MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry says he opposes a fence along the U.S. border with Mexico.

Speaking to hundreds of New Hampshire voters at a private reception Saturday afternoon, the Texas governor says a fence would be ineffective and take too long to build.

The comments, which produced one angry shout, expose a rift with some conservative voters over Perry's immigration record. Tea party activists in Texas have been particularly upset by his steady opposition to the fence. He also signed a law giving illegal immigrants in-state tuition for Texas universities.

Why would anyone say that? If you are not a immigration absolutist like me and you think it is a waste of money, well the US government wastes lots of money on things a majority of the public does not want.

In this case a sizable number and maybe even a majority of the public want this fence. That Perry says no on this cause me to wonder about his judgement particularly since he is a former Dim office holder.

Hell, no need to hire them. They’re already coming across the border as they please.

Perry underscores border fence opposition

"Perry said that he does support putting "boots on the ground" and using "aviation assets" (i.e. aerial drones) to secure the border.'

I guess a fence is the only option anyone here can think of.

Some of us saw the fence around East Germany. It kept foreigners out.

He's the governor. Has he used his authority to call up the National Guard and put them on the border?

Ok, can we set up a tent city in your back yard for illegals? I am sure your local Catholic Church will help you set it up.

You have no clue what it would take to build a fence a long the TX-Mexico border!

It's 1200 to 1500 miles long...and all kinds of terrain. Have you ever been to Big Bend?

It would be a stupid waste of $$$...and wouldn't work!

Somebody tell me where Herman Cain stands on the issue of the fence/wall, I prefer wall.

I wish Cain were better known, as is, he has very little chance, maybe even that he’s a “fringe” candidate.

Perhaps a post in the new administration that has to do with “home land security”, I certainly like his views on muslims.

How do they “Own property on the other side?”

I was under the impression that Mexico doesn’t allow foreign citizens to own property?

a crushing tea party victory in the senate will fix the fix and the fixers regardless of who becomes president. Voting isn’t a simple act of civil duty anymore, it’s a complex act of civil war. Keep that in mind as you contemplate the 2012 election.

BINGO!

You and Perry can see the obvious. :)

No, I don’t support a fence on the border,” he said. “The fact is, it’s 1,200 miles from Brownsville to El Paso. Two things: How long you think it would take to build that? And then if you build a 30-foot wall from El Paso to Brownsville, the 35-foot ladder business gets real good.”

Let the man explain his thinking on this.

I think he's been explaining it for years.

WE can speculate all day/week/year long about this. Perry’s views on the border concern me. Just as I find myself starting to like him, this keeps coming back up.

I get the “it would be ineffective and too expensive” - but without some viable and “better” alternative, then what do we have?

Maybe if his option is to much more heavily arm the border patrol, increase its numbers and training, and to supplement with our armed forces - then he has a legitimate view. But what are his alternatives?
