Major Study Links Suicide and Other Mental Health Problems to Abortion (Big increased suicide risk)

An important meta-analysis published today in the prestigious British Journal of Psychiatry demonstrates that nearly 10% of mental health problems in women are directly attributable to abortion.  "Abortion and mental health: quantitative synthesis and analysis of research published 1995-2009," by Priscilla Coleman of Bowling Green University, shows that women with an abortion history have an 81% increased risk of mental health problems and 155% increased risk of suicide.  This meta-analysis combines 22 studies of 877,181 women, 163, 831 of whom have had abortions.  A meta-analysis is an especially powerful type of study because it includes a large number of subjects, and by combining studies is much more reliable than a single study.

This review, which is larger than any study to date, contradicts the recent and biased and less systematic review by the American Psychological Association, which fails to find a relationship between mental health problems and abortion.  The new meta-analysis also contradicts the stance of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), which has been silent on the mental health impact of abortion in its official publications despite overwhelming evidence over the last two decades of abortion's adverse effects.

This new review in a prestigious psychiatry journal sheds important light on the mental health of women. For example, South Korea not only has had a major increase in suicide but also holds the world record for the highest rate of female suicide.  This country is also called "the abortion paradise" because at least 43.7% of pregnancies end in abortion.

Every person I know who had an abortion is haunted by it

But I thought an increase in suicides was due to global warming . . .

“Every person I know who had an abortion is haunted by it”

And we’ll never hear a word about that in the MSM.

Yep. And when you really think about it, only a complete psychopath would be uplifted by the experience. So the emotional outcome is either neutral or negative.

With that said, I am always wary of interpreting this kind of data in a way to determine causation (vs. correlation).

Not to be crude, but sometimes the "crazier" girls happen to be the ones jumping into the sack right away. If those with mental problems are more inclined to having sex outside of a stable relationship, they would likely have more abortions, I would think. And the very fact of the mental illness would lend itself to a higher suicide rate.

My experience is much different.

As part of my initial intake evaluation on new female psychiatric patients, I always inquire about the number of pregnancies, and how many went to term, or were ended early with either miscarriage or abortion. If there is a history of abortion, I always, likewise, inquire if the abortion(s) has left any emotional scars or impact.

I have been surprised how very few answer that an abortion has left any emotional scars or moral concerns at all. The attitude is usually a nonchalant, unemotionally dismissive one. I have only evaluated a few where that issue has any bearing at all on their current reason for seeing me.

Correlation does not imply causation. I would suggest that the emotional trauma of an abortion does not lead to eventual suicide so much as do the broader issues related to the types of women who have abortions, and the types of life styles and lives they end up living. I am not convinced that a history of abortion causes an increase in suicide, but I think it likely that the sort of woman who would have an abortion, and especially not even care much about it, would be the sort of woman who will likely end up with a life so devoid of meaning as to lead to suicide.

A disordered mind is its own punishment.

The editorial was interesting, if brief:

Having an abortion is often a highly stressful event and the consequent implications for the person’s mental health have been hotly disputed. A comprehensive review of the literature suggests that there is a significant increase in mental health problems after abortion. Coleman (pp. 180–186) suggests that these risks need to be reflected in the delivery of abortion services, and raises the thorny issue that 90% of UK abortions are justified on the presumption that abortion actually reduces the risk to mental health associated with continuing the pregnancy.

So, an increase after abortion. They didn't even devote a whole paragraph to this, in the journal's editorial. It was in a grab-bag paragraph. On to dental health and so on...

If every woman that had an abortion was a successful suicide, they would still ignore the data.

Thanks for posting in News/Activism. A "Click to Add Topic" and typing editorial, and one more click will let it hang in that sidebar. More eyes will catch it in the editorial sidebar.

P.S. The "Print Article" link often links the printer friendly version of the article. Link it for folks who live beyond any broadband service. For some of them, all they can get is dialup service from a landline, and downloads can take almost forever.

>>>Every person I know who had an abortion is haunted by it<<<

Which would include myself. Even over the span of nearly four decades, there is still pain and remorse.

To redpol, and to every other woman out there who is wrestling with these demons- there is forgiveness with our Lord. You need only to ask Him. Get right with the Lord, learn from your poor decision, and move on to share your story with others who need to know the truth. That little baby is alive with the Lord, and you can use this terrible experience to His glory. He is that good of a God!

Sorry to hear- but you must CERTAINLY know by now you learned from the experience

Plus, they never mentioned any of this in the brochure- you were LIED TO- people cannot make good decisions when they are lied to.

ummmm you do intake on MENTAL PATIENTS? And the fact that they are there at all (after having had an abortion) does not tell you something?

I know people who are mental too (I was married to a ‘borderline’- trust me I know psycho) She was also pretty nonchalant about the 12 abortions she finally admitted to

” And the fact that they are there at all (after having had an abortion) does not tell you something?”

I find certain skills very admirable in people. Among those skills are the ability to read carefully what another has written, as well as the ability to then apply sound logic in analyzing what one has read.

Very admirable skills. You ought to look into them.

Wow... You are work in some sort of medical psychology intake facility?

I strongly suspect not the doctor (at least I hope not)

Do you mock people who disagree with you all the time?

Great people skill

You mentioned disagreeing with my observation that people I met who have have abortions are haunted by the experience- and you offerred as proof that they say “no” upon intake into a pyshoclogical facility. And you dont see any connection with them being there [a pyshoclogical facility] in the first place?

Yes- ONE of us should be looking into... something
