Rick Perry's Overhyped Immigration "Soft Spot" (Left-wing media defends Ricardo)
Mother Jones ^ | Tim Murphy

Posted on 08/20/2011 9:11:52 AM PDT by Tempest

One of Texas Gov. Rick Perry's biggest alleged weaknesses in the Republican presidential primary is his less-than-draconian record on immigration. Although Perry has talked a lot about cracking down on undocumented immigrants, he has done little to change Texas' status as a "sanctuary state" and, indeed, he's explicitly rejected the idea of implementing Arizona-style immigration reform. The reason for this is pretty simple: Texas' economic "miracle" is built on on a continued influx of people, as well as a preponderance of low-wage jobs, especially in the housing sector.

The big party political candidate for rank and file insiders and assorted party groupies has already been chosen...They quickly followed behind in lockstep.

The campaign cheerleading threads for this guy will be non-stop for many months...Suddenly, if you don't support him, you'll be labeled a troll, or Communist or whatever, quickly reaching the point where nothing but praise and total supported will be accepted or tolerated.

BS

The Sanctuary City Bill was gutted in the State Senate.
Pressure from Big GOP donor Perry homes (no relation to Gov), and HEB grocery chain dum donor were responsible for the failure.

So we have yet ANOTHER lie being spread by the propagandist.

It won’t do any good to run a more conservative candidate if they can’t beat Obama.

Submit your list of conservatives that Republicans want to vote for in the primary, and that can win the Republican primary, but are "too" conservative for you.

From Pesky Truth:
[Offering illegal aliens in-state tuition] is true. Perry signed the bill six years ago. Under the law, any student who has lived in Texas at least three years and graduated from a Texas high school qualifies for in-state tuition. The law also requires noncitizens to apply for citizenship. “I’m for leaving the law like it is because I think it serves a good purpose,” Perry said. Texas was one of the first states to pass an in-state tuition bill for illegal immigrants. Ten states currently have such laws, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. About 12,138 children of immigrants got in-state tuition in 2009, about 1 percent of students in Texas trade schools, colleges, and universities. Of that number, 8,406 were in community and technical schools, only 3,725 at universities, and 7 at health-related institutes. Read a good summary of the current status of this issue here at a Dallas Morning News (http://www.dallasnews.com/news/education/headlines/20100314-Number-of-illegal-immigrants-getting-in-9925.ece) article. Critics have said it gives a financial advantage to illegal immigrants while U.S. citizens who are not Texas residents still must pay out-of-state tuition rates, which are higher. Personally, I don’t like giving illegals a favorable tuition rate over other state’s legal residents. I understand his reasoning, but I don’t have to like it. I do think that there was some pandering to the Mexican immigrants (legal and illegal) behind the overwhelming votes for this bill. As a measure of Texas’ version of the “Dream Act,” popularity, it should be noted that it passed the Texas Senate with NO “no” votes – Perry was not out on a limb on this one, it was overwhelmingly supported. It should also be noted that the Texas “Dream” act should not be confused with the federal version. The Texas version relates to higher education only whereas the federal act would facilitate giving legal status to children who entered the U.S. illegally with their parents.
Source: http://peskytruth.wordpress.com/2011/07/19/rick-perrys-negatives/ And I am okay with this. It sounds reasonable because it gets more people into Texas schools, and encourages those who would otherwise be on the edges of society to obtain legal status and contribute to the economy. And one other thing... 3,700 people at state universities isn't going to negatively affect my child's chances of getting an education either.

It is a blog, but well-referenced. The blogger links to all assertions. I found the content of the blog refreshing. I wish The Texas Tribune or even the Dallas Morning News conducted that kind of research.

Perry must be such a fake that Mother Jones blog writer finds him a fine alternative to Obama. He must think that an Obama/Perry matchup is a win win since Obama and Perry are so similar. That must be why they write pro Perry storied in case their hard left dope smoking hippie readers want another option come November, Perry is obviously it.

sarcasm still on

lol. Sheesh even the left loves RIck Perry. No wonder some insane FREEPERS here are supporting him. I always suspect that DU members come over to FR to disrupt the place. Every one of the Perry supporters are from DU. Why would the Democrats support Perry??????? One question that should be asked.

No one is too conservative for me. The more conservative, the better, but if they can’t beat Obama, it will be all for naught.

Submit your list of conservatives that Republicans want to vote for in the primary,
that can win the Republican presidential primary,
but that you want us to knock out in advance, in anticipation that as the republican nominee, they cannot defeat the democrat.

Don’t know. We have a long way to go. I doubt Bachmann can win and I know I won’t vote for Romney. We’ll see who else gets into the race.

The left loves all things muslim and illegal. Perry loves all things muslim and illegal also. So there ya go. He has a disgraceful record for all to see, if they care to look, regarding his supporting and pandering of and to illegals and the muslims. I do not think Perry supporters are from the DUmp tho, that is flat out wrong naps. I just think they have not looked over this Perry fella close enough, that’s all.

If it’s Perry vs Obama, then it’s an easy choice...Perry all the way. Same goes for just about anyone the GOP might nominate.

But just once it would be nice to have a candidate who is conservative on immigration. I don’t think we’ve had one since Coolidge, or Eisenhower. We are not going to win the Hispanic vote. The question is how badly we will lose it, and if we can do better with whites by pursuing conservative immigration reform.

Bush was a shameless panderer, and the best he could manage with the allegedly natural conservative latino vote was maybe 40% in 2004 (he did NOT win 44% as was first incorrectly claimed). The GOP can either enact conservative immigration reform (i.e. reduce legal immigration and no path to citizenship for illegals) and have a fighting chance going forward, or they can continue to accept unending mass immigration and face demographic oblivion.
