Perry takes lead in new Iowa poll; Update: Perry has double-digit national lead in PPP poll ?
Hot Air ^ | August 22, 2011 | Ed Morrissey

Posted on 08/23/2011 10:06:03 AM PDT by RobinMasters

A couple of caveats are in order before we start looking at this poll. First, it comes from PPP, a Democratic pollster which has had its fair share of difficulties in sampling Republicans. It’s also early in the race, as Rick Perry just starts getting vetted and Sarah Palin hasn’t yet begun to campaign, if in fact she decides to campaign at all.

Still, this is a rather dramatic result:

The race is pretty close four ways in Iowa but Rick Perry is the new favorite among Republican voters in the state. Among announced candidates he’s at 22% to 19% for Mitt Romney, 18% for Michele Bachmann, and 16% for Ron Paul. Further back are Herman Cain at 7%, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum at 5%, and Jon Huntsman at 3%.

If you throw Sarah Palin into the mix the numbers are pretty similar with Perry at 21%, Romney at 18%, Bachmann at 15%, Paul at 12%, and Palin registering at only 10%.

The poll shows that Perry is still weak compared to Romney
who is HIDING for the most part.

Perry might consider finally getting some traction
against Romney.

Perhaps he cannot, because they are both RINOs?

*waiting for the s-—storm from Palin supporters to ensue*

I like Palin almost as much as Perry, but she just doesn’t poll well, regardless of whether the poll is right, left, up down etc.

Her hardcore supporters don’t like polls at all - any of them.

Update II: PPP says they have a national survey coming out tomorrow that shows Rick Perry with a double-digit lead over Romney for the Republican nomination. According to their Twitter feed:

11:34 (CT): Our national GOP poll, out tomorrow, is better for Perry even than the Iowa one. Double digit lead.

11:36: Nationally, if it came down to a 2 person race: Perry 52, Romney 36. Mitt needs to try to wrap it up before it gets to that point.

11:40: More evidence Bachmann has maxed out support- down 9 to Romney, 30 to Perry in national heads to heads

More evidence that Perry could be a Romney killer. Even if the GOP samples are off, it jives with other recent polling. Please let Mittens fade away, and fast.

This poll shows he’s weak against Romney? What exactly are you on?

After a week he’s ahead in iowa and double digits nationally.

Oh and for people not wanting to believe a Democrat polster that’s fine..but RASS had Perry with a double digit national lead too. Perry could flame out....but right now his future is in his hands.

While Perry is not my favorite candidate, calling him a Romneyesque RINO is irresponsible. In fact, Perry may be the only one who can take out Mittens. If he does that early, it might result in a realignment of the supporters of other candidates around an even more conservative choice than Perry.

It's not about numbers. It's about TRIANGULATION.

Two RINOs.

RomneyCARE and PerryCARE.
Undistinguishable.

There is room for only one GOP RINO, right?
Romney and Perry both support open borders
but claim otherwise.

Both are supported (or were) by Rove.

Romney. Perry. Two RINOs.

“No RINOs”

"The poll shows that Perry is still weak compared to Romney" when it shows him in the lead?

And "Perry might consider finally getting some traction against Romney." when Perry is killing Romney in nearly every poll (including Rasmussen by double-digits) despite the fact that he was hardly known by anyone prior to last week?

You're not making any sense whatsoever... go back to posting big pictures of aircraft carriers.

I can't see him taking out Mittens before the first Super Tuesday. I believe before that is Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Michighan and Florida. I can't see Mittens losing New Hampshire and Michighan. That means (IMO) worst case scenario, going into Super Tuesday he'll have two wins. That's enough to stay in. I think if Bachman doesn't win Iowa, she's out.

No, it's emotional.

RomneyCare, according to Wiki, is

The Massachusetts health care insurance reform law (sobriquet: "Romneycare") enacted in 2006, mandates that nearly every resident of Massachusetts obtain a state-government-regulated minimum level of healthcare insurance coverage and provides free health care insurance for residents earning less than 150% of the federal poverty level (FPL) who are not eligible for Mass Health (Medicaid). The law also partially-subsidizes health care insurance for those earning up to 300% of the FPL.

Where is the equivalent health insurance reform law that Perry has enacted which is so close to RomneyCare as to be indistinguishable?

July 18, 2011: Gov. Rick Perry signs health care reform bill into law; Texas fourth state to pass health care compacts bill

"With the signature of Gov. Rick Perry today, Texas has joined three other states stating their intention to enter into a health care compact.

The compact, which would challenge the authority of the federal government to dictate the terms of the federally and state funded Medicaid program, was part of a wide-ranging health care reform bill, Senate Bill 7, passed by the Texas Legislature in its recently concluded special session.

Georgia, Oklahoma and Missouri have already signed onto the compacts movement, with Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon signing a bill into law on Thursday.

The law establishes Texas, along with the other three states, as pioneers in an uncharted use of Article 1, Section 10 of the Constitution which allows states to enter into agreements that, with the approval of Congress, cannot be abridged by the federal government. There are more than 200 state compacts currently in effect, nearly all of them related to commerce.”…..

I guess if somebody insist that the grass is purple even though it's obviously green there isn't much you can do. I would say though that Perry is well on his way to tractioning himself right into the White House.

As far as calling Perry a RINO, I guess the only option some people on the losing end of a political campaign have to them is to resort to name calling.

You really need to keep that PDS in check.

Romney or someone (Paul?) even took out an ad in the paper trying to find sexual skeletons.

You are correct. I get tired of the old saw, "The polls are rigged", or "the liberal pollsters trying to pick our candidates for us". The major polling companies have no interest in "fixing" polls. A bad record on polling means no business. I would dare anyone here to show me where the major polling companies are systemically wrong in their poll results.

I just hope that all these sexual rumors have no basis in fact.

The Dems in Texas have been digging for years.

Amongst Perry's opposition was the Rove managed Kay Bailey campaign. I firmly believe that if the well Texas connected Rove would have discovered credible dirt, he would have dished it. And if Rove had anything, you can bet it is already in Romney's hands. True or not, expect Romney's flying monkeys to be working overtime to take out any perceived threat...without his fingerprints on any of it, of course.

That will change once the fight begins. I DO believe that she polls poorly now, but that’s not a political death sentence. Esp. when the perception will be shattered by reality once she enters, and she starts saying things that people can relate to on a daily basis.
If it doesn’t happen, America will have to settle for a weak facsimile, Perry or Romney, who will preside over America’s continuing decline. Not much to get excited about, that’s for sure. Bob

Perry coddles illegal immigrants, and tries to pretend that Islam can peacefully co-exist in America. And his doubling spending in Texas in 10 years does not give comfort. His insistence on Gardasil and the Trans-Corridor Highway long after people’s sensible objections were made clear, make me trust his judgment and trustworthiness. Bob
