Jokkmokk (Lapland) celebrates world sausage record

A record breaking sausage was the star of the show at the start of the annual autumn fair in Jokkmokk, northern Sweden, on Friday.

The sausage, measuring over one hundred metres broke the previous world record, of 80 metres, also made for the same festival back in 1992. Jokkmokk has put itself on the map for its feat, during the annual fair which is now taking place for the 32nd time.

Making the giant sausage was no mean feat according to those involved in its preparation. Apparently it took four people some 150 hours to put it together.

Magnus Kvickström managing director of Jokkmokk’s Korv told reporters, "The only problem we had was that we had to make a special order for the sausage skin.”

The sausage proved to be the star attraction at a show which has guaranteed itself publicity over the years and brought increasing tourism to the town which lies in the northernmost part of the country, some 170 kilometres north west of Luleå.

The town is perhaps best known for being a central hub for Sweden’s Sami population. Each year, in celebration of its culture another annual market, which is held every February, is a longstanding tradition that goes back over 400 years.

Europe is densely inhabited. That we all know.

But, in fact, certain corners of the continent, even very vast ones, still appear like untouched virgin land.

Lapland, a historical region of Northernmost Europe, home of rein deers and Father Christmas, could well compete in areas other than sausages.

Start exploring her from here:

“That casing must have come from one hell of a sheep...”

- Or perhaps from that legendary pig, Sæhrímnir™, my Viking forebears feasted on;

“Fifteen is my limit on schnitzengruben!”

- In Swedish Laponia (as well as the rest of the country), the limit of schnitzengrubing a young female is 15.

America nurtures a tradition of performing this act before the girl in question has reached the age of proper womanhood.

For instance, Jerry Lee Lewis schnitzengrubed a 13 year old girl.

In Britain and other parts of the World (predominately the European countries, but admittedly some states in America as well), he was condemned by the media, religious groups and the public.

“No bologna!”

- Ok, but seriously;

The city of Bologna and the rest of the Italian region of Emilia Romagna slaughters millions of pigs annually and has been doing so for ages.

In Swedish Lapland, there's a tradition of exporting reindeer meat that, probably, is just about as old.

Lapland might even be a more suitable place for meat production than Continental Europe at large.
