You’re Gonna Need MORE Than Gold…

By Simon Black

08/22/11 Everyday more and more people are waking up to the idea that they MUST own gold if they want to protect their assets from an out of control government. Owning gold is a great first step, but as history tells us, responsible people can and should do more before it’s too late…

History paints a bleak picture of the decline of Rome. Once warring consuls Antony, Lepidus, and Octavian were finished duking it out with each other in 31 BC, any semblance of the original Roman republic was gone forever.

Successive emperors of Rome included men like Tiberius, a paranoid deviant with a lust for executions. He spent the last decade of his reign completely detached from Rome, living in Capri.

Following Tiberius was Caligula, infamous for his moral depravity and insanity. According to Roman historians Suetonius and Cassius Dio, Tiberius would send his legions on pointless marches and turned his palace into a bordello of such repute that it inspired the 1979 porno film named for him.

Caligula was followed by Claudius, a stammering, slobbering, confused man as described by his contemporaries. Then there was Nero, who not only managed to burn down his city but was also the first emperor to debase the value of Rome’s currency.

You know the rest of the story – Romans watched their leadership and country get worse and worse.

All along the way, there were two types of people: the first group were folks that figured, “This has GOT to be the bottom, it can only get better from here.” Their patriotism was rewarded with reduced civil liberties, higher taxes, insane despots, and a polluted currency.

The other group consisted of people who looked at the warning signs and thought, “I have to get out of here.” They followed their instincts and moved on to other places where they could build their lives, survive, and prosper.

You’re reading this because you probably fall into the latter category. You’re aware of the problems. You can feel your civil liberties and economic opportunities slowly slipping away, all while the crop of national leadership grows more depraved with every election cycle.

You want to do something about it. You want to take steps to protect yourself, your family, and your livelihood. Perhaps you’ve already started by investing in precious metals. Gold is a great hedge against inflation, political turmoil, and default – things I call “sovereign risk.”

You see, some of the world’s largest governments are going broke, and these politicians will take any steps necessary in order to maintain the status quo: they will lie, they will steal, they will declare wars, they will bankrupt their people with hyperinflation… whatever it takes.

This is the greatest risk we face today. Buying gold is a great start, but there is MUCH more that you can do.

I’m an advocate of what I call planting ‘multiple flags.’ At its core, planting multiple flags means that you are diversifying your sovereign risk around the globe so that no single government has total control over your livelihood. Let me explain.

Let’s say you are from the US. If you live, work, bank, invest, register your business, own your property, store your gold, etc. within the US, and one little thing goes wrong, all of those assets and interests are at substantial risk. Any judge or bureaucrat could make them all disappear with a few mouse clicks.

It needn’t even be anything big. Maybe some three-letter agency suspects you of wrongdoing. Maybe your neighbor wants to sue you. Maybe they outlaw gold ownership (again). There are infinite possibilities, and infinite risks.

When you plant multiple flags, you diversify those assets around the globe. Store your gold in Switzerland. Open a bank account in Hong Kong. Register your company in Singapore. Establish an emergency ‘backup’ residency in Chile.

You can plant flags with just about any interest in your life – where you go to get high quality, cost effective medical care, where you set up your web servers for an online business, where you establish an international brokerage account, etc.

This approach is NOT just for the super rich. In fact, I’ve helped all kinds of people to plant their own flags, young and old, rich and poor.

Taking some simple steps to protect yourself will give you extraordinary peace of mind. You’ll know that, without doubt, you have some savings socked away that NOBODY can touch. You’ll know that you have a solid emergency backup plan. You’ll know that everything you’ve worked for won’t vanish in an instant.

What’s going to happen when the government sends in jackboot thugs to take the gold?

I'll give them my lead first.

Mark Levin and Glenn Beck both endorse Goldline but I bet they get a better deal.

It’s in one of the Canadian bank bokerages. There are some US reporting requirements, so you have to fill out paperwork etc. Better to start now before they close the borders. I have a name if you want, but it has to be for investment quantities, not a few grand.

Yup.

I take it for grated because I live in The Rainest City In The US.

There are creeks, ponds, streams and lakes everywhere. I was putting up a fence once and 'hit' water digging a post hole.

"sounds like an old refrigerator would be great for potatoes....laying them out on the shelves individually..."

That seems worth an experiment for anyone who might have an old refrigerator around, with the usual warning about keeping it completely inaccessible to unattended kids, of course.

I'm digging and building a root cellar but am not sure about how well it will work, yet (exceptionally cold climate). ...trying one with steps to heavily insulated side entrance, properly built random rubble rock walls (w/ thick rebar support and the kind of mortar made for lateral loads) insulated with polyisocyanurate around the top four feet on the outside, rock floor, ceiling three feet under ground, with oversized ceiling timbers (logs oversized for the earth load from timber load tables), polyurethane coated, insulated and isolated from moisture.

For folks living where permits are required even for agricultural structures, treated and graded lumber supporting any loads will be necessary to pass plan review and inspection. And for most of you, the cellar will not have to be buried and insulated like mine (over 9,000 ft. elev. here, lows ~30 F or lower, 80 mph wind gusts and sometimes deep snows in winter).

One plus is that at this altitude, seed potatoes from the garden can be kept and planted next year (no chance of disease if potatoes disease-free to begin with). It's too high for spread of potato diseases and even for potato beetles. The downsides are the extreme climate, isolation vs. high fuel and other costs, predators, difficulties in growing other garden items, etc.

The author suggest opening a bank account in Hong Kong. A very good idea.

Let me take it a step further. Hold your nose and open it with one of the large, state-run Chinese Banks Hong Kong Branches - Bank of China, ICBC, etc...

The advantages are: HK is separate legal entity, so they can do things in the free market of HK that they can not do in China. They are also backed by the Chinese Gov’t and their hoards of money. Finally - if the US Treasury or IRS comes calling, the Chinese Banks will tell Big Brother to go stuff themselves.

My questions were pertaining to the actual related article of the thread...where do you go, how do you get there or get your assets from there, if global SHTF? With a click of the mouse, your diversified, overseas "flags" (assets/options) could disappear.

Put an apple in with potatoes anytime you store them long-term.
The apple gives off ethylene gas which prevents the taters from sprouting. They will stay good much longer.

And, I would add, when SHTF bridges may suddenly become impassible, so one should plan accordingly.

For me the key indicator is going to be in the value of the dollar. A cop's not going to stay on the job when his paycheck will no longer buy a bag of potato chips.

Here's a cool, related web site I stumbled on this past week:

True Prices Measured in Gold

BTW, there's nothing particularly magic about gold - it's just a "convenient commodity". It could be just as valid to value things in barrels of a particular type of oil.

My grandfather was Irish, his parents came here during the Potato Famine. He called them "pit potatoes".

In the fall, he'd dig a pit about 6 ft deep (they need to be below the winter frost line), put a thick layer of straw on the bottom. He put probably 100 lbs of homegrown potatoes on the straw, cover it with another thick layer of straw, and bury it for the winter.

After the thaw, he'd dig them up. By far, the best potatoes I've ever had. It must have been the sweetness of the straw, or the aging, or both, but it gave them a sweet flavor, with none of the dirt flavor you sometimes get from store-bought potatoes.

Gold is pretty worthless without a security structure.

Exactly . Gold only value as "currency" is it's percieved worth for transactions. If society truly collapses, A la Mad Max style, gold would be worth less than lead. And if the government decrees it as "illegal tender" and criminalizes it's possession, any merchant that exchanges for real goods(food, gasoline etc.)would be foolish.

Better to be independent as possible, grow your own food, or make yourself useful, have a useful skill. There won't be much need for paper pushers and lawyers and high demand for tradesmen, i.e, metalworkers, distilers(both for drinking and fuel),farmers, mechanics gunsmiths, etc.

Do you know how one can safely keep ‘taters in the ground without rotting or “going bad”?

Assuming there crop was healthy to begin with (no outbreak of fungus) potatoes, like turnips, can be left in the ground over winter. However their buds or "eyes" will start to sprout with warm spring weather so it would be best to dig them up if you plan on eating them.

And if kept in a cool dry place can be stored until next planting season.

It's historical value against invading armies was it couldn't be easily destroyed, trampled down or burned like wheat or oats or carried off as spoils of war.

Today's it's usefulness is that looter's want something easily seized and carried off. Even if they(urban or suburban looters) knew what potato plants looked like in the first place, it is doubtful they would spend the labour or time to dig up the tubers.

Don't want to hang around until the owners show up with shotguns.

Don't for get WATER!

Absolutely, water is a must.

Forget "going long" in gold, get barrels and stored Potable(clean) water.

When everything shuts down,(water as well as sewer services) clean water will be in high demand and short on supply.

Just think of Katrina and New Orleans. People begin dying of dehydration long before anyone,if any, died of starvation. Surrounded by water but not a drop was fit to drink(or wade through)

Even the water in the pipes was contaminated, full of bacteria and spilled chemicals. Old disease Westerners have long forgotten about, like Typhoid fever will spread like wildfire because people will drink unsafe water...

If you’re starving, what is worth more—food or gold?

I think the idea is that on the way down, you can sell gold for dollars at the current exchange rate that have the same buying power as the dollars used to buy the gold to begin with.

We are all too old to survive to a Mad Max situation.

Or, put another way, if you survive to Mad Max, that means you passively acquiesced to having your guns taken, your gold taken, your land taken, your stored food taken.

They used to carve (or chisel) dubloons into quarters and pieces of eight for smaller purchases.

Which is where the term "two-bits" comes from...when there was an eight-part dollar. Two bits equaled a quarter. Thus the 'two-bits' tag afforded to our current 25 cent quarter.

That is a standard sales pitch to get folks to buy numismatic coins instead of bullion. It's based on a supposed exemption for such coins the first time gold was made illegal to hold. (like any of that would matter if the powers that be decided to make holding gold illegal again)
