TEHRAN, Iran - Iran's state TV is reporting that two American men already held for two years in Tehran have been sentenced to 8 years in jail each on charges of espionage and illegal entry.
Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal have been held since July 2009 after being taken into custody on the Iran-Iraq border.
The station's website says Bauer and Fattal, who are both 28, have been sentenced to three years each for illegal entry into Iran and five years each for spying for the United States. It's not clear if that includes time served.
They have 20 days to appeal the sentence.

It is possible that 8 years in an Iranian prison could offset 4 years at Berkeley, and they could emerge conservatives.
This is just funny, assuming it is accurately reported. However, it has always been peculiar that these three liberals were just hiking along the Iran/Iraq border.
He should look at the silver lining. In eight years, he'll be fluent in Farsi as well.
Tresspass into Iran - get arrested, lose 1/2 your body weight and end up in prison for 8 years.
Tresspass into the United States of America - get free food, subsidized housing, free education, free medical care, jobs, throw your trash everywhere, spit on the citizens, and you don’t even have to speak English.
Good post. Enemies foreign, enemies domestic and useful idiots.
***I guess all those Peace Study classes didn’t do them any good when they encountered their first hard line thug in the world... ***
About them! “Shane Bauer, a 2007 honors graduate in peace and conflict studies,....”
Wonder how “mush for brains” is going to like “squeeling like a pig” in his Iranian prison cell FOR THE NEXT EIGHT YEARS! A lot of good those “Peace and Conflict” sutdies did him, and Berkeley did a real good job of preparing them for the REAL WORLD! ;-D
Wonder if he has paid off his school loans yet!
“Peace Studies” my ass. Man, karma sure is a bitch now isn’t it.
But, she was strong enough to go hiking in a war zone.
Stupid is as stupid does!
Sounds like a good lesson for them to learn.
They have probably already been “engaged” multiple times in prison, with no ring to show for it.
Ah, don’t you have to know which direction you are going to delivery pizza? Apparently these idiots don’t have a great sense of direction!
They may be guilty of being stupid, of being incredibly naive, or they may have been up to something more than just hiking. Regardless of the reason they were there, the Obama administration isn’t doing anything on their behalf to try to secure their release. The President’s primary duty is to protect the citizens of this country. The message here is that foreign governments can do whatever they want to our people, and the U.S. will do absolutley nothing about it.
Two fewer Obama voters for the next election.
I rarely laugh out loud (really laugh out loud) to internet postings. Bravo!!
You'd think that, or they could reach into their trust funds and buy a GPS. This is a weird case, isn't it? I mean, normally I'd be very upset if Americans were being held by Iran on trumped up charges.
But this is the kind of social Darwinism we haven't seen since Rachel Corrie made her little tactical misstep. About all I can muster up is a "silly hippies" and a shrug.
There were some pretty good responses to that question. Yours was the best. LOL!
