Meet the members of what might be called Generation Limbo: highly educated 20-somethings, whose careers are stuck in neutral, coping with dead-end jobs and listless prospects.
And so they wait: for the economy to turn, for good jobs to materialize, for their lucky break. Some do so bitterly, frustrated that their well-mapped careers have gone astray. Others do so anxiously, wondering how they are going to pay their rent, their school loans, their living expenses — sometimes resorting to once-unthinkable government handouts.
“We did everything we were supposed to,” said Stephanie Morales, 23, who graduated from Dartmouth College in 2009 with hopes of working in the arts. Instead she ended up waiting tables at a Chart House restaurant in Weehawken, N.J., earning $2.17 an hour plus tips, to pay off her student loans. “What was the point of working so hard for 22 years if there was nothing out there?” said Ms. Morales, who is now a paralegal and plans on attending law school.
Some of Ms. Morales’s classmates have found themselves on welfare. “You don’t expect someone who just spent four years in Ivy League schools to be on food stamps,” said Ms. Morales, who estimates that a half-dozen of her friends are on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. A few are even helping younger graduates figure out how to apply. “We are passing on these traditions on how to work in the adult world as working poor,” Ms. Morales said.
But then there are people like Ms. Kelly and Ms. Klein, who are more laissez-faire. With the job market still bleak, their motto might as well be: “No career? No prospects? No worries!” (Well, at least for the time being.)

So she can run up another $100K or so in debt to add to her already huge student loans.
Here in Michigan we just cut some 30,000 college students off food stamps. When Granholm was governor all college students good food stamps regardless of need. Trust fund babies and full scholarship students were getting food stamps despite the fact that they didn’t need them.
Seemed like a terrible way to start their adult lives.

Translation: You don't expect someone with an Ivy League education to work a job beneath their eduction. I purposefully did not use the word "skills" because they don't have any.

These lazy lowlifes make me sick. Starting at the bottom and struggling your way up is one thing, I can understand a hand up once in a while. However, these pukes started at the top. Feh!

This was so unexpected.
Most of these expensive degrees are worthless. The sooner this bubble deflates, the better.

PFFFFT! Define this "high education." High as in stoned? Maybe. Today's colleges are churning out robots spewing garbage. I encourage everyone to search Google for theses and dissertations and read some of the executive summaries. They're leftist drivel with no substance, in most cases.
These kids have a hugely inflated sense of entitlement. Just wait until they find that perfect job in Government! When they get their chance, they will use what they believe are their oversized and highly trained brains to fix things good and hard for you little people!
Being a professional student is not a bad life. The trick is getting someone to pay for it. Mom, Dad, your fellow citizens....
If they are such great students, they should go to the real source of meaningful jobs. Visit your local military service recruiter. Can you say Lieutenant instead of Ms.?

My niece has a full scholarship with a stipend for food and she was also eligible for the food stamps under Granholm’s plan.
Let's see...she's 23 and has been working “so hard for 22 years...”??? Nothing like starting young but if her math is no better than that we may have a clue to some of her problems.
As for the rest, if they went to school so as to get a good paying job, why would anyone go into “the arts”? Or some field where no has hired for ever?
If their goal was self satisfaction and personal development paying out tons of money for an education was a waste of money.
I don’t know who advises these people but they’ve been sold a bill of goods. A guy graduates with a business degree expecting to become a consultant? And another expected to find a job in advertising.
One among them should take the opportunity of modern telecommunications to form a website of advice on realistic job prospects.
You must have a job.
Where I am, the young guys just don’t get a break. They are literally scraping pennies off places, cutting tree limbs on jobs from Craig’s list.
