Al-Qaida's second-in-command, Atiyah Abd al-Rahman, has been killed in Pakistan, delivering another big blow to a terrorist group that the U.S. believes to be on the verge of defeat, a senior Obama administration official said Saturday.
The Libyan national who was the network's former operational leader rose to al-Qaida's No. 2 spot after the U.S. killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden during a raid on his Pakistan compound in May.
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said last month that al-Qaida's defeat was within reach if the U.S. could mount a string of successful attacks on the group's weakened leadership.

#2 Job opening..
I think everybody else just moves up a notch. Unless they don’t hire from within.
Get al-Zawahri (sp?). He is the whole key to their philosophy. Kill him and it all collapses.
Payment for Libya?
#2 got zotted August 22, 2011 in Waziristan.
They look like they need killin.
May he enjoy his 72 Helen Thomases in the fiery furnace of satans bosom. hehehe

Pakistanis in denial 10 years after 9/11
AFP - Wed, 24 Aug, 2011
The young Pakistani officer sighs when he thinks about what happened to Osama bin Laden. “Was he really here?” he says. “All that, it’s like 9/11, we don’t even know
Sure would like to see Zawahiri with a Hellfire hole in his rump.
The Avis of Al Qaeda has a short shelf life, it seems.
This is just misdirection. Al Queda is just a small part of the Global Jihad.
We could get the rest of them by knocking out the ISI headquarters with a smart bomb.
Obama and the White House thugs will be attending the funeral and take a much needed vacation.
Rack em up!
US official: Al-Qaida’s No. 2 killed in Pakistan (Atiyah Abd al-Rahman).
So who is the number one AQ in Pakistan, and why don’t they go after him? They always mamage to get the #2. It reminds me of my days as a flight instructor, and the student had no trouble holding the plane at 2050 feet but couldn’t for his/her life hold the altitude at 2000 feet as instructed.
Were killing 'em in Pakistan and fighting along side 'em in Libya. Yeah, man!
Ayman al-Zawahiri was the number 2 until the death of Osama bin Laden. He is still alive. They have gotten a lot of the number 3 guys because they are operations leaders. By the nature of their work they have to communicate with the guys actually doing the killings which make them far more vulnerable.
"Who does Number 2 work for?"
Thanks for the post but there....(no comment)
They’ve got Obama’s resume in the short stack.
This is about patting ourselves on the back & self entertainment.
Roughly, for every 3 AQ operative killed, 6 more come onto the scene. The issue here is to subdue Islam as an *ideology* (religion), which has been intertwined with politics, since its inception by Mohammad . Discourage the conversion of non-moslems to Islam from across the board of races included.
There is absolutely no point in killing the Taliban or AQ members, and same time negotiating with them. Nor, in facilitating Islam to permeate by differentiating between its various shades & forms. Islam, as a whole, is on the rise. The West has & helps it to be. It should be about discouraging Islam as a whole.
I think the only tougher gig is being the world’s oldest human.
Our nations politicians STILL have not identified the enemy....and those who have are up against those who desire political gain over our nations security, and I fear greatly it is too late...they have bases all over our nations and politicians actually helping to establish these. I want to cry for what is to come!
And the draw almost all of the western world's wrath, leaving the rest to do pretty much as they please. They're small, but incredibly useful.
Yes. It’ll come back to seriously bite ‘em politicians & the rest. It won’t differentiate.
Will there be Pakis rioting like after Osama bin Laden?
I concurr. There is no victory in war until the enemie’s will to resist is broken. Everything this administration does politically meddling does no more than stir up the millions of Islamoroaches
... and unless they need further approvals form their human resources diversity chief
For the record & posterity perhaps, the quote below is a very interesting historical one, regarding the Arab-Islam invasion of (infidel Zoroatrian) Iran in the 7th century AD.
Note: the same approach by the Khomeinists (Arabic-Islamic) regime of Iran starting in 1979 to this day, and Islamics in general, applies to Iranian people, and *OTHER* races or nations (Western ones included) - generally, *INFIDELS*
“If you wish to tame them (Iranians or infidels), remember that they cannot be kept in rein except with method of caliph Omar [i.e. the 2nd caliph, one of Mohammad’s immediate disciples, whose armies began the conquest of the Sassanid Empire of Iran].
It continued: These people, you ought to humiliate.
You ought to hit their heads so hard that they cannot raise them. Reduce their income to a minimum, and give them as little sustenance as possible. They are best kept in check when hungry. Because, once they are well fed the first thing they think of is revolt.
On the war front, dispatch them to the front-line so that they become the first targets of the enemy. Make sure they are inflicted with whatever hardship and punishment possible. I repeat: humiliate & crush them, and see how they bow their heads to your.” — (source: Tarikh al Tawarikh [History of Histories], vol.2. Also quoted in Javad Fazel, Maasoum Chahrom [The Fourth Infallible One], p, 88.
The above was said some 13 centuries ago. But, think carefully how a similar strategy, may relate to a current or future situation in the West. As well as people in charge in the USA, herself, to humiliate the American People.
“how they bow their heads to your = your RULE”.
The workers comp premiums for an al Qaeda #2 must be astronomical.
compared to California, even after reform, not really. ;-)
the line of applicants stretches around the compound wall.
It seems like there are a lot of #2’s. We’re always killing #2. Are they #2 before we kill them, or do they get a sort of promotion-in-rank after death? Or, is it merely a job that has a very short maximum tenure? You’d think even ambitious Al Qaeda operatives might start turning down the promotion to #2 soon.
Wonder how many are left in the queue. They’re dropping pretty fast. At this rate, we should be able to leave Afghanistan annnnny day now.....
It would at least help with the deficit.
On second thought, maybe the premiums aren’t so bad. After all, those guys don’t tend to go through extended periods of disability or rehab....
Contact inhuman resources.
I guess they have no words in their language for “dead meat.”
The only way AQ leaders can be insured is through US federal housing programs. Nobody else is dumb enough to take the risk.
“Kill him and it all collapses. Except for the Ft. Hood shooter, the shoe bomber, the Times Square bomber and other lone wolf operations.
Zawhiri is #1. He is probably in the northern tribes area of Pakistan. He married somebody’s daughter, so is family and protected.
Maybe not since 200 Taliban from Afghanistan and possible the northern tribal area just attacked Paki troups and killed 15.
Everybody in Al-Qaida is #2.
This guy wasn’t even the most important “Rahman” on the rewards for justice webpage! He had a reward for $1 million while another “Rahman” has a reward for $5 million.
Also this guy was reported dead last October. Was his death ever retracted or does the US want to take credit for killing every terrorist leader twice?
