One of Texas Gov. Rick Perry's biggest alleged weaknesses in the Republican presidential primary is his less-than-draconian record on immigration. Although Perry has talked a lot about cracking down on undocumented immigrants, he has done little to change Texas' status as a "sanctuary state" and, indeed, he's explicitly rejected the idea of implementing Arizona-style immigration reform. The reason for this is pretty simple: Texas' economic "miracle" is built on on a continued influx of people, as well as a preponderance of low-wage jobs, especially in the housing sector.

Pressure from Big GOP donor Perry homes (no relation to Gov), and HEB grocery chain dum donor were responsible for the failure.

[Offering illegal aliens in-state tuition] is true. Perry signed the bill six years ago. Under the law, any student who has lived in Texas at least three years and graduated from a Texas high school qualifies for in-state tuition. The law also requires noncitizens to apply for citizenship. “I’m for leaving the law like it is because I think it serves a good purpose,” Perry said. Texas was one of the first states to pass an in-state tuition bill for illegal immigrants. Ten states currently have such laws, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. About 12,138 children of immigrants got in-state tuition in 2009, about 1 percent of students in Texas trade schools, colleges, and universities. Of that number, 8,406 were in community and technical schools, only 3,725 at universities, and 7 at health-related institutes. Personally, I don’t like giving illegals a favorable tuition rate over other state’s legal residents. I understand his reasoning, but I don’t have to like it. I do think that there was some pandering to the Mexican immigrants (legal and illegal) behind the overwhelming votes for this bill. As a measure of Texas’ version of the “Dream Act,” popularity, it should be noted that it passed the Texas Senate with NO “no” votes – Perry was not out on a limb on this one, it was overwhelmingly supported. It should also be noted that the Texas “Dream” act should not be confused with the federal version. No one is too conservative for me. The more conservative, the better, but if they can’t beat Obama, it will be all for naught.

Don’t know. We have a long way to go. I doubt Bachmann can win and I know I won’t vote for Romney. We’ll see who else gets into the race.

If it’s Perry vs Obama, then it’s an easy choice...Perry all the way. Same goes for just about anyone the GOP might nominate.
But just once it would be nice to have a candidate who is conservative on immigration. I don’t think we’ve had one since Coolidge, or Eisenhower. We are not going to win the Hispanic vote. The question is how badly we will lose it, and if we can do better with whites by pursuing conservative immigration reform.
Bush was a shameless panderer, and the best he could manage with the allegedly natural conservative latino vote was maybe 40% in 2004 (he did NOT win 44% as was first incorrectly claimed). The GOP can either enact conservative immigration reform (i.e. reduce legal immigration and no path to citizenship for illegals) and have a fighting chance going forward, or they can continue to accept unending mass immigration and face demographic oblivion.
