City braces for Irene's arrival (as a tropical storm, not hurricane...)
NY Postt ^ | 8/27/11 | CANDICE M. GIOVE, DAVID SEIFMAN and WILSON DIZARD

There’s no calm before the storm.

As frenzied New Yorkers emptied grocery stores, grabbed at every last flashlight and evacuated their homes, the MTA shut down its entire transit system in anticipation of Irene walloping the city.

The storm is on track to strike east of the five boroughs by 8 a.m.

Transit workers began the arduous system halt — the first weather-related one in history — at noon. Bus and subway service might not get moving until well into Monday afternoon.

The apocalyptic standstill leaves five million riders without a way around.

Testing...testing...testing. Perfect opportunity to see how the masses react to government control, wouldn’t you say?

Anyone else looking at weather maps like this one: http://www.intellicast.com/Storm/Hurricane/AtlanticSatellite.aspx?animate=true

It looks like the top of Irene ran into another system that’s shearing the edges and maybe disturbing the center.

the arrogance and flippancy of some freepers about this storm is disgraceful. sure, it’s “only” a 75-90mph storm... STRIKING NEAR-DIRECT BLOWS on up to four major population centers. oh right, liberals live there, so we don’t care... (rolls eyes)

Thank you.

Hope you’re right. I’m among the Bloomberg refuges, bounced from my Chelsea condo.

So the idiot Bloomberg shuts down NYC for 3 days for a tropical storm?

He's hoping that the hurricane is bad enough that the President will successfully push Congress into taking on more debt in the name of "Hurricane Relief". All of the Dems/Socialists want this to be another Katrina so they can hit up the Federal Gov't for more $$$.

The last thing you want to do is piss off a hurricane.

Obama was so hoping to add one more item to his list of reasons the economy sucks. The laugh is on him.

Bloomberg killed the NYC economy for 3 days by shutting down all the public transit. And the union transit workers will still get paid.

Tell me about it, I live in NYC and I can’t believe what the hell I am witnessing. I haven’t seen such BS hype since Kim Kardashians wedding. I have been in REAL hurricanes and tornadoes when I did land surveys in the ‘80s, the kind that will lift you exactly 90 degrees horizontal to the ground like a cartoon when you hold onto a tree, and this DICK is shutting down the entire city as if a nuclear holocaust is coming for a Cat 1? 30 -40 mph winds with rain? WTF? Well that is what is coming. I think we had 30 mph winds a few weeks ago which made the streets messy with leaves and newspapers and made puppys and kittens uncomfortable..You know what this is? Another primo example of how liberals and Rinos go on bizarre power trips. They pedagog to the masses, condescend to the little people so they can play Stalin and when reality hits they look like complete a-holes which the media pays no attention to longer than a day.

I could have stayed though the threat was that Bloomberg was going to cut the power in our area (Zone A). Plus, there’s no way to get around without the subways and all the restaurants and shops were closing in my neighborhood. So I felt I really didn’t have much choice.

I’m watching the nanny state propagandists on the local NYC TV channels right now and you can see that the weathermen are trying to hide their embarrassment since they know the storm is going to flop out.

It’s going to be funny to see their faces when Irene is downgraded to a tropical storm in the 11pm NOAA update. And Bloomberg’s actions are a disgrace. He needs to get public transit up and running for Monday morning so people can go to work.

People were fighting in front of Food Emporium this morning. Lines stretched out from the store and onto the sidewalk. I did see a lot of people on the street carrying home 12-packs of beer.

It’s not arrogance and flippancy, it’s a reaction to the completely overblown hysteria on display by the media.

Sure it’s one thing to be prepared but it’s another thing completely to call it “historic” and “devastating” and “apocalyptic”.

It’s the Nanny State on parade. Put out the warnings and shut up. It’s a very minor storm and had been since before it made landfall.

I’m not trying to diminish the danger of this storm...but I just saw a special “live report” from the beach somewhere along the coast on ABC. The reporter dude was on the balcony of a hotel in his rain gear “leaning in” to the wind and saying as how it was hard to keep his balance sometimes. In the background (the beach) two young ladies in shorts were skipping along in the shallow water kicking at the waves.

Gosh I wish I had recorded that. The media are gonna have their story no matter what.

We live on the Gulf Coast, we know hurricanes. This is hype and rather funny. The real story: it is going to rain in NYC.

It’s down to a cat I, that’s not enough to do a good job of flushing all the turds in NYC out to sea. Real shame, but if you believe the media this is the second coming.

We’re not being arrogant and/or flip but a lot of people on here have been though many hurricanes and tropical storms and we know the difference and know what to do and what not to do, particularly people in Florida and Texas. I think the biggest problem the north eastern part of the country has is that it is populated by people who live like sardines and have little basic intelligence about how to cope with any deviation to their normal day so they once believe the MSM and FEMA and are led around like sheep.
