One of Texas Gov. Rick Perry's biggest alleged weaknesses in the Republican presidential primary is his less-than-draconian record on immigration. Although Perry has talked a lot about cracking down on undocumented immigrants, he has done little to change Texas' status as a "sanctuary state" and, indeed, he's explicitly rejected the idea of implementing Arizona-style immigration reform. The reason for this is pretty simple: Texas' economic "miracle" is built on on a continued influx of people, as well as a preponderance of low-wage jobs, especially in the housing sector.

So far I’ve found their willing disconnect from reality to be quite amusing. But I live in Los Angeles so I’m used to it.
Aside from the snide remarks in this Liberal Rag article... oddly enough I find is fairly accurate.. Perry - for 10 years has TALKED - TALKED - TALKED and Postured on nearly every aspect of controlling Illegal Aliens and securing the border - and has DONE next to nothing. I have a number of Hispanic friends on my Facebook page who are outraged that many Republican Presidential candidates totally believe that the vast majority of Hispanic/Latinos are in direct support of illegal immigration and vis a vie Illegal Aliens. Instead, it is an attempt to chart job growth in such a way that controls for people leaving one job market to enter another. To say "Wisconsin has a better job market than Texas because its unemployment rate is 0.6% lower" is a wholly untrue statement even though it cites accurate numbers. What this chart is meant to do is not posit a counter-factual, but to give a visual representation of the employment reality that is obscured by the way we calculate unemployment numbers.

That added up to 11,200 babies for which Medicaid kicked in 34.5 million dollars to deliver these babies, the feds another 9.5 million and Dallas taxpayers tossed in 31.3 million. The average illegal patient is 25 years and giving birth to her second anchor baby.

Texas leads the nation in minimum-wage jobs, and many positions don't offer health benefits. Also, steep budget cuts are expected to result in the loss of more than 100,000 jobs.
Many of the positions that have been created are on the lower end of the pay scale. Some 550,000 workers last year were paid at or below the federal minimum wage of $7.25, more than double the number making those wages in 2008, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
That's 9.5% of the Texas workforce, which gives it the highest percentage of minimum-wage workers in the nation -- a dubious title it shares with Mississippi.
Perry signed a budget in May that slashes $15 billion in government spending over the next two years. Also, the federal stimulus funds that poured into the state since 2009 have largely dried up… The state budget cuts alone could result in the loss of more than 100,000 jobs, many of them in the public sector

If this were true, all these new low-paying jobs should be dragging down the wages data, right? But if we look at the wages data since the beginning of the recession...
And it turns out that the opposite is true. Since the recession started hourly wages in Texas have increased at a 6th fastest pace in the nation.
As a side note, the only blue state that has faster growing wages is Hawaii.
It won’t do any good to run a more conservative candidate if they can’t beat Obama.
With the way Obama is going a paper bag will be able to beat him by this time next year.

If it’s Perry vs Obama, then it’s an easy choice...Perry all the way. Same goes for just about anyone the GOP might nominate.
But just once it would be nice to have a candidate who is conservative on immigration. I don’t think we’ve had one since Coolidge, or Eisenhower. We are not going to win the Hispanic vote. The question is how badly we will lose it, and if we can do better with whites by pursuing conservative immigration reform.
Bush was a shameless panderer, and the best he could manage with the allegedly natural conservative latino vote was maybe 40% in 2004 (he did NOT win 44% as was first incorrectly claimed). The GOP can either enact conservative immigration reform (i.e. reduce legal immigration and no path to citizenship for illegals) and have a fighting chance going forward, or they can continue to accept unending mass immigration and face demographic oblivion.
