Hayworth seeking to withhold disaster money unless it is offset by budget cuts
Times Herald-record Middletown, NY ^ | 8/31/11 | Adam Bosch

The Republicans' demand for additional budget cuts comes as the Federal Emergency Management Agency is set to run out of assistance money that is used to repair roads and bridges, provide temporary housing and give other kinds of help to communities hit by natural disasters. The agency has $800 million left in that fund.

That sum will not be enough to cover damage inflicted by Hurricane Irene. In New York alone, Gov. Andrew Cuomo expects an economic loss of more than $1 billion. Damage to the entire East Coast is expected to total more than $7 billion.

Hayworth's stance was met with sharp criticism from those inside and outside her party.

U.S. Rep. Maurice Hinchey, D-Hurley, said he favors an emergency spending bill to shore up FEMA's coffers.

"We cannot afford to play political games with this emergency," Hinchey said.

Local officials worried a prolonged argument about how to fund FEMA could stall money to help them pay for crumbled roads and broken bridges.

New Windsor Supervisor George Green, a conservative Republican, warned he'll need federal help to repair a road that was completely wiped out in the Butterhill subdivision. Hayworth toured damage in New Windsor earlier this week, and Green said his congresswoman better not let the town's devastation become the rope in a political tug of war.

We have to control spending," she said. "There's no question about it."

Parts of the lower Husdson Vly were hit hard. I could hear the local libs now, she's insensitive. mean spirited, partisan, I would be surprised if they DON'T drop the R bomb on her. Her position seems harsh, But Rep Hayworth seems to realize you just can't get nothing for nothing, an uncharacterisitc trait for too many in the House and Senate.

Texas is on fire again. But Resident decides not to declare a disaster.

K. The yanks can do without just like us.

Turn about is fair play.

Guess who survives better without assistance from the fed?

War isn't about who is right. War is about who survives. Check your place in that TO&E.

I’m as fiscally conservative as anyone, but to say we can do without is utter B.S. A mandate to protect is what this country is about.

11 towns in VT are entirely cut off from the outside world, the village center in my town was wiped out, we are low on food and fuel. No clean water or sewage in the village.

The national guard is here trying to rebuild 1 lane out of our small town so our EMS services can access a hospital, our police station was destroyed and fire house flooded.

This community has worked non stop since sunday with mostly volunteers to provide services, make roads passible for EMS crews and provide safety. Many contractors are using their resources ( equipment, material ) to get the job done.

To say to us “let them eat cake” is absurd when the Mississippi river valley floods yearly and is allowed to rebuild in the flood plane with the blessing from Washington, and subsidized by federal flood insurance.

The next time Galvaston or the Texas gulf coast is wiped out I hope you’ll be down there with your excavator or dump truck volunteering to clean up and be out there pounding your fist to make sure no federal money is spent

Money is fungible. Take it out of some other wasteful program.
