Mitt Romney is going into the lions den today.
Romney is neither a veteran nor a Texan, but he is heading to San Antonio, Texas to address the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention one day after Gov. Rick Perry, who is both a veteran and a Texan, fired up the crowd with a patriotic paean to American exceptionalism.
But with poll after poll showing Romney slipping into Perrys wake, the former Massachusetts governor is keen to show that hes not backing down. The latest CNN survey has Perry nearly doubling Romney among all candidates running or considering a run and with a share of voters larger than Romney and third-place Rep. Michele Bachmann combined when only declared candidates were offered.
While Romney has a low and slow strategy that relies on his presidential plausibility and big fundraising to outlast more exciting contenders, including Perry, that strategy would cease to be viable if the insiders and money men backing Romney came to believe his candidacy was doomed. To avoid being marginalized, Romney must demonstrate to the political press that he has a plan to knock down Perry.
(snip)
This is backed up in Romneys oft-repeated implicit argument that Perry has spent an awful lot of time in government for a guy who opposes big government, while Romney spent only four years in public office (Not for lack of trying, though. Romney lost previous bids for a Senate seat and the presidency.)
But the heart of the Romney strategy seems to be to stand back and allow Bachmann to tear apart Perry to rip his eyes out, as she did to Gov. Tim Pawlenty.

The desperation in the Romney camp is heart palpitating.
((Shrug))
>> Bachmann to tear apart Perry to rip his eyes out, as she did to Gov. Tim Pawlenty.
That’s so absurd, it’s funny.
Perry is not exactly a field mouse like Pawlenty. And, for her part, Bachmann may have claws, but she also has areas of exposed underbelly, and Perry has claws too.
My guess is, it’s not going to happen as advertised, but I could be wrong.
You are right...Bachmann came against a wimp. Perry, on the other hand, is no wimp...he can dish it back harder than Michelle ever thought of. Perry would rather not but if that is what it takes...Look out, Michelle.
1. Romney
2. Perry
3. No of the above
I’ll take door #3.
Only a real man would let a woman fight his battles for him, right Mittens?
No way this repubic vajayjay gets my vote.
This is the second story about Team Romney looking for Bachmann to go after Perry for them.....I understand that Perry and Bachmann are going after the same type of voters for the most part but this feeds into the notion awhile back by some that Bachmann could be a stalking Horse for Mitt in some way
just in case
I’m with you on door #3...no more RHINOS!
Perry will put her in her place.
So who will you vote for in the primary?
That’s what I was thinking.
>> Perry would rather not
Personally, I’m hoping it doesn’t come to that. Wherever two or more people gather there will be differences in opinion. But witnessing folks who are supposed to be on the same team attempt to eviscerate each other is never pretty, whether it’s a family, a church congregation, a business unit, a conservative internet forum, ...
which would be, where?
which would be, where?
Ya, where?
So, you don’t believe that Michele is in cahoots with Milt? I sure hope not, but I’m becoming more suspicious.
This election “No of the above” is not an option we can afford.
Romney has been running for President for THE LAST FIVE YEARS and the best he can get is also ran status now that Rick Perry is in the race. Mitt, you’re toast. If he thinks Bachmann as an attack poodle is his path to the nomination he’s as crazy as Ron Paul.
I agree it is sad how so called level headed conservatives behave...a friend who visits christian forums a lot tells me how awful supposed christians act toward each other. Of course, they do that here in the religious forum. All one can do is shake their head.
Perry will look over at her, and say.."Now see here, little lady..."
It only feeds into it if you totally ignore the most important factor...Michele Bachmann cannot be an unknowing, unwitting stalking horse. She is Romney’s opposite number and would not knowingly or wittingly be his stalking horse. That was true before Perry got in, that is true now.
Nobody can show the slightest evidence that this was ever anything but the fevered imagination of a few internet types who come on threads and spam, spam, spam against anyone other than Sarah Palin. Posting - as supposed evidence of this - a picture that has Michele Bachmann looking in the direction of Romney who is also in the picture, is laughable, childish and...well I won’t go on but I could.
Final point is, this idea that Romney hopes Michele Bachmann destroys Perry in a debate, therefore people turn to Romney when they weren’t for him before, is ludicrous because it isn’t going to happen. It’s a pipe dream.
>> All one can do is shake their head.
.. and, one can try to keep their *own* self “unspotted from the world”.
I’m try to do so here, with mixed results I confess, although I’d give myself a B this time around, which isn’t perfect, but better than last election cycle’s C or D grade. :-)
I really don’t care if you’re becoming suspicious.
Better yet, I can’t be manipulated with little fantasy stories about Bachmann working with Romney. If anything Perry and Romney are working together.
Yea. I find this frustrating. Could the Perry-bashers, Romney and the NYT get on the same page already??!!! It's got to be one or the other! It cannot be both.
The day Bachmann hired Ed Rollins was the day any chance she had of winning flew out of the window.
Not a chance of Perry saying something demeaning to Michele.
Women are very important in Texas politics. Have been for a very long time.
He long ago found the proper way to behave in that regard, and calling her “little lady” isn’t it...
Sorry, I’m not going to sit here and read the unfounded attacks against my governor....bias bs pulled from left sites...creating as much untruth as I’ve ever seen. I don’t turn the other cheek...unless, the person has proven to be flat out deranged...sitting by and ignoring it is far worse. I will not put a grade on my actions.
Hahaha. I’m not manipulated by fantasy stories either. I’m swayed by Diogenesis who is the “trojan” horse theory jedi master.
I view 2012 as being 1980 all over again. The country will be in as bad a shape as it was then. Gerald Ford, Howard Baker or George H.W. Bush would have also defeated Carter. Fortunately, Reagan was the GOP nominee. I've held my nose far too often
With the likelihood of Obama being defeated in 2012, I want a true conservative, not a charlatan.
Whatever I don’t care. Guess I’m a blasphemer to Rickstianity.
It was not a wise move.
I agree with your post.
I can only add that Bachmann is too reckless and arrogant to do the bidding for Mitt.
But Mitt doesn’t have to ask for her assistance anyway:
She’s an overly-aggressive opportunist with clydesdale-sized blinders and will help Mitt simply by pulling Perry under water with her in some kind of wild, loser-take-all, ex-girlfrind, political suicide pact once she realizes that she no longer has any shot at the Title.
You should neither take what I said personally, nor apologize for your own actions.
There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with holding and defending a position in the forum.
It’s all about HOW it’s done. I am talking about name calling, ad hominem attacks, angry outbursts, and so forth. THOSE are the things for which I “grade myself down” when I’m guilty of them.
From what I observe of your behavior here, you’re “doin’ it right”. I am trying to take a lesson from you and other reasonable posters to improve my OWN behavior.
FRegards
I’ll take door number 2 any day.
My commments were meant as a joke..sort of what the MSM would love to see Perry do....sory that I didn’t explain it better..
Political strategists are sleazeballs almost to a man. Perry’s chief strategist is no different. Dave Carney has a less than stellar past.
In fact, painting one candidate as working for another seems to be right up his alley. After all, this is a man who was involved in a fake Nader campaign and most recently was head of Newt’s team.
Willard better hope Bachmann takes Perry out. Willard can’t and won’t fight back in any way. If he can’t attack obama’s failed policies without issuing retractions five minutes later he certainly looks impudent against Perry.
Oh please, I am SORRY...I was stating my position. Not coming against you in the least. Yes, no name calling...it has been said when you start name calling, you’ve lost. OH there have been PLENTY of times, I’d love to do that...I take 10 deep breaths and back off until I can answer in an acceptable manner toward them and when I can’t...I just will not post back anything. Believe me, there are many more times when I have to do that than you can imagine.
We don’t agree on Michele Bachmann...in this sense.
I’m focused on what she brought to the Tea Party Movement. And how she brought that into the Halls of Congress and into the living rooms of Americans.
She staked out a very consistent, very conservative, pro-Tea Party position on Federal Government financial issues. She has had great influence, because she represents many grass roots activists, in pulling Republicans in the little people’s direction.
For that she gets my permanent thanks and admiration.
The things you castigate her for supposedly being or doing seem like personal judgements on her, and I don’t go there. That’s not where I’m focused. I don’t know her heart.
I do know she has accomplished great political good, and it has nothing to do with her running for President, it has to do with her grass roots activism and the positions she’s advocated in Congress.
We do agree she isn’t a stalking horse for Romney or anyone else.
Romney just needs to take a lesson from Rick Perry and stop being boring.
>> Not coming against you in the least.
I understand. But you should always feel free to, when I deserve it! :-)
Carry on, and FRegards
If Perry can actually take Iowa and then South Carolina while maintaining this kind of a gallop over the rest of the field, we will be looking at a “walk” to the nomination. Even if it narrows after then, in the bluer states, the cash and enthusiasm will have already broken out for Perry, because we all know the singular issue this election is about—reversing economic catastrophe orchestrated by Marxists.
Then their will be Perry, left standing, having drug that great and awesome exhibit of his around, TEXAS! Game over.
Rollins ultimately works for Bachmann. She can do and say whatever she wants. She can take his advise or ignore it.
I had early hopes for Bachmann and still see her as a powerful force for the conservative movement, but the suggestion that Rollins is the problem requires one to believe Bachmann is not in charge of her own campaign. I find the notion absurd...she is a force of nature. Rollins does not control her.
This is your cut-and-paste refrain on every Perry thread, so a word of unsolicited advice: learn the proper acronym for Republican In Name Only.
***Reagan always did it beautifully...he did it with jokes...he was a master at it.
I agree it is sad how so called level headed conservatives behave...a friend who visits christian forums a lot tells me how awful supposed christians act toward each other. Of course, they do that here in the religious forum. All one can do is shake their head.***
Christians used to believe that they owed God respect for showing them mercy and were humble and respected for it, now they think God owes them respect for being such smarties and use their Christianity as a status symbol and are laughed at because of it. If fact this carries over into politics. Americans are such status-seekers anymore they can’t address a fellow-American who stands on the opposite side of an issue without childish personal attacks and delusional self-promotion. Americans just need to grow up.
Very nicely stated. Thanks.
Milt is gonna get his ass handed to him too.
Some people do seem to have a bug bite they have to scratch. Mr. Jim has said time and again no more Rhinos...and as others....no cut and paste to it.
I am opposed to Perry and have many times posted why I oppose him. Those who favor him are not doing the country any favors. I do not want to see our country go the way of Texas....which the media and Perry followers are pushing.
I’ve seen you stir up fights on many threads...and others have told you as much more times than not. Just as you’re doing here. So one does learn quickly to consider the source.
