Gallup ^ | 8-22-11 | Gallup

PRINCETON, NJ -- President Barack Obama is closely matched against each of four possible Republican opponents when registered voters are asked whom they would support if the 2012 presidential election were held today. Mitt Romney leads Obama by two percentage points, 48% to 46%, Rick Perry and Obama are tied at 47%, and Obama edges out Ron Paul and Michele Bachmann by two and four points, respectively.

President Obama's job approval rating is hovering around the 40% mark. This is below the rating that any of the six incumbent presidents re-elected since Eisenhower has had at the time of the presidential election. However, in August of the year before they were re-elected, Ronald Reagan (43%) and Bill Clinton (46%) were both below 50%. Obama's position of rough parity against leading GOP candidates shows that more Americans at the moment say they would vote for Obama than approve of the job he is doing -- perhaps a reflection of the continuing lack of a strong front-runner on the Republican side

Note that Gallup polled registered voters, not likely voters. There's usually a significant opinion gap between the two demographics.

Well that settles it! Romney is our nominee!

Thanks Gallup! Now we don’t have to worry about those messy debates, or whether Sarah should enter the race, we have our answer!

Now we all just need to vote for Romney like good little sheep.

I think it’s more significant that Gallup polled Registrered Voters AT ALL...

Something is up, and I think a movement has begun, within the Democrat Party, to remove Obama and run someone else in 2012.

I know a couple of inner-city local and state-level Democrats who think they lose thier jobs next November if Obama stays on the ballot.

Obama is responsible for the "Flash Mobs"....it is called "spreading the wealth".....Van Jones a close confederate of Obama's, both have encouraged this lawlessness among the Black youth by making them believe they can have what they want without working for it...just taking whatever they want as their President has explained is their right.

Nice of Gallop to state who they prefer their candidate to face, and shout it to those who believe in [push] polling.

Shocking.

These are disastrous numbers for a sitting President at this stage of the game.

I am very excited to see Bachmann doing as well as she is. Perry too for that matter.

Romney looks the best right now because he has the most name recognition, but that will soon change.

In August 1979, incumbent President Jimmy Carter was tied with former California Gov. Reagan — each getting 45% of the vote. Reagan ultimately defeated Carter by 10 points*****

This is the scenario that is most like 2012, assuming the pubbies nominate a conservative who can articulate conservative values. Carter just like 0zer0 was clueless, so things are not going to get any better between now and election day. And in all likelihood will get much worse.

Great Gallup and the Dims can have Romney....as for me I will go with someone else......guess this means that the Dims will move into the Republican voting ranks during the primaries and vote for Romney like they did for McLaim.....

Romney defeating Obama doesn’t solve any of our fundamental problems.

OUCH! That has got to hurt. Going to be some sleepless nights at the DNC.

If a poll like this is so bad, can you IMAGINE the horrors the DNC is seeing in internal polling?
