Parents sending children off to college for the first time, beware: Their “freshman orientation” is all too likely to include being herded through a “tunnel of oppression” to learn about the evils of “white privilege,” being lectured about how they’re part of a “rape culture” or being forced to discuss their sexual identities with complete strangers -- before they even meet their first professor.
That’s right: For all we hear about faculty ideological or political bias, campus administrators are often worse when it comes to brainwashing students.
Consider the shocking account from a student trained to be a dorm supervisor -- a resident adviser, or RA -- at DePauw University in Indiana. One of her first duties last fall was to lead her new students through a house decorated as a “Tunnel of Oppression,” where supposedly “realistic” demonstrations in each room taught lessons such as how religious parents hate their gay children, Muslims would find no friends on a predominantly non-Muslim campus and overweight women suffer from eating disorders.
Indeed, in her training to become an RA, “We were told that ‘human’ was not a suitable identity, but that instead we were first ‘black,’ ‘white,’ or ‘Asian’; ‘male’ or ‘female’; ... ‘heterosexual’ or ‘queer.’ We were forced to act like bigots and spout off stereotypes while being told that that was what we were really thinking deep down.” Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. must be spinning in his grave.
Unsurprisingly, she turned down the school’s offer to be an RA this year -- she’d rather find another job. DePauw is no rare case. At least 96 colleges across the country have run similar “tunnel of oppression” programs in the last few years.

At my son’s orientation they put on a skit about ‘tolerance’. We must be tolerant of the gay students, tolerant of the slutty girls that drink too much, tolerant of the party hounds, tolerant of the kids that don’t have a lot of money. In the skit, when the Christian kid asked his friends if anyone wanted to do Bible study with him, he was promptly lectured about how he needed to be tolerant that not everyone is a Christian. There was also another skit about sex on campus. The overall message was..have sex with whoever you want as quickly and whenever you want, just make sure you wear protection and get tested for STD’s. I wanted to yank him out of there, but 12 years of Christian education and my warning him about what college would be like in the land of liberals has prepared him.
I believe I’m seeing signs here and there that students are on to this indoctrination stuff. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if one of these days an entire incoming freshman class just laughed their way through the entire “Tunnel of Oppression” exercise - and then invoked God’s blessings upon the twits that subjected them to it. As the current phrase goes, “Heads would explode!”

It seems a lot easier to walk as a semi-immortal among college students, who never seem to grow up as a new batch of them comes on line every Fall, than to develop one's self in the scary real world.
Damn, I remember my freshman orientation. It was a week long celebration of bands, and a two hour meeting telling you the rules of the dorm. That was one of the best weeks of my life.
The education is not all that terrific to begin with, since it is so blatantly slanted as a left-wing marxist indoctrination center.
Tolerance is the virtue of believing in nothing. If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.
If you have left your children get out of the house without a sound and grounded knowledge what is ahead of them then shame on you.........
If your 17-18 year old does not know right from wrong by then you failed.....
During my orientation here at St Barack’s College of Pharmacy and Unicorn Management the dean gave a three-week-long PowerPoint presentation (well, it seemed that long, anyway) on how 1) Rich nations are bad, 2) Rich corporations are bad, and 3) the United States is really, really bad. I amused myself by counting the logical fallacies and dubious data.
That’s disgusting. I’m guessing no one challenged the pinko right?

I often fantasize about going through one of these orientations knowing what I know now. It would be a hoot. I would have to major in sensitivity training afterwards.
How tolerant of them (/sarc). But seriously, at first I thought the skit you were describing was satire because the irony was almost too much. But based on the rest of the skit, I don't know how any thinking person could fail to see the irony. But then again, liberalism is a mental disorder, so why should I expect anything less.
Recently I went to the Auraria campus of Denver University for my 8th grade daughter’s history fair presentation. While I was waiting I went into the student union building and I could not believe it. On every window and column were posters about this abuse or that intolerance. They had an office of gay/lesbian/transgender/bi you know the drill. There was a list on the window of sexual orientations. There were about 15 different ones and when I got to “asexual polyamourous” I started laughing. I turned around and this stereotypical liberal woman was staring at me with this horrified expression. You know, like I had horns growing out of my head, and I just lost it. I had tears streaming down my face and she stalked off in a huff.
If you just landed on Earth and went in to this place you would have to conclude that it is the dangerous place in the world. Everybody there is an oppressor, rapist, intolerant hater, girlfriend abuser or religious fanatic. Things sure have changed in the last 20 years.
Nope. The younger students had probably been fed the same pap for all their lives, and as for the cynical old farts like me...well, telling the dean he’s full of s*** in front of 200 would-be pharmacists and unicorn managers is not conducive to a long academic career.
Just to give you an idea of some of the BS he was spouting, he cited UN statistics that said that Red China had a lower poverty rate than the USA. Need I say more?
Thank you. I have a number of nieces and nephews going to and about to go to college. Their parents are for the most part conservative so they’re well grounded and this bs won’t bother them. I tell them and any young person I meet to always remember that the college didn’t invite you there(’’acceptance’’ my ass) you’re paying to be there, you’re paying their salaries. And just as you pay a plumber to fix the sink, not hear his political philosophy, unless you’re taking a political science course, a physics professor should be told to just ‘’shut up ‘’ and teach physics and I tell my nieces and nephews to always let their professors know this.

My freshman orientation consisted of a brief party game to meet the folks on my floor, a unanimous vote by the floor to have no rules restricting visits to the floor by women, a bunch of band concerts and instructions on how to register for classes.
I did, however, later have an experience analogous to your fantasy. Before they were fully developed and made mandatory, the academic left had warm ups for the kind of “exercise” described in the article: when I was a grad student Penn had voluntary “racism awareness workshops” similar sorts of events which seemed to have the chief purpose of giving rich liberal white girls a sense of virtue by letting them confess their covert “racism”. I, my best friend in those days (a solidly right-of-center physics grad student who ended up emigrating to Israel after finishing his Ph.D.), and a physics professor decided to make trouble by attending a “racism awareness workshop” and shining the light of reason on the pap they were peddling.
We got broken up into groups and all in all, I think was the most successful of the three of us, as our group’s “facilitators” ended up having to call in the organizer of the event, Jacqueline Wade, to moderate our group’s discussion. The “facilitators” were out of their depth because I was arguing a position they had, evidently never encountered before: that by and large racial prejudice had been extirpated from American society — yes it still existed in places and in some people, but it no longer held sway. Rather what seemed to be racial prejudice was now cultural prejudice, and that cultural prejudice is not invidious like racial prejudice because some cultures really are better than others. (I gave as an example the difference in reaction to a black man dressed in surplus fatigues — the ‘80’s analog of a hoodie and sagging pants — walking into a jewelry story speaking urban street patois — now called ‘ebonics’ — and to the same black man dressed in a suit and speaking perfect Queen’s English with a Jamaican accent.) By the end of the session, everyone was discussing culture, not race.
All in all it was a “hoot”: a good time “annoy[ing] the left and keeping it unhappy,” as Bill Buckley would have put it.
(I actually want to find out whether that event had anything to do with the transformation of American “anti-racism” into “multiculturalism”, which in the mid-’80’s was an odd Canadian notion unheard of south of Lake Erie. It seems Dr. Wade, is, someone of stature in the academic anti-racism circuit, so it is just conceivable that it did.)
