"an adults desire to have sex with children is 'normative'"Normative" (I had to look it up): creating standards. It appears that these people are attempting to do exactly that.
"pedophiles 'have feelings of love and romance for children' in the same way adult heterosexuals and homosexuals have romantic feelings for one another.Perhaps so. Perhaps not. However in either case this is beside the points that pedophilia is harmful to children and that pedophilia and homosexuality are diseases.
Both homosexuality and pedophilia are abnormal and pathological. Each is a disease caused by a lesion in the reproductive system.
A proclamation to the contrary--as by some organization such as the American Psychological Association--will not alter this.
Homosexuality and pedophilia are not the same.
As long as homosexuality involves only consenting adults in private, it is compensated and warrents no outside interference.
Pedophilia, on the other hand, involves an assault on children--who cannot give informed consent--and is likely to injure the reproductive system of the child in the manner of any other communicable disease. Therefore children must be protected from pedophiles.
The fact that many people can and sometimes do engage in homosexual activity does not change the fact that homsexuality is a disease any more than the fact that many people can and sometimes do drink alcohol changes the fact that alcoholism is a disease or that many people can be and sometimes are exposed to communicable diseases (e.g. tuberculosis) without becoming infected (i.e. without developing a lesion) changes the fact that tuberculosis is a disease.
"Normative" (I had to look it up): creating standards.
Yep. It's misused in that sentence, I'm guessing out of a desire to sound more academic. The sentence should read "an adult's desire to have sex with children is 'normal'", but that's just a little too blatant (and blatantly false) for the press releases. It's the actions of such organizations as the APA that these "activists" want to be normative, i.e. create new standards. And, of course and especially, the courts. The problem with that is that you don't just create new norms by propaganda and legal maneuvering.
I'm more than a little skeptical about the therapeutic model for this sort of thing anyway. Attraction to children is not, after all, a mental pathology that needs to be "decriminalized" because it's not illegal, just as wanting to kill someone is not illegal. Acting on either impulse is, and it ought to be.
I mention the two together because where social norms are infinitely plastic and at the mercy of grand declarations by psychologists and social activists, nothing may be prohibited, even murder. What one has at that point isn't a new, open society, what one has is no society at all.
It's perfectly understandable that perverts - I use the word precisely - wish to gain legal protection for their activities. It's also understandable that jaded academics may reach for something ever more sensational to publish in order to feed their own egos. Despite all the academic Newspeak there isn't really a great deal more to this conference than that.
