Scientists question Perry's unusual stem cell back treatment

He calls it innovative. Some scientists call it a big risk. In any case, the stem cell procedure that Gov. Rick Perry had last month was an unusual experiment to fix a common malady: a bad back.

Perry has access to the best possible care and advice. Yet he and his doctor chose a treatment beyond mainstream medicine: He had stem cells taken from fat in his own body, grown in a lab and then injected into his back and his bloodstream July 1 to fuse part of his spine.

The treatment carries potential risks ranging from blood clots to infection to cancer and might even run afoul of federal rules, doctors say. At least one patient died of a clot hours after an infusion of fat-derived stem cells outside the United States.

Hmmm, it's not embryonic stem cells is it?

That's the problem.

Someone with a bad back won't be very active. This alone raises the risk of blood clots.

Funny how they're only funny about stem cells when it didn't involve ripping apart an unborn child.

Wow! I guess had it been a fetal stem cell, all would be ok. Of the things that you could potentially criticize Perry for, why this? It’s HIS body, HIS stem cells.

They are upset because he didn’t use stem cells from aborted babies.

The treatment carries potential risks ranging from blood clots to infection to cancer and might even run afoul of federal rules, doctors say.

And that, in a nutshell, is why we need someone LIKE Rick Perry to win the Presidency. Here we have a doctor and a patient agreeing on a treatment. The treatment involves nobody else, poses no risk to anybody but the patient, is done with the patient's OWN cells. And yet it might "run afoul of federal rules", like the federal government has some right to tell a person what medical treatment they can get.

We need someone who makes the federal government irrelevant in our lives, and frees us up to do even stupid medical treatments if we know the risks.

They would have proclaimed him as some kind of secular saint and a brave man if that had been the case.

It said it’s his own stem cells.

Just saw Perry last night. He looked fine. He was walking naturally.

Actually, I was recently helped by self administered “anti-gravity boots” treatments at a local park’s PAR course inclined plane structure. And self-restricted lifting. And Time.

So whats the question? What is it that the priests of the new church of science want to know?

Why did you use your own stem cells? Mr. Perry is guilty of letting unborn baby stem cells sit idle. We can’t let that continue. He must be brought before the tribunal of the committee of public virtue.

If we were taking about John F. Kerry using embryonic stem cells, those same critics would herald this as a great breakthrough.

AFAIK, there have been zero successful treatments, based on embryonic stem cells. Umbilical cord and adult* (which this was) stem cells are showing lots of promise.

(*adult = from your own body)
