Carney grants NBC permission to reschedule debate

President Obama plans to lay out his long-awaited jobs speech before a joint session of Congress next Wednesday evening -- which happens to be the same night of a Republican presidential debate.

"I respectfully request the opportunity to address a joint session of Congress on Sept. 7, 2011 at 8 p.m.," Obama wrote in a letter sent Wednesday to House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney says the timing of the speech is not aimed at overshadowing the next Republican debate, which is cosponsored by NBC News and Politico, and is scheduled to air at the same time as the planned presidential address.

"It is coincidental," Carney said. "It is one debate of many [that will air] on one channel of many... [and] there are many other factors here" to consider when scheduling a major address from the president, he added.

Carney gave NBC his permission to reschedule the Republican debate so it doesn't conflict with the president's speech, saying "if the network so chose and the candidates so chose" to reschedule, "that would be completely fine with us."

Boehner and Reid have not yet responded to Obama's letter, according to Carney.

If Boehner says yes, any republican lawmaker that shows up to this speech is an idiot. We all know from Obama’s past addresses exactly what he is going to do. He will lay out his skittles and unicorns agenda, then proceed to insult, demean and bully Republicans for opposing him. Who needs that?

I think Boehner should respond, sorry, this is not a good time for us, we already have other plans, how about Sept 5?

The 2012 campaign has started and 0bama wants to do a televised speech that is pure campaign BS and rhetoric. Nothing will be proposed that hasn’t already been suggested before and if it was urgent, he would have done it this week rather than next week. Networks need to offer equal time to the GOP under campaign laws.

I respectfully request the opportunity to address a joint session of Congress

The MOFO should demand it. He is President of the United States and he is practically begging.........SICKENING. Tell the Congress to get their a$$es in their chairs and give the speech. We are in such a bad state right now. Bush wasn’t very forceful either. Hopefully Sarah will be strong as I know she is and demand and not request. The President is the senior guy!!! If my Commanding Officer respectfully requested the crew to come to the hangar for a speech, I would barf. Obama needs to learn that he is the senior guy in government and until he does we are doomed.

got through but after speaking to them , they just said “ Okay, I will pass the message on!” Should have asked what their stance was.......but then maybe he doesn’t know which way the breeze is blowing yet.

Nobody watches nbc anyway, but if they do, they’ll probably catch half an hour of the debate before Obama shows up fashionably late.

If the debate is delayed for 1 day AFTER the propaganda speech, the candidates can address/comment on Comrade Maobama’s “new” economic plans.

Sounds like a win to me....

Have you noticed that since Beck left Fox News, Bambi doesn’t have anymore 5 PM pressers?

That was the intent. :)

Boehner should propose Sept 5 and stand firm.

DOES NBC have to have permission to do program scheduling...since when do TV networks have to ask or have White House permission??
must be something I've missed in my 68 years on earth..

John Bohner should remember that he too can be replaced in 2012...hurry up 2012

why even let NBC do the GOP debate, the left refused to let FOX do their debates plus NBC is looking to smack the candidates around while trying to help their boss obama.

You can bet the homo issues will come up and ignore the more important

EXACTLY

WHY THE HELL ARE WE LETTING NBC RUN THE DEBATE?

It will be the usual useless crap of the homo agenda, they
‘ll try and rip apart the candidates and of course Carney gives them permission as NBC works for the rat party.

Frigging hell I’m so sick and tired of a gutless GOP and always letting the crap we call the media dictate who we should have as our nominee.

I bet the fools at NBC are drooling at the prospect of getting these republicans

Do you not understand a chain of command? I know you didn’t have military service but anybody on this site should understand it. Sometimes I wish you would have had at least one day of service. It would have given you a better understanding of how government works. It is a pity but I just take your nonsense as ignorance. Do you receive government assistance for that?
