chris McGreal 19 August 2011

Rick Perry, seen here campaigning in New Hampshire, has drawn criticism over his boasts about new jobs in Texas. There are not many contenders to be president of the United States who consider it an asset to be called unpresidential.

But then Rick Perry is not looking for the support of those seeking a president like any other. At least not for now.

The Texas governor entered the race for the Republican presidential nomination less than a week ago and he has already drawn stinging criticism for calling the head of the US central bank a traitor, for describing evolution as "a theory that's out there" and for once again questioning the existence of global warming.

His views have drawn a barrage of derision and condemnation, and raised questions as to whether he has blown his shot as a likely Republican frontrunner before his candidacy has even got off the ground.

Perry, who portrays the government in Washington as an anti-American conspiracy and has promised to make it mostly "inconsequential" to people's lives, even drew criticism from within his own party after he suggested that Ben Bernanke, the chairman of the Federal Reserve, was a traitor for flooding the economy with trillions of dollars in stimulus money.

Karl Rove, the Republican strategist who set Perry on his path to the Texas governor's office and who put George Bush in the White House, derided the comments as "not a presidential statement".

It is too bad he shares the public’s ignorance on what a Scientific Theory is (AGW is not, by the way).

But we can’t insist on perfect. Ron Reagan isn’t coming back and so long as he is fiscally conservative and calls a rose a rose, such as calling a traitor a traitor, he is looking pretty good to Conservatives.

I am not jumping ship (although my hopes for Cain are flagging after the debate), but I have to say that Gov. Perry’s entry into the race is certainly proving the old adage “if you are getting flak it means you are over the target.”

Amazing how no one on the left...not a single media outlet, hack, pundit or host even dares to think that the most unpresidential of people is in the white house right now. Bowing to others, giving idiotic gifts not even paying attention to protocol in foreign nations....Bumbling Rookie, thy name is Obama.

Being derided by Karl Rove is a plus for Perry to me.

I like Herman Cain also. The man is on the right track...a man who whose decisions will be based on simple easy organized solutions and stop making everything so complicated and especially, corrupt. He has a presence that is strong, he’s able to convince just by being who he is. And what’s more he has a good sense of self in that he doesn’t make bragadocious claims of being the be all and end all. He seems to know there has to be consensus, but knows the decisions are his. And has a good sense of humor.

It’s a shame the many will discount his business success because he has no record of governance. And of course no name recognition. The media is never going to be his friend and give him a chance to get his name out there. Basically he will only be seen at debates and the controllers, even Fox, didn’t give him equal time.

I almost hate Ron Paul for what he did implicating Cain is tied to the Federal Reserve System. Not many know that the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas is just a cash pass thru bank and doesn’t have influence on the manipulation of our currency at the Federal Reserve System. And Ron Paul knew that Cain supported his audit of the federal reserve. The whole thing was a big lie.

Perry is not perfect. Nobody is. But he is genuine. I know my governor well and I know the issues well. And we’re going to have to stop toting the democatic bucket of manure and propaganda against him for the democrats.

Here is a link comparing the Texas economic model to the California economic model. Obama endorses the failed California model. Perry endorses the Texas model, which has worked in spite of federal policies which oppose it.

Truly, not much of a contest.

I just want someone who will FIGHT! That instinct to FIGHT was what I liked best about Palin, and is what has drawn me so strongly to Perry.

I have had it up to my eyeballs with metrosexual PC geek types running for office, promising to bring more civility to washington and promising to “work with” the opposition party to fix things.

BS!

I want someone who will DESTROY the liberals, kick em when they are down, and keep kicking them till they are destroyed utterly and completely forever as a party and a movement.

ha ha what does the Guardian know about American independents? It is really entertaining to watch these liberals flail about trying to find something - anything - they can throw at Perry.
