Mayor Bloomberg urges residents in evacuation zones to flee (We're all gonna die...)

As Hurricane Irene steamrolled up the East Coast Saturday morning, weakening slightly in intensity but still packing a dangerous punch, Mayor Bloomberg urged those living in low-lying areas to flee - before it is too late.

The ferocious storm was downgraded to a Category 1 after it slammed into North Carolina, but its landfall in New York is still expected to produce winds of 75 mph and a powerful storm surge that could flood much of the city's coast.

"It is going to be a very serious thing," Mayor Bloomberg said at a press conference on Coney Island, one of the neighborhoods where a mandatory evacuation order is in place. "You have to leave right now."

"Staying behind is dangerous," Bloomberg said. "Staying behind is dangerous - it is against the law."

Bloomberg is RETARDED! There is no public transit in NYC as of 12 noon and the storm isn’t supposed to hit for another 15 hours! And it won’t even be a hurricane when it hits.

Most people took it good-naturedly,

They still had a pioneer attitude/spirit.

but times were different.

Liberalism turning them into wusses - you need our/big gov't help, you little peons.

I dunno if it was pioneer spirit, this was Queens, after all. But just about every adult man was a World War II veteran and a hurricane was the kind of “disaster” that one could easily shrug off.

I know! And didn’t NYC just get hit w/10 inches of rain and no closing of transit/subway.

Can you imagine if he were mayor on 9/11!! Thank God, Rudy, was there for such a time like that!

That's my point - how could it be expressed but there be some turmoil. Like you say, times have changed and so has that neighborhood/those who reside their now.

every adult man was a World War II veteran and a hurricane was the kind of “disaster” that one could easily shrug off.

When men were men and the young had someone to learn from.

Heard on WINS radio today that it takes 8 hours to shut down the transit system. Most of the trains are underground and the tunnels and stations often flood knocking out electricity. Maybe Bloomberg is just trying to avoid people being stranded in locked subway cars with no light or food and limited oxygem or he could just be an idiot.
