Rick Perry aims for right balance of firebrand and statesman in GOP race
Washinton Post ^ | August 19, 2011 | Philip Rucker and Nia-Malika Henderson,

.....In part because he is the newest entrant, Perry has drawn large crowds this week in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. Here in Florence, he was greeted as a heartthrob Friday morning as more than 300 people jammed around tables, stood on booths and craned their necks to see past the hot breakfast buffet at Bazen’s Family Restaurant and take stock of the Texan.

It was one of the more enthusiastic crowds any candidate has assembled this year, and Perry did not disappoint when he tore into Obama.

“The president’s been on a jobs tour,” Perry said. “He had his big ol’ bus — his big ol’ $1.2 million bus, made in Canada. But, anyway, the real issue is our president’s out there and he goes on a jobs tour. This is the president of the United States that has killed more jobs in America than I think any president. . . . The only job he cares about is the one he’s got.”

Perry said his campaign is about “cuttin’ taxes, cuttin’ regulations and cuttin’ litigation.” In one of his biggest applause lines, he said: “I am a pro-business governor, and I don’t make any apologies to anybody about it. I’m going to be a pro-business president, and I won’t make any apologies about it.”

Perry learned this week that what may please his Republican audiences may not go over as well with people tuning in nationwide. Speaking to a ballroom of Iowa Republicans on Sunday night, Perry said: “One of the reasons, one of the powerful reasons, that I’m running for the presidency of the United States is to make sure that every young man and woman who puts on the uniform of this country respects highly the president of the United States.” .....

Stop with the RINO thing.

You should tell that to RINO Rick; he's the RINO, I'm a conservative.

If you try to tar everyone then it losses force.

I've tarred no one. Perry's record reveals he is anything but conservative. That may be hard for you and other Perry supporters to accept, but it is fact.

Perry is more conservative then Romney or Bush. He definitely is not a favorite on 7th street, at least not yet.

So that's the measure in which conservatives should pick their nominee --- he/she just need be more conservative than Mitt Romney? I don't think so. And...btw...Bush isn't running. We need a conservative representing our conservative values, not a proven RINO. Rick Perry is a proven RINO. Some may want to overlook that. I don't.

We got 500+ days until election day and you need to pick a side. Either start shooting the proper enemy or get out of the way.

Oh BS! Nobody has to pick a candidate until all who are running are in for crying out loud! And even then they don't have to choose until Election Day if they determine to wait it out.

It's been said if one can't stand the heat.....that goes both ways. Good grief lighten up man!

Been here since 2000, who’s a newbie? Bashing a party candidate who has’nt even started running full throttle yet, is ridiculous. I love Sarah too, but there are intangibles that we must be honest about. I hope she is the lightning rod that distracts the liberals from swift boating Perry. But Perry can and will beat Obama in the genral.

It takes a small mind to believe that if someone doesn’t support RINO Rick Perry they are trying to reelect Obama. But if that’s the message you wish to convey by all means please proceed.

It’s more fun to watch the desperation among the Palin Cult around here. They are about to melt down any second. Some of them already have

What Palin cult? I see no difference between Perry's crew and Palin's, both are passionate and should not make excuses for being so. It's election time!

....but interesting that Perry's taking his cues from Palin and Trump. Both who know well how to name that tune in one note.

The fact that you think he can't tolerate criticism is very troubling.

Sarah Palin can tolerate criticism, and give it back ten-fold.

That's the kind of person we need, not some marshmallow.

So you're loyal to the Republican party first and not conservatism? Okay.

And it's 'ridiculous' to think we can't critique RINO Rick Perry because he hasn't started 'running full throttle' -- he has a record and that record is what we should base our opinions on, not his campaign promises.

No, but I am a proud member of the 101st Airborne Ranger Division as well as a combat veteran. And just because you stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night does not qualify you as a critic or orator of all things perfect.

WaPo may be “rooting” for Perry because they think he may be easy for Obama to beat, or they may be “rooting” for him because they underestimate him.

Those of us in Texas know about Perry, including the warts. He does have some.

But we keep reelecting him, even when he runs against someone else that we like, Senator Hutchinson or Mayor White, for instance.

Perry is one shrewd politician. Seems like he often hits the right chord. And he is a ruthless administrator. Just ask any commissioner he has appointed. They do not dare oppose him.

I believe you need to learn the proper use of the term "swift boating". The "swift boat" folks brought the truth out about the phoney skerry.
