I had Sean McClanahan of Iowa Firearms Coalition on The War on Guns radio show last week to talk about the college student who applied for a concealed carry permit only to be called by a representative of the University of Iowa Threat Assessment Teamit seems the sheriff is in the habit of informing on students to the administration. In his reporting on that outrageous story, Sean also mentioned that Iowa City is a nuclear weapons free zone.
That struck me as typical and expected for the anti-defense crowdat least its consistent, for a changeso I decided to look up the ordinance, originally enacted in 1985, in the Iowa City Code.
The people of the city find that the presence of nuclear weapons facilities within the city is in direct conflict with the maintenance of the community's public health, safety, morals, economic well being and general welfare.
I wonder what the citys health, safety, economic well being and general welfare would be like if we unilaterally disarmed and placed ourselves at the mercy of the Russians and Chinese? Remember, the same crowd also doesnt like guns, so a conventional defense would also be out of the question. And as for morals, I guess everyone who works in the military, those who work directly in nuclear defense support functions and those in other branches who puts their lives on the line when deployed, and who would prefer to have a deterrent to imporve their chances, is considered immoral by the solons of Iowa City.
As for the heart of the ordinance:
No person shall knowingly engage in work within the city, the purpose of which is the development, production, deployment, launching, maintenance or storage of nuclear weapons or components of nuclear weapons.

If the folks in Iowa City applied the same liberal 'logic' that led them to pass the bill they wouldn't charge Obama. They'd charge the military aide carrying the football. Obama probably pays no more attention to the contraption than Clinton did and there were books written about Clinton's attitude towards it.
