WASHINGTON (AP) -- Thousands of Verizon workers on strike pushed the number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits last week to its highest level in a month.

But excluding the work stoppage, layoffs likely fell. That should help ease fears that the U.S. economy is on the verge of a recession. [lol]

Investors appeared to overlook the report. Stock futures held most of their early gains.

Oh so the unions are back to trying to destroy private industry and therefore the economy, I guess.

I learn something new every day, never knew that strikers were eligible for unemployment.

Someone needs to suggest to Paul Shanklin, he needs a parody of the Bangle "Manic Monday."

Just an unexpected Thursday...

Generally, they aren’t.

I actually learned something from these reports today. The number reported is "claims." The claims can be rejected, and yet they still show as a "claim."

I wonder how long before The Won starts claiming that TEA Partiers are inflating the figures by filing bogus claims that get rejected, just to push up the "claims" number.

You're right, they are not eligible because they were still employed.

The 8,500 Verizon employees probably lost their jobs absent the strike anyway since they are eliminating a lot of their land line divisions.

Sounds like one of those corporate statements where they say they had a quarterly profit increase of $100 million less a one time charge of $5 billion dollars.

>>>I learn something new every day, never knew that strikers were eligible for unemployment<<<

It is crime that people who willingly walk away from their jobs are allowed to steal taxpayer dollars in the form of unemployment benefits.

If they had been locked out, fine, but striking workers should not get unemployment benefits.

That’d be a tough sell to convince anyone outside what’s left of Hussein’s base that evil tea partiers are taking time off from work to file bogus UE claims.

Hussein’s base will vote for him anyway, no matter what.

Very interesting.

This places a very big club in the hands of the unions with which to beat Obama, does it not? Little Richie Trumka could extract a lot out of him by threatening to send a bunch of guys out on strike next summer and have them all file unemployment.

Thanks, so if it’s based on claims, then hackers or spammers or whomever could make the number jump into the millions if they organized an effort to do so?

This blows my mind...since when does going out on strike qualify you to draw unemployment benefits? Absolute insanity!
