MDTA Hurricane Update -- Saturday, Aug. 27 -- 7:45 p.m.

BAY BRIDGE CLOSED; Nice/Key/Hatem/Tydings bridges in Wind Warnings

The Bay Bridge (US 50/301) was closed at approximately 7:35 p.m. today as a result of severe winds and unsafe driving conditions due to Hurricane Irene. The bridge is experiencing sustained winds of more than 62 mph and wind gusts of 72-80 mph and will remain closed until conditions are deemed safe for vehicles to cross.

MDTA's four additional bridges including the Harry W. Nice Memorial Bridge (US 301), the Francis Scott Key Bridge (I-695), the Tydings Memorial Bridge (I-95) and the Thomas J. Hatem Memorial Bridge (US 40) are operating under wind warnings.

Citizens are encouraged not to travel unless absolutely necessary. For motorists traveling from the Eastern Shore toward Baltimore or other points west, an alternate route for the Bay Bridge is northbound US 113, US 13 or DE 1 through Delaware, to southbound I-95 in Maryland. Delaware traffic information will be posted on deldot.gov and announced on WTMC-AM (1380).

Motorists may access statewide travel information including traffic and weather conditions at MD511.org or calling 511. 24/7 Bay Bridge traffic conditions are available by calling the BAYSPAN Hotline at 1-877-229-7726.

The Maryland Emergency Management Agency stresses awareness and preparedness as Hurricane Irene approaches Maryland. Go to mema.state.md.us for the latest storm track and preparedness information.

I was there yesterday. It was, literally, the calm before the storm.

If you want to try a scary bridge, check out the Solomon’s Island bridge between St. Marys and Calvert Counties, Maryland. It seems like the first hill in a roller coaster!

Would that be the Thomas Johnson Bridge (Route 4)?

My one and only trip across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge was on a nice day with a mild breeze. When I got going, it took all that I could to focus straight ahead and not look over the side which was about 3’ away from the driver’s seat. That bridge was moving, too!!

Didn’t need the services of the pilot cars who go up and “rescue” drivers and drive them the rest of the way.

That looks to be one long, curved bridge. The Solomon’s bridge doesn’t look like a lot of fun either.

Try this one.

Rainbow Bridge in Texas, over the Neches River between Port Arthur and Orange.
